  • This paper is an experimental study of the normal strength concrete beam and high strength concrete beam for the analysis of bending and shear behavior. In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling increase construction cost, the good ceiling system such as beam with opening give to economical merits because of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. For the analysis on the mechanical behavior of the reinforced high strength and normal strength concrete beams with circular opening in the web, the stress concentration of the circular opening, crack pattern and reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with different reinforcing methods and difference concrete strength were tested and their resisting forces and load deflection curves were defined in this study.

  • The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is now under construction in Korea. For the stability analysis for the caverns of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For the analysis, in-situ rock stress were measured by overcoring method. The stress measurement showed that initial horizontal to vertical stress ratio was 1.07-1.32 in low powerhouse sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from rock core properties through engineering processes. So the ratio of input elasticity fur the analysis were about 0.16-0.55 to rock core elasticity. In most of the analysis, elasto-plastic condition with Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria were applied. But in one case, viscoelastic condition was applied, too. The input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 to rock core strength parameters, respectively.

  • Since stainless steel sheets have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and corrosion resistance, they are commonly used as one of the structural materials of the railroad cars or the commercial vehicles which are manufactured by the spat welding. Among the many kinds of spot welded lap joints, it can be found that multi-lap joints are employed in their body structure. But, fatigue strength of these joints is lower than that of base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget edge of spot weld and is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as the mechanical and geometrical factors. Thus, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and systematic design criterion for the long life design of the spot-welded body structures. In this paper, the stress distribution and deformation around the spot-welded multi-lap joints subjected to tensile shear load was numerically analyzed. Also, the $\Delta$P-Nf curve was obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, $\Delta$P-Nf curves were rearranged in to the ${\Delta}{\sigma}$-Nf relation with the maximum stress at nugget edge of spot weld.

  • This study presents the stress safety analysis of a cylinder, which is manufactured by a tempered ASTM D2, tempered SM45C and normalized SM45C materials, respectively. The inner diameter of three cylinder models are 85mm, 95mm, and 11 Omm and the total length of a cylinder is 2,365mm for a high pressure injection molding machine. The FEM computed results show that the inner diameter of 85mm with a thick thickness of 62.5mm may produce the injection pressure of 325MPa and the inner diameter of 110mm with 50mm thickness reduces up to the injection pressure of 220MPa because of a reduced thickness of a cylinder. These injection pressures are enough for a high pressure injection molding machine assembled by ASTM D2 cylinder. And also, an injection cylinder manufactured by a tempered SM45C material in which is low priee may produce 225MPa injection molding pressure and this may sufficiently endure stress safety compared to that of ASTM D2 cylinder material. Thus, this study recommends that tempered SM45C cylinder is appropriated for a mild injection molding machine as an alternative cylinder material when the safety strength and low prices are considered. But the normalized SM45C cylinder material does not meet a stress safety of yield strength in general.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transversal residual stress at the thick weldment of large container ship. In order to do it, the variables used for this study were restraint degree, yield strength of base material, thickness of weldment and welding heat input. Here, the level of restraint degree at the thick weldment of container ship having the various welding sequence was calculated using FEA. From the result, the h-type specimen was designed to simulate the level of restraint degree at the actual weldment of containership. With H-type test specimen designed, the effect of the variables on the distribution of transversal residual stress at the weldment in a container ship was evaluated using the comprehensive FEA. Based on the results, the predictive equations of mean value and the distribution of transverse residual stress in each location of residual stress were established using dimensional analysis and multiple-regression method. The validation of predictive equations was verified by comparing with measured results by XRD in the actual weldment of the ship.

  • In this paper, the design stress intensity values for the plate-type fuel assembly for research reactor are presented. Through a tensile test, the material properties of the cladding (aluminum alloy 6061) and structural material (aluminum alloy 6061-T6), in this case the yield and ultimate tensile strengths, Young's modulus and the elongation, are measured with the temperatures. The empirical equations of the material properties with respect to the temperature are presented. The cladding undergoes several heat treatments and hardening processes during the fabrication process. Cladding strengths are reduced compared to those of the raw material during annealing. Up to a temperature of 150 ℃, the strengths of the cladding do not significantly decrease due to the dislocations generated from the cold work. However, over 150 ℃, the mechanical strengths begin to decrease, mainly due to recrystallization, dislocation recovery and precipitate growth. Taking into account the uncertainty of the 95% probability and 95% confidence level, the design stress intensities of the cladding and structural materials are established. The presented design stress intensity values become the basis of the stress design criteria for a safety analysis of plate-type fuels.

  • In re-assessing the Jacket-type fixed steel structures, the current standards often allow the simplicity of corrosion sections using local buckling or equivalent section approach to applying empirical formulae of frame stress and resistance analyses. However, those approaches can lead to significant errors for non-uniform corroded frames in a specific area, including force distribution, stress, and allowable strength of the tubular section, compared to the actual cases. This paper investigates a suitable approach to determine the actual stress on non-uniform corroded tubular frames under compression through the non-linear ABAQUS model by considering the effect of large deformation on the frame axis and the frame section. There are 3 scenarios of interest. In the 1st and 2nd scenarios with simple corrosion cases, the stress ratios using the numerical model and theoretical formulae correspond to the calculation of allowable strength reduction ratios in standards. However, scenario 3, which describes non-uniform corroded sections based on survey data, provides considerable differences in results. Therefore, it proves the reliable and effective results when using this method to analyze the resistance of the actual corroded section in the Jacket platforms.

  • In this paper, the displacement and stress strength safeties have been presented for cylindrical hollow rollers of a wire saw machine. Using the finite element method, the hollow roller with Y-shaped shift and vertical columns between three tubes has been developed to analyze the displacement behavior and stress strength safeties. For the same diameter and length of hollow roller models with a different weight, the displacement behavior safety of Y-shaped shift column and vertical column models is heavily depending on the total length of a hollow roller, which is closely related to the bending moment of a hollow roller structure. But, the stress strength of a hollow roller is more influenced by the cross sectional area of a hollow roller for the similar weight. Thus, this paper recommends Y-shaped hollow roller for increasing the roller strength safety and decreasing a total roller weight.

  • In this study, the stress and deformation characteristics of corner protection in which is fabricated in an insulation area have been analyzed using a finite element method. The proposed corner protection may increase the strength and leakage safeties of conventional LNG storage system. The stress and deformation of LNG storage tank system are computed for an insulation panel box, membrane inner tank, and prestressed concrete outer tank. The FEM computed results indicate that the stress and displacement of new membrane LNG tank system with a corner protection between an inner tank and an outer tank are reduced in comparison to those of a conventional membrane LNG tank. This is explained that the strength safety of LNG membrane tank system may be increased due to a strength stiffness of a corner protection.
