  • Recent increase in the strength and frequency of typoons due to climate change claims reconsideration of the design wind load in existing design codes for civil engineering structures in which the basic wind speed is estimated based on meteorological data by mid 1990s. In this paper, based on wind speed data at 76 observatories in Korea from 1961 through 2008, the basic wind speeds which can be utilized in designing civil engineering structures including buildings and bridges are estimated using the statistical process. The return period of the wind speed for each location is determined using the Gumbel distribution. The results for considered locations are compared to the existing design codes. Also, for design applications, the wind speed map, which classifies the country into four basic wind speed zones, is proposed using the resulting basic wind speeds.

  • Background: Associations between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) A1298C polymorphism and esophageal cancer risk have been reported in many articles recently, but results were controversial. Therefore the present meta-analysis was conducted to to provide a more precise estimation. Methods: Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of associations. Results: Finally, six case-control studies involving a total of 1,302 cases and 2,391controls for the A1298C polymorphism were included. The meta-analysis showed that significantly increased risk for Asians (CC versus AA, OR=3.799, 95%CI=1.541-9.365, P=0.004; CCversusCA+AA, OR=3.997, 95%CI=1.614-9.900, P=0.003) and Caucasians (CC versus AA, OR=1.797, 95%CI=1.335-2.418, P=0.000; CC+CA versus AA,OR=1.240, 95%CI=1.031-1.492, P=0.022; CCversusCA+AA, OR=1.693, 95%CI=1.280-2.240, P=0.000). In addition, there was an association with risk for both ESCC (CC versus AA, OR=2.529, 95%CI=1.688-3.788, P=0.000; CCversusCA+AA, OR=2.572, 95%CI=1.761-3.758, P=0.000) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) (CC versus AA, OR=1.592, 95%CI=1.139-2.227, P=0.007; CC+CA versus AA,OR=1.247, 95%CI=1.016-1.530, P=0.035; CCversusCA+AA, OR=1.466, 95%CI=1.069-2.011, P=0.018). Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested associations of the A1298C polymorphism with increased risk of esophageal cancer in both Asians and Caucasians. In addition, we found that the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism might influence risk ofESCC and EAC in the overall studies.

  • This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.

  • In conventional analytical solutions for rainfall-induced soil slope stability, the Green-Ampt (1911) equation for estimating the saturation depth and the Skempton & DeLory (1957) equation for calculating the infinite slope shallow failure were compared with the numerical analysis to confirm the error. In the simple evaluation of the reason of soil slope instability due to rainfall using the conventional equations, there are many errors and, overestimation or underestimation of the calculation results. In this study, the equation consisting of the results obtained from infiltration analysis on unsaturated soil slope is proposed by applying the average range of the strength parameters of the granite weathered soils, and its reliability is verified by comparing with the numerical analysis results. The developed equation can be used easily in various fields for the estimation of slope safety factor by checking the rainfall duration and saturation depth.

  • Recently, as importance of quality control of the structure has been recognized, non-destructive testing, determining quality of the structure without damage, has been widely applied. However, its application has been primarily focused on laboratory development because variety of parameters in field has been not fully experienced and understood. This study aims to evaluate the field applicability of the ultrasonic testing method for PC beams. Material properties of 18 cylinders, cured in the same field condition, were measured up to 60 days and compared to those of the ultrasonic measurements from 34 PC beams in field before tensioning. Test results indicate that uni-axial strength and elastic modulus of PC beams can be predicted within reasonable range using the ultrasonic technique. However, it is also noted that considerations on field condition is required to increase the reliability of estimation.

  • In this study, the displacement-based design concept, the performance by the existing reinforced concerte column and steel reinforced concrete composite column for SRC purchased the maximum design ground acceleration improvement compared to the performance design. SRC have several advantages such as strength enhancement and high ductility. H-beam or steel tubes were used for embedded elements of the SRC composite columns. SRC cross-section for the P-M diagram and analysis on the nominal bending monent SRC designed for composite columns for disparity estimation is presented to the displacement-based seismic design. Performance improvement of the performance-based design performance targets for the design seismic displacement and design criteria for the direct displacement-based design methods and to improve the seismic performance due to the displacement coefficient method is proposed to design. SRC compared with the RC column designed to improve the performance and displacement ductility ratio displacement results in the performance design results showed significantly improved performance.

  • The seismic control effect of reinforced concrete structures with low energy dissipating capacity due to stiffness degradation is investigated through nonlinear time history analysis. The primary structure is idealized as a SDOF system of modified Takeda hysteresis rule and an elasto-perfectly-plastic nonlinear spring is added to represent a hysteretic damping device. Based on statistics of the numerical analysis, equivalent linearization techniques are evaluated, and empirical equations for response prediction are proposed. As a result, estimation of the ductility demand with proposed empirical equations is more desirable than the equivalent linearization techniques. The optimal yield strengths based on empirical equations are significantly different from the optimal yield strength of elasto-perfectly-plastic systems. Also, the results indicate that the reduction effect of the ductility demand is more remarkable for smaller natural periods.

  • Defect assessment of a weld zone is important in fitness-for-service evaluation of plant components. Typically a J and $C^*$ estimation method for a defective homogeneous component is extended to a mismatched component, by incorporating the effect due to the strength mismatch between the weld metal and the base material. The key element is a mismatch limit load. For instance, the R6/R5 procedure employs an equivalent material concept, defined by a mismatch limit load. A premise is that if a proper mismatch limit load solution is available, the same concept can be used for any defect location (either a weld centre defect or a heat affected zone (HAZ) defect) and for any material combination (either two-material or multi-material combinations; either similar or dissimilar joints). However, validation is still limited, and thus a more systematic investigation is needed to generalise the suggestion to any geometry, any defect location and any material combination. This paper describes the effect of structural geometry on the $C^*$ integral for defective similar welds, based on systematic elastic-creep 2-D and 3-D finite element (FE) analyses, to attempt to elucidate the questions given above. It is found that the existing 'equivalent material' concept is valid only for limited cases, although it provides conservative estimates of $C^*$ for most of cases. A modification to the existing equivalent material concept is suggested to improve accuracy.

  • Properties of $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ alloy powder produced by helium gas atomization process were investigated by using DSC, XRD, SEM and TEM. The powders below 32 ${\mu}m$ in diameter were identified as an amorphous phase mixed with a ${\alpha}-Al$ phase. $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy was manufactured by hot extruding the alloy powders at various temperatures, and the estimation of its mechanical properties was carried out subsequently. As a result, the bulk alloy extruded at the temperature below $450^{\circ}C$ exhibited the microstructure in which the near-spherical shape of some powders below 20 ${\mu}m$ were nearly unchanged and fine voids between matrix and powders were formed during extrusion process. On the other hand, the tensile strength and elongation at room temperature for $Al_{86}Ni_6Ce_4Mg_4$ bulk alloy extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ were 750 MPa and 7.5%, respectively.

  • This study investigates the response of structures to tunnelling-induced ground movements in sand ground, varying tunnel excavation condition (tunnel depth and diameter), tunnel construction condition (ground loss), ground condition (loose sand and dense sand). Four-story block-bearing structures have been used because the structueres can easily be characterized of the extent of dmages with crack size and distribution. Numerical parametric studies have been used to investigae of the response of structures to varying tunnelling conditions. Numerical analysis has been conducted using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The results of structure responses from various parametric studies have been integrated to consider tunnel excavation condition, tunnel construction condition, and ground condition and provided as a relationship chart. Using the chart, the response of structures to tunnelling can easily be evaluated in practice in sand ground.
