  • Recently, owing to the development of industry and the improvement of building techniques, concrete structures are becoming larger and higher. In hardening of these large connote structures, the heat of hydration gives rise to considerable thermal stress depending on the size and environmental condition of concrete, which might cause thermal cracking. Especially, the crack may cause severe damage to the safety and the durability of concrete structure. This study investigates the thermal properties of concrete according to several binder conditions, such as OPC, Belite rich cement(BRC), slag cement(SC), blast furnace slag(B) added cement fly ash(F) added cement and blast-furnace-slag and fly ash added cement. As a result of this study, the properly of concrete is most better BRC than others, and fly ash(25%) added cement and BFS(35%)-fly ash(15%) added cement gets superior effect in the control of heat hydration. But synthetically considered properties of concrete, workablity, strength heat hydration, etc, it is more effective to use mineral admixture. Especially, to be used Blast Furnace slag is more effective.

  • Strut-and-tie models for noncontact lap splices are presented and parameters affecting the effective lap length $(l_p)$ and the splice strength are discussed in this paper. The effective lap length along which bond stress is developed is shorter than the whole lap length. The effective lap length depends on the transverse reinforcement ratio $({\Phi})$ and the ratio of spacing to lap length $({\alpha})$. As the splice-bar spacing becomes wider, the effective lap length decreases and, therefore, the splice strength decreases. The influence of the ratio ${\alpha}$ on the effective lap length becomes more effective when the transverse reinforcement ratio is low. Because the slope of the strut developed between splice-bars becomes steeper as the ratio ${\Phi}$ becomes lower, the splice-bar spacing significantly affects the effective lap length. The proposed strut-and-tie models for noncontact lap splices are capable of considering material and geometric properties and, hence, providing the optimal design for detailing of reinforcements. The proposed strut-and-tie model can explain the experimental results including cracking patterns and the influence of transverse reinforcements on the splice strength reported in the literature. From the comparison with the test results of 25 specimens, the model can predict the splice strengths with 11.1% of coefficient of variation.

  • This study examined the defect characteristics of fuel flow proportioner-mounted structures to analyze the causes of structural defects during aircraft operation. System vibrations and single component vibrations that occur during aircraft operations are usually the cause of structural defects. The fuel flow proportioner causes a defect in the support structure due to the vibration caused by the pressure change caused by the sudden increase in the flow rate. Defects in the support structure of the fuel flow proportioner are not correlated directly with the cracking of the maneuver, and flight time according to aircraft operation analysis is related to the use of A/B. The structural reinforcement configuration was confirmed through static and life analysis of the cracks of the bracket mounted under the fuel flow proportioner for improvement of the defect. An analysis of the reinforcement revealed a minimum structural strength of +0.15. Structural life analysis confirmed that the stress acted on the site under 15Ksi. The fatigue life was confirmed to be more than 7,700 Cycles.

  • Grain boundary characteristics and corrosion behavior of Alloy 600 material were investigated using the concept of grain boundary control by thermomechanical treatment(TMT). The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) was analyzed by electron backscattered diffraction pattern. The effects of GBeD variation on intergranular at tack(JGA) and primary water stress corrosion cracking(PWSeC) were also evaluated. Changes in the fraction of coinci dence site lattice(CSL) boundaries in each cycle of TMT process were not distinguishable, but the total eSL boundary frequencies for TMT specimens increased about 10% compared with those of the commercial Alloy 600 material. It was found from IGA tests that the resistance to IGA was improved by TMT process. However, it was found from PWSCC test that repeating of TMT cycles resulted in the gradual decrease of the time to failure and the maximum load due to change in grain boundary characteristics, while the average crack propagation rate of primary crack increased mainly due to suppression of secondary crack propagation. It is considered that these corrosion characteristics in TMT specimens is attributed to 'fine tuning of grain boundary' mechanism.

  • Recently, the use of duplex stainless steel which with a two-phase microstructure (equal mixture of ferrite and austenite) has been increased in a variety of industrial fields due to higher strength leading to weight saving, greater corrosion resistance(particularly, stress corrosion cracking) and lower price. However, currently, stainless steels are not included in the structural materials of Korean Building Code and corresponding design standards are not specified. In this paper, experimental studies have been performed to investigate the structural behaviors of duplex stainless steel (STS329FLD) bolted connection with two bolts for providing the design data. Main variables are shear connection type (single shear and double shear) and end distance parallel to the direction of applied force. Fracture modes at the final step of test were classified into typical block shear fracture, tensile fracture and curling. Curling occurrence in single shear connection led to ultimate strength drop by up to 20%. Test strengths were compared with those by current design specifications such as AISC/AISI/KBC, EC3 and AIJ and proposed equations by existing studies. For specimens with no curling, Clement & Teh's equation considering the active shear plane provided a higher strength estimation accurancy and for specimens with curling, Kim & Lim's equation considering strength reduction by curling was also overly unconservative to predict the ultimate strength of curled connections.

  • Various types of FRP materials have been applied for structural strengthening of RC beams in various forms. When CFRP plates are used, a premature failure used to occur before enough strengthening effect appears. This is primarily due to the rip-off of CFRP Plate attached on RC beams. Despite of numerous studies on the rip-off failure of externally strengthened RC beams, its failure mechanism is not definitely clarified yet. Investigations from literatures have shown that the rip-off failure is dependant on the vertical and shear stresses at the level of main reinforcements in RC beams. This study suggests an analytical model to Investigate the rip-off failure load based on the stress states at the level of main reinforcements. The proposed model is relatively simple and produces very comparable results to the test data. It is believed that the proposed model can be successfully used to provide more information on the rip-off failure mechanisms and its prevention.

  • The dental implant materials required good mechanical properties, such as fatigue strength, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing fatigue resistance and delaying onset of stress corrosion cracking, shot peening has been used for > 50 years to extend service life of metal components. However, there is no information on the electrochemical behavior of shot peened and hydroxyapatite(HA) coated Ti-6Al-4V alloys. To increase fatigue strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened Ti-6Al-4V alloys by electron beam physical vapor deposition(EB-PVD) have been researched by various electrochemical method in 0.9%NaCl. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. The produced materials were quenched at 1000$^{\circ}C$ under high purity dried Ar atmosphere and were hold at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs to achieve the fatigue strength(1140㎫) of materials. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. Shot peening(SP) and sand blasting treatment was carried out for 1, 5, and 10min. On the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloys using the steel balls of 0.5mm and alumina sand of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ size. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coatings were carried out by using electron-beam deposition method(EB-PVD) as shown Fig. 1. Bulk Ti, powder TiN and hydroxyapatite were used as the source of the deposition materials. Electrons were accelerated by high voltage of 4.2kV with 80 - 120mA on the deposition materials at 350$^{\circ}C$ in 2.0 X 10-6 torr vacuum. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coated surfaces and layers were investigated by SEM and XRD. A saturated calomel electrode as a reference electrode, and high density carbon electrode as a counter electrode, were set according to ASTM GS-87. The potentials were controlled at a scan rate of 100 mV/min. by a potentiostat (EG&G Co.273A) connected to a computer system. Electrochemical tests were used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened materials in 0.9% NaCl solution at 36.5$^{\circ}C$. After each electrochemical measurement, the corrosion surface of each sample was investigated by SEM.

  • This study is to evaluate the characteristics of SCC at the welded region of high strength steel using acoustic emission(AE) method. Specimens were loaded by a slow strain rate method in synthetic seawater and the damage process was monitored simultaneously by AE method. Corrosive environment was controlled using the potentiostat, in which -0.8V and -1.1V were applied to the specimens. In the case of one-pass weldment subjected to -0.8V, much more AE counts were detected compared with the PWHT specimen. It was verified through the cumulative counts that coalescence of micro cracks and cracks for the one pass weldment with -0.8V were mostly detected. In case of the one pass weldment subjected to -1.1V, time to failure became shorter and AE counts were produced considerably as compared with that of the two pass weldment. It was shown that AE counts and range of AE amplitude have close relations with the number and size as well as width of the cracks which were formed during the SCC.

  • The heat exchanger tube in nuclear power plants is mainly fabricated from nonferromagnetic material such as a copper, titanium, and inconel alloy, but the moisture separator & reheater tube in the turbine system is fabricated from ferromagnetic material such as a carbon steel or ferrite stainless steel which has a good mechanical properties in harsh environments of high pressure and temperature. Especially, the moisture separator & reheater tubes, which use steam as a heat transfer media, typically employ a tubing with integral fins to furnish higher heat transfer rates. The ferromagnetic tube typically shows superior properties in high pressure and temperature environments than a nonferromagnetic material, but can make a trouble during the normal operation of power plants because the ferrous tube has service-induced damage forms including a steam cutting, erosion, mechanical wear, stress corrosion cracking, etc. Therefore, nondestructive examination is periodically performed to evaluate the tube integrity. Now, the remote field testing(RFT) technique is one of the solution for examination of ferromagnetic tube because the conventional eddy current technique typically can not be applied to ferromagnetic tube such as a ferrite stainless steel due to the high electrical permeability of ferrous tube. In this study, we have designed RFT probes, calibration standards, artificial flaw specimen, and probe pusher-puller necessary for field application, and have successfully carry out RFT examination of the moisture separator & reheater tube of nuclear power plants.

  • In order to strengthen RC structures, various strengthening methods have been used. Particularly, external tendon strengthening method is very popular method to strengthen damaged structures in terms of efficiency, ease, economics. In this study, improved anchorage elements using the lifting hole were proposed to strengthen PSC or RC girder without any damage. Two types of anchorage elements were proposed and these elements were applied on six RC beams. Also, three types of existing anchorage elements were applied on three RC beams. Otherwise, any anchorage element was not applied on one RC beam to used as a control beam. To analyse behavior of these elements, static load tests were carried out. Test variables were anchorage shapes, prestressing level on the steel bar and tendon profiles. Deflections, strains and modes of failure were recorded to examine the strengthening effects of the beams. Ductility index and tendon stress were analyzed by comparing cracking load, yielding load and ultimate load. As a result, proposed anchorage elements using lifting hole were superior to existing anchorage elements in terms of strengthening effect and furthermore, they showed ductile behavior based on energy method.
