  • Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of voice disorders on changes in stress among people with damaged larynxes. To accomplish this, physiological changes and reductions in the stress of Sprague-Dawley rats whose larynx had been damaged were investigated after the laboratory animals were administered kudzu leaf extracts with sedative effects. Methods: In the experiment, a total of 24 rats were divided into four groups of six rats, including the normal group, control group, experimental group 1, and experimental group 2. After orally administering to the subjects a predetermined amount of the extract at a specific time (once per day over five weeks), changes in physiological functions, internal organ weight, cortisol, estrogen, and progesterone in the subjects were examined, and an immunological test was conducted on their brain tissues. Results: Statistical significance was seen in the experimental group as opposed to the control group and the results were similar to those of the normal group. Conclusions: In consideration of these results, it is deemed that there are severe effects on stress due to voice disorders and that the administration of kudzu leaf extracts results in improvement in stress.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of first clinical training on stress, anxiety and changes in autonomic nervous system in nursing students. Methods: Seventy-four nursing students were assigned to the experimental group (n=36) that had two weeks of clinical training, and the control group (n=38) that had only two weeks of regular classes. Perceived stress, state anxiety and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured at the beginning and end of the experiment. Results: Perceived stress in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group. However, State anxiety was not significantly different between the two groups. All indices of HRV except LF/HF ratio were significantly different between the two groups. LF norm in the experimental group was significantly higher than in the control group, and HF norm in the experimental group was significantly lower than in the control group. Conclusion: Based on these results, it can be suggested that clinical training increases the perceived stress and affects the changes in autonomic nervous system in nursing students.

  • The objective of this investigation is to find effects of the pulsatile flow on the morphological changes of the endothelial cell(E.C.) in blood vessel. The shear flow experiment system is used to get the morphological changes of the E.C. The shapes of E.C. are simulated by the cosine curves and computer simulation is used to calculate the pressure and shear stress fields on the E.C. The inlet boundary condition is given from the measured velocity data of femoral artery. The endothelial cells reduce their heights in the flow field so as to reduce the pressure and wall shear stress on the surface. As the exposed time increases, the shear stress and pressure on the E.C. are reduced under the pulsatile flow. The shear stresses on the cell surface show the minimum values during the deceleration phase.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the hemodynamics on the morphological changes of the human endothelial cells due to the blood flow by in vitro experiment and computer simulation. The morphological changes of the endothelial cells due to the t10w shear stress were observed in the laminar t10w chamber as a function of the exposure time. The observed shapes of the endothelial cells are used to the model shapes of the endothelial cells for numerical study and the pressure and the wall shear stress variations around the endothelial cells are calculated from the numerical results. The endothelial cells elongate along the t10w direction and lessen their heights in the flow field to reduce the pressure and the wall shear stress on the surface.

  • Objectives: This paper aims to investigate the influence on stress hormones of job stress resulting from firefighting duties, as well as the degree of such influence. Methods: KOSS-26 and stress hormones such as norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (EPI), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol were analyzed for 191 male firefighters from the western area of Incheon, the Incheon Industrial Complex, and Bucheon, Korea. Job stress and stress hormones were compared between a office working group and field-working group. Results: There was no significant difference in EPI and ACTH between the two groups. Change of stress hormones prior to engaging in typical duties, following typical duties, and immediately after field activities was examined. All the EPI, ACTH, and cortisol showed statistically significant changes with time, but not NE in the blood. In the field-working group, the cortisol levels in the blood of the firefighting and rescue groups showed notable differences depending on the time at which the measurements were taken. Conclusion: The differences in stress hormone levels depending on the type of duties of the firefighters were identified. Thus, interventions proper to job requirements is required in order to ease stress.

  • To understand antioxidant enzyme response of two contrasting Arundinella hirta ecotypes to drought stress, drought-tolerant Youngduk and drought-sensitive Jinju-1, were comparatively analyzed changes in the enzymatic activities of peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione reductase (GR). Two ecotypes, drought-tolerant Youngduk and drought-sensitive Jinju-1 were subjected to drought stress by withholding water for 12 days. ROS accumulation level and electrolytic leakage were significantly increased in both A. hirta ecotypes by drought stress treatment but less in Youngduk than Jinju-1. The RWC significantly decreased in both the drought stress-treated ecotypes as compared to control, but less in Youngduk than Jinju-1. Soluble sugar and protein content were increased more in drought stress-treated Youngduk as compared to Jinju-1. The activities of antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, CAT, POD, APX, and GR increased significantly in both the drought stress-treated ecotypes Youngduk and Jinju-1 as compared to control. The increase in antioxidant enzyme activity level was more prominent in drought stress-treated Youngduk as compared to Jinju-1. Taken together, these results suggest that Youngduk was more tolerant to drought stress than Jinju-1, and seem to indicate that tolerance of A. hirta to drought stress is associated with increased activity of antioxidant enzymes.

  • We have studied the characteristic changes of optical device using imprint lithography. An imprinted structure is inherently involved in residual stress due to the temperature and the pressure cycle during fabrication process. A structure with residual stress undergoes stress relaxation, which leads io dimensional change. Therefore, annealing processes was performed to reduce the residual stress of imprinted polymer channel. Reduction of residual stress was confirmed through dimensional change, birefringence, and the mechanical properties. We have fabricated an optical device, and it saw the optical intensity changes within 0.1% for 1 month.

  • The stress in Permalloy thin films fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering on the Si (100) substrates has been investigated with various deposition parameters such as the film thickness, argon pressure, and rf power. The internal stress changes from compressive to tensile with higher input power and argon pressure. The cause of stress variations with these deposition parameters is discussed in terms of thermal and/or intrinsic stress changes. Low coercive force is obtained from Permalloy thin films at a condition of low compressive stress.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to look for pathological mechanism of disease development caused by Taedok, by studying whether stress and diet in pregnant ICR mice affect the intestinal flora and IgA (Immunoglobulin A) concentration. Methods The mice were divided into 4 groups (n=5 per group) based on the concept of Taedok: the control group (G1), stress group (G2), capsaicin diet group (G3), high fat diet group (G4). We collected and analyzed intestinal flora from maternal feces and cecal flora from neonatal mice by group. Then, IgA concentration in the maternal feces and sIgA (secretory Immunoglobulin A) concentration in the cecal contents of newborn mice were analyzed. In addition, serum corticosterone was analyzed before and after stress application. Results Changes in maternal intestinal flora and neonatal mice cecal flora by stress and diet were observed. There were no significant changes in the IgA concentration in maternal feces and the sIgA concentration in the cecal contents of neonatal mice. No significant changes compared to the control group were observed between groups before and after applying stress. However, when comparing within one subject, a significant increase was confirmed after stress application in the stress group (G2). Conclusions Based on the results, we observed stress and diet in pregnant mice affect the intestinal flora of maternal and neonatal. We were able to interpret the pathological mechanism of Taedok based on the principle of interaction between mother and newborn intestinal flora.
