  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, low temperature and high temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, low temperature and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C$, -3$0^{\circ}C$, -5$0^{\circ}C$, -7$0^{\circ}C$, -10$0^{\circ}C$ and 5$0^{\circ}C$, 10$0^{\circ}C$ , 15$0^{\circ}C$, 18$0^{\circ}C$ and in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range $\DeltaK_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I ) and stress intensity factor range ΔK in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • Fiber reinforced metal laminates(FRMLs) were new type of hybrid materials. FRMLs consist of high strength metals(Al 5052-H34) and laminated fiber with structural adhesive bond. The effect of resin mixture ratios on the fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties of aramid fiber reinforced aluminum composites was investigated. The epoxy, diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA), was cured with methylene dianiline(MDA) with or without an accelerator(K-54). Eight kinds of resin mixture ratio were used for the experiment ; five kinds of FRMLs(1)(mixture of epoxy and curing agent) and three kinds of FRMLs(2)mixture of epoxy, curing agent and accelerator). The characteristic of fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties FRMLs(2) shows more effecting than that of FRMLs(1).

  • The effects of heat treatment on fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) of Inconel 690 have been investigated in terms of carbide morphology and grain size. Cycling tests in air at room temperature have shown that FCGR in low stress intensity factor range (ΔK) region can be effectively reduced by increasing the grain boundary carbide precipitate size and grain size. Decrease in FCGR is attributed to the crack tip blunting at the precipitates of grain boundary chromium carbides.

  • Turbine blade in nuclear plant is subject to cyclic bending fatigue by high steam pressure. Especially, fatigue fracture is caused by low stress below yielding stress. Photograph by SEM doesn't have striation but photograph by AFM has striation on the fatigue fractured surface of 12% Cr steel used in turbine blade. Surface roughness $R_q$ has the linear relation with respect to stress intensity factor range ΔK and is increased linearly according to load amplitude $\textit{\Delta}P$. In this study loading condition applied to turbine blade is predicted by the relation between the gradient of $R_q$ to $\textit{\Delta}K$ and load amplitude $\textit{\Delta}P$.

  • Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to study cross sectional profiles and dimensions of fatigue striations in 2017-T351 aluminum alloy. Their widths(SW) and heights (SH, SH(sub)h, SH(sub)ι) were measured from the cross sectional profiles of three-dimension AFM images. The following results that will be helpful to understand the fatigue crack growth mechanism were obtained. (1) The relation of SH=$\alpha$(SW)(sup)1.2 was obtained. (2) The ratio of the striation height to its width SH/SW, SH(sub)h/SW and SH(sub)ι/SW did not depend on the stress intensity factor range ΔK and the stress ratio R( =P(sub)min/P(sub)max = K(sub)min/K(sub)max). (3) Effect of precipitate on the morphology of striation was changed by the relative dimensional difference between the striation width SW and the precipitates. From these results, the applicability of the AFM to nano-fractography is discussed.

  • Sheet aluminum alloys used in manufacturing of machine structures for transportation show the difference of crack growth speed depending on thickness under the constant fatigue stress condition. The referred thickness effect is a major fatigue failure property of sheet aluminum alloys. In this work, we identified the thickness effect in fatigue test of thick plate and thin plate of Al 2024-T3 alloy under the constant fatigue stress condition, and presented the thickness effect to a correlative equation, $U_{i}^{equ}=f(R_t)$ which is determined by the shape factor, thickness ratio, $R_t$ and the loading factor, equivalent effective stress intensity ratio depending on thickness, $U_{i}^{equ}$. And we analyzed quantitatively the crack growth retardation behavior in thin plate compared to thick plate by the thickness effect using ${\Delta}K$ conversion method. We obtained such values as decrement of thickness(DoT), decrement of stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$ (DoS) and identified the relation between them to present the nature of thickness effect in this work.

  • In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses was obtained at the test conditions of the higher temperature than the ambient temperature. The examination was performed with the CT specimen result of the material(JISG SUP9) which is being commonly used for the marine engine parts and the ocean structures. As a result, the test conditions at the higher temperature were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses of the specimens and the effect on the fatigue crack propagation speed da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δth in stage I. Also the material constant C and the fatigue crack propagation index m in the formula of Paris Law da/dN=C (ΔK)$^{m}$ were suggested to estimate the dependence on the test temperature.

  • In this study, corrosion fatigue test of SAPH45 steel was performed by the use of plane bending fatigue tester in marine environment and investigated fracture surface growth behavior of base metal and heat affected zone corrosion fatigue. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Fracture surface growth of heat affected zone (HAZ) is delayed more than that of base matel (BM), and they tend to faster in seawater than in air. 2) Corrosion sensitivity to corrosion fatigue life of HAZ is more susceptible than that of BM. 3)In the case of the corner crack by corrosion fatigue, the correlation between the propagation rate of fracture surface area(dA/dN) and stress intensity factor range(ΔK) for SAPH45 are applied to Paris rule as follows: dA/dN=C(ΔK) super(m) where m is the slope of the correlation, and is about 6.60-6.95 in air and about 6.33-6.41 in seawater respectively.

  • Corrosion fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of 316LN stainless steel was investigated in high-temperature pressurized water at different temperatures, load ratios (R = Kmax/Kmin) and rise times (tR). The environmental assisted effect on FCG rate was observed when both the R and tR exceeded their critical values. The FCG rate showed a linear relation with stress intensity factor range (ΔK) in double logarithmic coordinate. The environmental assisted effect on FCG rate depended on the ΔK and quantitative relations were proposed. Possible mechanisms of environmental assisted FCG rate under different testing conditions are also discussed.

  • Aluminum 5052/Aramid Fiber Reinforced Plastic(Al5052/AFRP) laminates are applied to the fuselage-wing intersection. The Al5052/AFRP laminates suffer from the cyclic bending moment of variable amplitude during the service. Therefore, the influence of cyclic bending moment on the delamination and the fatigue crack propagation behavior in Al5052/AFRP laminate was investigated in this study. Al5052/AFRP laminate composite consists of three thin sheets of Al5052 and two layers of unidirectional aramid fibers. The cyclic bending moment fatigue tests were performed with five different levels of bending moment. The shape and size of the delamination zone formed along the fatigue crack between Al5052 sheet and aramid fiber-adhesive layer were measured by an ultrasonic C-scan. The relationships between da/dN and ΔK, between the cyclic bending moment and the delamination zone size, and between the fiber bridging mechanism and the delamination zone were studied. Fiber failures were not observed in the delamination zone in this study. It represents that the fiber bridging modification factor should turn out to increase and that the fatigue crack growth rate should decrease. The shape of delamination zone turns out to be semi-elliptic with the contour decreased non-linearly toward the crack tip.
