  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of appearance stress and appearance management behavior on job-seeking stress among male university students. Methods: The participants of this cross-sectional and descriptive study were 158 male students attending a university in K Province who completed a self-report structured questionnaire. The survey period was from September 19th to November 9th, 2017. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses with the SPSS statistics 23 program. Results: Job-seeking stress showed significant differences according to BMI (F=2.55, p=.042) and pocket money (F=3.08, p=.049). The results of the regression analysis showed that grade (${\beta}=8.93$, p=.008), pocket money (${\beta}=-5.11$, p=.029), appearance stress (${\beta}=.52$, p<.001), and appearance management behavior (${\beta}=.25$, p=.001) were significant factors affecting jog search stress. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that variables such as grade, pocket money, appearance stress, and appearance management behavior significantly explain job-seeking stress among male students in college. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to reduce job-seeking stress for senior male students who are preparing for employment before graduation. In addition, when organizing a program to reduce job-seeking for male university students, it is necessary to help them have a more positive evaluation of their appearance and pursue proper appearance management behaviors.

  • Purpose: The purpose was to examine the effectiveness of a psychosocial stress management program on stress and coping in student nurses. Method: A nonequivalent control group pre-posttest design was used. A convenience sample of 24 students from the Department of Nursing, Wonju College of Medicine, Yonsei University were assigned to experimental (n=12) and control groups(n=12). Stress was measured using the Visual Analog Scale (10 points) and blood cortisol. Coping was measured using a scale modified by So (1995) based on the Ways of Coping Checklist developed by Folkman and Lazarus (1985). Depression was measured using the CES-D by Radloff (1977) and state anxiety, using the State Anxiety Inventory by Spielberger (1976). The psychosocial stress management program included education, relaxation (Korean Dan Jeon-typed Breathing and music), and social support. Result: Results showed for the two groups, 1) a significant difference in stress scores (U= 19.50, p=0.002), 2) no difference in cortisol levels (8am, 4pm), 3) a significant difference in problem-focused coping (U=25.50, =0.007), 4) no difference in emotion-focused coping, and 5) no difference in state anxiety and depression. Conclusion: By utilizing the program, students were able to learn how to control their stress and improve their coping. Therefore with a partial modification, psychosocial stress management can be useful for continual management of stress in student nurses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a cognitive behavioral stress management program on perceived stress, coping strategies, and cortisol in people with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2. Method: Patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited from of a public health center in an urban area. Thirty-five participants (experimental group=17, and control group=18) enrolled. The experimental group received small group-based cognitive behavioral stress management training for eighty minutes per session, once a week for eight weeks. Data were collected at baseline and ninth week for perceived stress, affect-oriented coping, problem-oriented coping, and cortisol. The data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0. Results: The experimental group had significantly less perceived stress (t=-9.82, P<.001) and cortisol (t=-2.14, p=.040) than the control group. No significant group differences were found in affect-oriented coping (t=-.43, p=.673) or problem-oriented coping (t=1.40, P<.170). Conclusion: These results suggest that a cognitive behavioral stress management program can have positive effects on perceived stress and cortisol in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. Further research with a larger sample and for a longer period is needed to expand our understanding of the effects of the program for patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.

They were divided into an experimental group of 29 patients who received asthma management education and a control group of 32 patients. The asthma management education pro-gram was composed of group education (once) and reinforcement education (three times) with environmental therapy and immunotherapy to house dust mite. Results. Stress significantly decreased in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. Compliance with health care regimens significantly increased in the experimental group compared to that in the control group. Conclusions. • Objectives: Emotional support and a stress management program should be simultaneously provided to clients as effective preventive services for healthy behavioral change. This study was conducted to review various relaxation and meditation intervention methods and their applicability for a preventive service program. Methods and results: The author of this paper tried to find various relaxation and meditation programs through a literature review and program searching and to introduce them. The 'Relaxation Response' and 'Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)' are the most the widely used meditative programs in mainstream medical systems. Abdominal breathing, Progressive Musclular Relaxation (PMR), Relaxative Imagery, Autogenic Training (AT) and Biofeedback are other well-known techniques for relaxation and stress management. I have developed and implemented some programs using these methods. Relaxation and meditation classes for cancer patients and a meditation based stress coping workshop are examples of this program. Conclusions: Relaxation and meditation seem to be good and effective methods for primary, secondary and tertiary preventive service programs. Program development and standardization and further study are needed for more and wider use of the mindbody approach in the preventive service area of medicine.
