  • Dynamic rheological properties of honeys with invert sugar at different mixing ratios of honey and invert sugar (10/0, 812, and 6/4 ratios) were evaluated at various low temperatures (-15, -10, -5, and $0^{\circ}C$) using a controlled stress rheometer for small-deformation oscillatory measurements. Honey-invert sugar mixtures displayed a liquid-like behavior, with loss modulus (G") predominating over storage modulus (G') (G">>G'), showing the high dependence on frequency (${\omega}$). The magnitudes of G' and G" increased with a decrease in temperature while their predominant increases were noticed at -10 and $-15^{\circ}C$. The greater tan ${\delta}$ values were found at higher temperature and ratio of honey to invert sugar, indicating that the honey samples at subzero temperatures become more viscous with increased ratio of honey to invert sugar and temperature. The time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle was used to bring G" values at various temperatures together into a single master curve. The TTS principle was suitable for the honey samples in the liquid-like state. The progress of viscous property (G") was also described well by the Arrhenius equation with high determination coefficients ($R^2=0.99$). Dynamic rheological properties of honey samples seem to be greatly influenced by the addition of invert sugar.

  • The Edwards-Vilgis slip-link theory and the Kaliske-Heinrich extended tube theory were tested experimentally using published experimental data on networks of natural and isoprene rubber and on polysiloxane networks. All parameters were adjusted to achieve an optimum fit. The data description obtained with the EV theory is not satisfactory and the parameter values tend to lie outside their reasonably expected range. But for the region of low strains, the Kaliske-Heinrich theory offers a satisfactorily accurate data description which is able to serve for practical purposes. Its crosslink term, however, is based on approximations which lead to a questionable prediction and values determined for the exponent in the entanglement term lie outside the range expected by the KH model. Thus, the title question cannot be given a positive answer. Conclusions published earlier that the trapped entanglements contribute both to the crosslink and constraint (entanglement) term are supported by the present data analysis. Experimental equibiaxial data on hydrocarbon networks do not show any maximum on their stretch ratio dependence, contrary to the predictions of molecular theories. The stretch ratio dependences of relative reduced stresses do not sensitively reflect differences in the chemical nature of the chain backbone (hydrocarbon vs. siloxane) and in the crosslinking method (end-linking vs. random crosslinking).

  • The Food-Service industry, especially the family restaurant so called 'people industry' have a high dependence on human resources. In spite of this importance of human resources, most family restaurant are facing lots of problems such as short of capital, weak financial support, not efficient interpersonal communication and so on. Under this circumstance like that in family restaurant, in which there is a higher importance of human resources to other industries as they are all front-line employers in response to customer demands, the studies on possible factors that affect the employees to be satisfied are highly required. This study was conducted to find out what possible factors affect the employees to be more satisfied, how they affect the employees and what relationship exists between the employee's job satisfaction. This study was intended to develop the most efficient people management in family restaurant. The study was followed up with factor analysis and correspondent analysis as well as regression analysis in order to find out the difference among the individual characteristic variables and to verify the hypotheses.

  • Three wind-tunnel simulations of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow in suburban country exposure were generated for length scale factors 1:400, 1:250 and 1:220 to investigate scale effects in wind-tunnel simulations of the suburban ABL, to address recommended wind characteristics for suburban exposures reported in international standards, and to test redesigned experimental hardware. Investigated parameters are mean velocity, turbulence intensity, turbulent Reynolds shear stress, integral length scale of turbulence and power spectral density of velocity fluctuations. Experimental results indicate it is possible to reproduce suburban natural winds in the wind tunnel at different length scales without significant influence of the simulation length scale on airflow characteristics. However, in the wind tunnel it was not possible to reproduce two characteristic phenomena observed in full-scale: dependence of integral length scales on reference wind velocity and a linear increase in integral length scales with height. Furthermore, in international standards there is a considerable scatter of recommended values for suburban wind characteristics. In particular, recommended integral length scales in ESDU 85020 (1985) are significantly larger than in other international standards. Truncated vortex generators applied in this study proved to be successful in part-depth suburban ABL wind-tunnel simulation that yield a novel methodology in studies on wind effects on structures and air pollution dispersion.

  • The present numerical study investigates the effect of a secondary flow on the heat transfer in order to delineate the mechanism of laminar heat transfer enhancement of a viscoelastic fluid in rectangular ducts. The second normal stress generating a secondary flow is modeled by adopting the Reiner-Rivlin constitutive equation and the calculated secondary flow showed good agreement with experiments. The primary velocity U as well as the pressure drop were not affected by the secondary flow in rectangular ducts, whose order of magnitude is less than 0.1% of the primary velocity. The small magnitude of the secondary flow, however, affect moderately the temperature fields. The calculated Nusselt numbers with secondary flow show 50% heat transfer enhancement over those of a purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid, which are considerably lower than the experimental values. Therefore, we conclude that there should be an additional heat transfer enhancement mechanism involved in the viscoelastic fluid such as temperature-dependence.

  • The complete moment-curvature curves of doubly reinforced concrete beams made of normal- or high-strength concrete have been evaluated using a newly developed analytical method that takes into account the stress-path dependence of the constitutive properties of the materials. From the moment-curvature curves and the strain distribution results obtained, the post-peak behavior and flexural ductility of doubly reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beam sections are studied. It is found that the major factors affecting the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete beam sections are the tension steel ratio, compression steel ratio and concrete grade. Generally, the flexural ductility decreases as the amount of tension reinforcement increases, but increases as the amount of compression reinforcement increases. However, the effect of the concrete grade on flexural ductility is fairly complicated, as will be explained in the paper. Quantitative analysis of such effects has been carried out and a formula for direct evaluation of the flexural ductility of doubly reinforced concrete sections developed. The formula should be useful for the ductility design of doubly reinforced normal- and high-strength concrete beams.

  • The molecular components that generate and maintain circadian rhythms of physiology and behavior in mammals are present both in the brain (suprachiasmatic nucleus; SCN) and in peripheral tissues. Examination of mice with targeted disruptions of either mPer1 or mPer2 has shown that these two genes have key roles in the SCN circadian clock. Here we show that loss of the clock gene mPer2 affects forced locomotor performance in mice without altering muscle contractility. A proteomic analysis revealed that the anterior tibialis muscles of the mPer2 knockout mice had higher levels of glycolytic enzymes such as triose phosphate isomerase and enolase than those of either the wild type or mPer1 knockout mice. In addition, the level of expression of HSP90 in the mPer2 mutant mice was also significantly higher than in wildtype mice. These results suggest that the reduced locomotor endurance of the mPer2 knockout mice reflects a greater dependence on anaerobic metabolism under stress conditions, and that the two canonical clock genes, mPer1 and mPer2, play distinct roles in the physiology of skeletal muscle.

  • Half-beads of multi-layer-steel cylinder head gaskets take charge of sealing of lubrication oil and coolant between the cylinder head and the block. Since the head lifts off periodically due to the combustion gas pressure, both the dynamic sealing performance and the fatigue durability are essential for the gasket. A finite element model of the halfbead has been developed and verified with experimental data. The half-bead forming process was included in the model to consider the residual stress effects. The model is employed to assess the dependence of the sealing performance and the fatigue durability on the design parameters of half-bead such as the width and height of bead and the flat region length. The assessment results show that the sealing performance can be enhanced without significant deterioration of the fatigue durability in a certain range of the half-bead width. In the other cases the improvement of sealing performance is accompanied by the loss of the fatigue durability. Among three parameters, the bead width has the strongest influence.
