In this study, Hoek-Brown constants (mi) were calculated through nonlinear regression analyses using the results of the triaxial compression tests for the basaltic intact rocks in Jeju Island. The relationships of the mi with the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) and UCS/BTS of the Jeju basalts were investigated, respectively. In addition, a method that can be used in determining Hoek-Brown failure envelopes including the tensile and compressive failures of the Jeju basalts has been proposed. As results, the mi values had no clear correlations with the UCS, BTS and UCS/BTS of the Jeju basalts, but there were two strong correlations between UCS and mi/UCS, and between BTS and mi/BTS of the Jeju basalts. In addition, it was found that the tensile strengths calculated by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion underestimate the tensile strengths of the Jeju basalts through the relationship between the mi and UCS/BTS of the Jeju basalts. The method presented in this study is considered to be useful in determining the Hoek-Brown failure envelope for the tensile and compressive failures of the Jeju basalts.
Stone column is a soil improvement method and can be applicable for loose sand or weak cohesive soil. Since the lack of sand, stone column seems one of the most adaptable approach for poor ground as a soil improvement technique. However, this method was not studied for practical application. In this paper, the bearing capacity of single stone column at the Gaduk, Ulsan and Gwangyang under the bulging and general shear failure mode were compared with those of the suggested formulas. Especially, a test result of single stone column at the Busan area by static load was compared with the bearing capacity of suggested formulas. The analysis results showed that there were not much bearing capacity differences among those suggested bearing capacity formulas. However, the bearing capacity by static load test was almost double of those with suggested formula. The result also showed that the undrained shear strength was the most important parameter for the bearing capacity estimation of stone column.

Sequential quick crushing and alkali hydrolysis(SeCAH), as a pretreatment for foodwaste, incorporating mechanical crushing and alkali hydrolysis was proposed and investigated in this study. Focuses were placed on the improvement of biodegradability of foodwaste and the estimation of potential inhibitors for anaerobic digestion. The solubility of the pretreated foodwaste by SeCAH was increased 2.5 times rather than mechanical crushing. Considering solubility improvement and energy consumption, 2,000 rpm of crushing strength and 5$\sim$10 sec of crushing time are recommended. After SeCAH, the fraction of large organic particles(>2.36 mm) of foodwaste was sharply decreased from 88.0% to 29.0%, otherwise the fraction of small particles(<75 $\mu$m) was greatly increased from 10.5% to 40.7%. Ammouinum, potassium and sulfate were estimated as potential inhibitors for anaerobic digestion and their concentrations in pig slurry were 3331.3 mg/L, 4256.5 mg/L and 1017.5 mg/L, respectively.
The rebound hardness test using the SilverSchmidt hammer was performed for diorite, granodiorite, and andesite exposed around the King Sejong Station, Barton peninsula. Then, the R-value and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of these rocks were estimated from the Q-values which were obtained from the SilverSchmidt hammer. The Q-value of diorite was distributed in the range from 67.0 to 89.5, granodiorite of the range from 57.5 to 89.0, and andesite of the range from 58.0 to 76.5. The average Q-values of diorite, granodiorite, and andesite were 76.0, 72.0, and 67.0, respectively. The converted UCS of diorite was distributed in the range from 118 to 195 MPa, granodiorite of the range from 91 to 193 MPa, and andesite of the range from 92 to 148 MPa. The average UCS of diorite, granodiorite, and andesite were 147, 136, and 117 MPa, respectively. The converted R-value of diorite was distributed in the range from 53.0 to 72.2, granodiorite of the range from 45.4 to 71.8, and andesite of the range from 45.8 to 60.9. The average Q-values of diorite, granodiorite, and andesite were 60.0, 58.0, and 53.0, respectively. The R-value was represented approximately 20% lower than the Q-value. In conclusion, it will be possibile that the R-value and UCS of rocks under the extreme area from the SilverSchmidt Q-value are evaluated.
PURPOSES : This study examines the performance changes of road networks according to the strength of a disaster, and proposes a method for estimating the quantitative resilience according to the road-network performance changes and damage scale. This study also selected high-influence road sections, according to disasters targeting the road network, and aimed to analyze their hazard resilience from the network aspect through a scenario analysis of the damage recovery after a disaster occurred. METHODS : The analysis was conducted targeting Sejong City in South Korea. The disaster situation was set up using the TransCAD and VISSIM traffic-simulation software. First, the study analyzed how road-network damage changed the user's travel pattern and travel time, and how it affected the complete network. Secondly, the functional aspects of the road networks were analyzed using quantitative resilience. Finally, based on the road-network performance change and resilience, priority-management road sections were selected. RESULTS : According to the analysis results, when a road section has relatively low connectivity and low traffic, its effect on the complete network is insignificant. Moreover, certain road sections with relatively high importance can suffer a performance loss from major damage, for e.g., sections where bridges, tunnels, or underground roads are located, roads where no bypasses exist or they exist far from the concerned road, including entrances and exits to suburban areas. Relatively important roads have the potential to significantly degrade the network performance when a disaster occurs. Because of the high risk of delays or isolation, they may lead to secondary damage. Thus, it is necessary to manage the roads to maintain their performance. CONCLUSIONS : As a baseline study to establish measures for traffic prevention, this study considered the performance of a road network, selected high-influence road sections within the road network, and analyzed the quantitative resilience of the road network according to scenarios. The road users' passage-pattern changes were analyzed through simulation analysis using the User Equilibrium model. Based on the analysis results, the resilience in each scenario was examined and compared. Sections where a road's performance loss had a significant influence on the network were targeted. The study results were judged to become basic research data for establishing response plans to restore the original functions and performance of the destroyed and damage road networks, and for selecting maintenance priorities.

In order to obtain fundamental data for estimation of fisheries resource by echo sounder, we carried out the measuring of dorsal aspect Target strengths for rock bream and dusky spinefoot fishes that were caught much around the Jeju Island and in South Sea of Korea. The appropriate equations share the common form. TS=A+20 log L, where TS is the average dorsal aspect target strength in decibels, L is the fish total length in centimeters, and the coefficient A is determined by a least mean squares regression analysis. For rock bream, the result is TS=-72.97+20 log L and, for dusky spinefoot it is TS=-63.16+20 log L And, we have investigated the bearing range of maximum dorsal aspect target strength for all of rock bream and dusky spinefoot by the echo sounder with transducer of which frequency is 200kHz. They are $-12^\circ$-$-21^\circ$and $-1^\circ$--8 espectively, when the fishes is swimming down to the bottom. The maximum dorsal target strengths are -41.50dB at -18 or rock bream and -30.69dB at $-6^\circ$for dusky spinefoot.

This research aims at the optimal constitution of sensors required to identify the structural shortcoming of roller-coaster. In this research we analyzed the dynamic characteristics of roller-coaster by three dimensional FE modelling, decided on the appropriate location and number of sensors through optimal transducer theory, abstracted the mathematical value of modal features before and after damage on the basis of optimally placed and numbered sensors. and then presented it as a primary information about the basic structure which would be applied to damage estimation. As a target structure, the roller-coater at Seoul Children's Grand Park was chosen and built as a model reduced by one twentieth in size. In order to consider the Kinetics features particular to the roller-coaster structure, we made an exact three-dimensional FE modelling for the model structure by means of Spline function. As for the proper location and number of sensors, it was done by applying EIM and EOT. We also estimated the damage from the combination of strength, flexibility, and model corelation after abstracting the value of modal features. Finally the optimal transducer theory presented here in this research was proved to be valid, and the structural damage was well identified through changes in strength and flexibility. As a result, we were able to present the optimal constitution of sensors needed for the analysis of dynamic characteristics and the development of techniques in dynamic characteristics, which would ultimately contribute to the development of health monitoring for roller-coaster.
Mechanical properties and microleakage of two composites [conventional hybrid type DenFil (VERICOM Co., Anyang, Korea) / micro matrix hybrid type Esthet X (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, U.S.A.)] were evaluated to assess whether variable light intensity curing is better than conventional curing technique. Curing was done for 40 seconds in two ways of 2 step soft-start technique and 5 step ramping technique. Three kinds of light intensities of 50, 100, $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ were initially used for 10, 20, 30 seconds each and the maximum intensity of $600 {\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ was used for the rest of curing time in a soft-start curing tech nique. In a ramping technique, curing was done with the same initial intensities and the light intensity was increased 5 times with the same rate to the maximum intensity of $600{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. After determining conditions that showed no different mechanical properties with conventional technique, Esthet X composite was filled in a class V cavity, which dimension was $4{\times}3{\times}1.5{\;}mm$ and cured under those conditions. Microleakage was evaluated in two ways of dye penetration and maximum gap estimation through SEM observation. ANOVA and Spearman's rho test were used to confirm any statistical significance among groups. The results were as follows : 1 Several curing conditions of variable light intensities resulted in the similar mechanical properties with a conventional continuous curing technique, except conditions that start curing with an initial light intensity of $50{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. 2. Conventional and ramping techniques were better than soft-start technique in mechanical properties of microhardness and compressive strength. 3. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $100{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the least dye penetration. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the smallest marginal gap, if there was no difference among groups. 4. Soft-start technique resulted in better dye-proof margin than conventional technique(p=0.014) and ramping technique(p = 0.002). 5. There was a very low relationship(p=0.157) between the methods of dye penetration and marginal gap determination through SEM evaluation. From the results of this study, it was revealed that ramping technique would be better than conventional technique in mechanical properties, however, soft-start technique might be better than conventional one in microleakage. It was concluded that much endeavor should be made to find out the curing conditions, which have advantages of both aspects or to solve these kinds of problems through a novel idea of polymerization.

In this study, we investigated the stone materials used in the Woldae of Kwanghwamun gate to estimate their provenances. The Woldae was partly reconstructed in 2010 using red-colored original stone and greyish new stone. We carried out geological survey in Mt. Bukhan (Bukhansan) and Mt. Surak (Suraksan) to estimate the source of stone, where red-colored granitic rocks are widely distributed. Though the petrographical features of the granitic rocks from the surveyed area are quite similar, there exists a slight variation of magnetic susceptibility and color index of the rocks: the granitic rocks from Mt. Surak have higher value of magnetic susceptibility and clearer reddish feature. A series of evidence, such as historical records, stone cutting traces and petrographical features, for the source of stone materials used in the Woldae tells that Mt. Surak would have been the provenance for the stone materials used in the Woldae. We also conducted a nondestructive test to examine the physical property of the rocks. The original stone shows low compressive strength (147 MPa) due to the weathering, whereas the rock in Mt. Surak has higher compressive strength (244 MPa) capable of being used as building materials. If there were any difficulties to use the granitic rocks in Mt. Surak, some granitic rocks that have similar petrological characteristics, such as Changsu stone and Yeongjung stone from the Pocheon area, could be used as building material instead.

Quantitative stability assessment of underground cavities can be presented as a factor of safety based on the Shear Strength Reduction Method (SSRM). Also, SSRM is one of the stability evaluation methods commonly used in slope stability analysis. However, there is a lack of research that considers the relationship between the probability of occurrence of cavities in the ground and the potential failure surface of the slope at the same time. In this study, the effect of small underground cavities on the failure behavior of the slope was analyzed by using SSRM. Considering some of the glaciology studies, there is a case that suggests that there is a cavity effect inside the glacier in the condition that the glacier slides. In this study, the stability evaluation of underground cavities and slope stability analysis, where SSRM is used in geotechnical engineering field, was carried out considering simultaneous conditions. The slope stability analysis according to the shape and position change of underground cavities which are likely to occur in the lower part of a mountain road was analyzed by using SSRM in FLAC3D software and the influence of underground cavities on the slope factor of safety was confirmed. If there are underground cavities near slope potential failure surface, it will affect the calculation of a factor of safety. The results of this study are expected to be basic data on slope stability analysis with small underground cavities.
