  • It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressional elastic modulus and fracture stress of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressional test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 250 MPa. Compressional tests were performed applying various strain rates of 0.05 %/sec, 0.25 %/sec, 0.45 %/sec, and 0.75 %/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate.

  • Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to these mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique, a special experimental apparatus, can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate loading condition. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of the aluminum alloys, Al2024-T4, Al6061-T6 and Al7075-T6, under high strain rate compressive and tensile loading are determined using SHPB technique.

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia (Y-CSZ) single crystals show plastic deformation at high temperatures by activating dislocations. The effect of strain rate on the plastic behavior of this crystal was studied. As increasing strain rate from $\varepsilon=1.04\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ to $2.08\times10^{-5} sec^{-1}$ the yield drop was suppressed and resulted in higher Young's modulus and yield stress. Dislocation structures of the strained crystals were analyzed using a transmission electron microscope to elucidate the plastic behavior of these crystals. In the early stage of plastic deformation, dislocation dipoles and prismatic dislocation loops were formed in both samples. However, dislocation density was increased by increasing strain rate. Strong sessile dislocations were observed in the sample with higher strain rate, which may cause the higher work hardening.

  • A specific experimental method, the Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique has been widely used to determine the dynamic material properties under the impact compressive loading conditions with strain rate of the order of 10$^3$/s∼l0$^4$/s. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of rubber materials widely used for the isolation of vibration from structure under varying dynamic loading are determined by using plastic SHPB technique. A transition point to scope with the dynamic deformation behavior of rubber-like material is defined in this paper and used to characterize the specifics of the dynamic deformation of rubber materials.

  • The creep rate is affected by the temperature and in fact. if the temperature above $T_M/2(T_M:melting\;point)$. The aim of the present investigation is to study the relationship of static creep and cyclic creep behavior of pure copper and the formulation of these phenomena with the special attention to the instantaneous strain. strain rate from time and number of cycles have the same inclination Steady state creep rate depend upon maximum stress and can be expressed as linear function according to Power law creep equations Creep rupture time has relation with creep rate. and it make a group represented as the same direct line regardless of max stress, stress ratio and the temperature. Initial strain effect on continuous creep deformation. and have guantitative relationship between elastic and Plastic strain. LMP have similar tendency than OSDP and MHP according to temperature

  • Inelastic deformation behavior of metals and alloys is considered rate dependent. Uniaxial ratcheting experiments performed by Ruggles and Krempl, and Hassan and Kyriakides exhibited that higher mean stress for a fixed stress amplitude resulted in higher ratchet strain within a rate independent framework and higher stress rate resulted in lower ratchet strain, respectively. These phenomena are qualitatively investigated by numerical experiments through unified viscoplasticity theory. The theory does not separate rate-independent plasticity and rate-dependent creep, and thus uses only one inelastic strain to describe inelastic deformation processes with the concept of the yield surface. The growth law for the kinematic stress, which is a tensor valued state variable of the constitutive equations, is modified to predict the linear evolution of long-term ratchet strain.

  • The analysis model is the infinite power law creep material containing the rigid inclusion with crack shape. The present analysis is performed using the complex pseudo-stress function method. The strain rate intensity factor is developed as new fracture mechanics parameter which represents the stress and strain rate distribution near a crack tip in power law creep material. The strain rate intensity factor is developed in terms of Kolosoff stress functions.

  • The dynamic behavior of sheet metals must be examined to ensure the impact characteristics of auto-body by a finite element method. An appropriate experimental method has to be developed to acquire the material properties at the intermediate strain rate which is under 500/s in the crash analysis of auto-body. In this paper, tensile tests of various different steel sheets for an auto-body were performed to obtain the dynamic material properties with respect to the strain rate which is ranged from 0.003/sec to 200/sec. A high speed material testing machine was made for tension tests at the intermediate strain rate and the dimensions of specimens that can provide the reasonable results were determined by the finite element analysis. Stress-strain curves were obtained for each steel sheet from the dynamic tensile test and used to deduce the relationship of the yield stress and the elongation to the strain rate. These results are significant not only in the crashworthiness evaluation under car crash but also in the high speed metal forming.

  • Different pass strains and rolling temperatures were applied to understand the effects of pass strain and rolling temperature on flow stress and flow strain of AA5083 alloy. The specimens were prepared by conventional casting process followed by hot rolling. Hot torsion tests were conducted at temperature ranges of 350 to 52$0^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. During the process, hot-restoration mechanisms, dynamic recovery(DRV) or dynamic recrystallization (DRX), of the AA5083 alloy were analyzed from the flow curves and deformed microstructures. It was found that while the rolling strain per pass and rolling temperature have little effect on the folw stress, they have significant effect on the failure strain. The DRV was responsible for the hot restoration mechanism of the hot-rolled specimen. heavily elongated grains and small subgrains containing dislocations were obtaned during the hot deformation. This was due to the presence of Al6Mn precipitate in the alloy.

  • This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.
