This study surveys the degree of residents' satisfaction on the current street space to suggest alternatives for the improvement of the street space design in detached house areas. In the results of the survey, we find the following. First, in the result of analysis on age, residential term, having children or not, income level, and type of house ownership, residents are homogeneous in social and economic characteristics. There are similarity in geographical, locational conditions, neighboring facilities, deterioration of residential house, and the time of residential formation among residential areas. Second, satisfactory determinants of residents on street space according to street types, are maintenance, protection of privacy, and parking space. Third, satisfactory determinants of residents on street hierarchy is the inner circulation road while unsatisfactory one is the inner roads. Fourth, age, residential term and type of house ownership are significant factors influencing residents' satisfaction. Factors influencing satisfaction on street space are also affecting total satisfaction and factors associated with street environment are perceived more important ones than factors associated with street activities. Thus we find the degrees of satisfaction for residents on street type and street hierarchy are different despite that general characteristics of residents are similar. We also find residents consider street noise and maintenance as critical factor among physical factors of street space.
In Korea, the top priority of the exterior space in the urban commercial street has been put on the road and parking for cars, not on the street for pedestrians, because of the lack of institutional urban planning, the land use of high density, the pursuit of maximum commercial profit, etc. Also, it is true that the form and facade of the street buildings which form the characteristics of the commercial street are regarded as the consumption-stimulating tool and, subsequently, are symbolized for commercial profit. This study starts from the recognition of reality, and, with the perspective of general plan for urban exterior space, tries to improve the environmental design of street space. Also, this study searches the ways to enhance the cultural, art, aesthetic and functional values of a city, as well as the ways to promote commercial activities and to perform commercial symbolism and pedestrian functions. This study aims at exploring the importance of street environmental design and the information of environmental design, so that the problems of current street environment, which generates the disorder and chaos of information, may be solved. Also, this study aims at promoting the continuous development for the future street environmental design and design plan.

This paper presents a streetscape design for the 'Gaeksa-gil', located in Gosa-dong and Jungang-dong, Jeonju City, which length is about 830m and width is about $8\sim10m$. The goals of the design are to make a street on which people want to walk and rest both safely and pleasantly. To achieve these goals; concepts of identity, history, placeness, commercial vitality, environmentally-friendliness, safety, amenity , and democracy have been developed. For the pedestrian safety; shared street concepts, such as crank, salalom, fort, mini-rotary etc. are adopted. For design method, community participatory design is adapted. For the design theme; the axes of Time and Space are developed and streets are divided into 3 thematic spaces, such as 'History Street,' 'Nature Street,' and 'Culture Street.' The History Street, which belongs to Time axis, is a space for experiencing past, present, and future history of Jeonju city. Nature Street, which belongs to Space axis, is a space for feeling and loaming the nature of the city. The Culture Street, which also belongs to Space axis, is a space for experiencing the culture of the city. The community participated in the whole design process through the workshop, the internet website, the street events, etc.
Street furniture such as benches, streetlamps, and shades which are easily accessible in cities has contributed to the promotion of active, lively environment for people living in cities. Furthermore, they make the characteristics of specific regions and cities, and are valued as a communication interface to restore the relationships between people and cities. The street furniture design with inherent publicness is an essential element for leisurely life and refined image of modern people who have experienced severance and mental poverty in uniform, vertical modern city space with the development of advanced science and technology. The purpose of this study is to analyze the new design approaches to street furniture which plays an important role in the determination of the images of modern city environment and to examine the characteristics and trends of such designs. First, in accordance with the flow of studies from publicness and public space to street furniture, the concept and meaning of publicness which is the basic element of public space were identified through theoretical examination, and the characteristics and roles of modern public space were analyzed through literature review, data review, and international cases. Based on the results of this theoretical analysis, the concept and meaning elements, function elements, and design elements of the street furniture which was planned in accordance with the goal and functions of public space were identified. For the meaning elements of street furniture design, fun, health, culture, sustainability, and vitalization were identified. For the function elements of street furniture design, convenience, safety, and delivery were identified. As the characteristics of modern street furniture design, convergent, green, digilog, functional, and universal designs were analyzed. This study is meaningful in that it recognized the roles of street furniture in modern public space as a concrete, practical environmental design element and estimated the development directions of street furniture design in public space.

The purpose of this study is to apply the types of urban street pattern and the shape of streets to the master plan of a religious community complexes. The street pattern is a framework of urban structure and to understand the urban structure is helpful to understand the nature of urban streets. By analysing the precedent researches, the types of street patterns are classified as a serial pattern, a branching pattern, a grid pattern and a web pattern. The street patterns are hierarchically composed and classified as a differential development and sequential development. There are boundaries and gates where the street space is differentiated to the more private level. The urban streets continue to the architectural streets such as arcades, deck streets, corridors, lobbies and halls. The purposes and results of the master plan of this religious community complexes are as follows. 1) The school area, housing area and service area are properly separated and connected. They are separated by the building masses and connected by the street space in between. 2) The street pattern of this complexes is a serial pattern where the streets are the center of each functional building groups. The entry square is divided by the symbolic building. The one branch is school street and the other is living street. These streets are combined again to the festival street. 3) The architectural streets are organically related to the urban streets. 4) Each street spaces are of adequate form according to its properties as a place. 5) There are boundaries or gates such as a gab between buildings, posts, arches and deck streets according to the relationship between streets.
What is Art on the street? Is it a series of artworks or activities performed on the street? In other words, does "art on the street" refer to "Street Art" such as street performance, happening, graffiti, or wall-painting, or does it refer to "Street Furniture" which is related to "City Design" or "Environmental Design"? In a formal sense, they all belong to Art on the street. However, in this paper, I would like to use Art on the street in an even broader sense. To me, " the street" is a metaphor of "environment." Thus Art on the street is the art related to environment; it is an environment art. Art on the street attests the expansion of the concept of art and shows a new possibility of contemporary art. It is a promising new concept of art, but we cannot ignore the misapplication of the concept that we can find at the crossroad of Art on the street and "city beautification." Of course, Art on the street can and sometimes needs to beautify the city. However we still need to ask how to contribute to the city beautification with Art on the street and how to validate such a practice. City space is, most of all, a space that people live in. It sounds a cliche, but it is worth repeating to better understand Art on the street. When we consider the city space in terms of its system or organization, we often overlook that it is the space in which people live, and which people create. Art on the street concerns not the city itself, but the space in which people live and make relations for each other. Without taking this into account, Art on the street becomes a mere means to' embellish' the city and falls prey to the logic of capital. In this paper, I critically reviewed the problems such as City Development, Spectacularization, City Environmental Design, Public Interest and City Museum. I intended to emphasize that Art on the street is produced in the cultural space of city, but it also tends to break the mold of the cultural space and seeks a new possibility. Some might argue that my claims are unrealistic because Art on the street is not an idea but a practice. While humbly accepting the objection, I hope my critical suggestions guide a more productive direction to continue our discussions of Art on the street.
This is a study on methods for designers of furniture and products to generate and develop design concept in consideration of design and existing conditions of the space when they design street furniture. In particular, in case when they participate in a process of designing new space, this study aims to reveal methods generating strategic elements and basic ideas for designing street furniture through cases study of projects by understanding and analyzing concept of overall space design and by extracting artistic elements for deployment of specific designs. First, Design DNA, which decides overall flow of design concept of street furniture, is extracted through analyses of basic concepts of space design. Next, by applying 3V Design Process, alternatives of the concept generation are suggested through methods of storytelling and design language under the two approach methods of verbalization stage and visualization stage. Also its methods were explored through suggestion of designs by developing each idea of the respective concepts into specific design vocabulary.

Along with the development in cutting-edge digital technology, the street space is also being changed. Mobile telecommunication units and internet give a big change in a human being's lifestyle. And the ubiquitous computing is proceeding with expanding its application range from the indoor space to the street space. As the street furniture is the convenient facility that allows a human being's life in street space to be abundant, it is getting advanced. First of all, in terms of such phenomenon, this study analyzed the cases of a research on application of street space and the actual condition of a change in the number of individuals for the street furniture, through a literature research of ubiquitous. Also, it researched into the realities of using the street furniture of the walking-desired streets at Daehac-ro and Hongdae district, where are two representative places related to digital generation. The next was carried out FGI (Focus Group Interview) with users of the street space in front of Hongik University and managers of the street furniture, and was researched into the use & management behavior, and recognition level on the street furniture. Thus, the key elements were extracted such as interchange of information for cultural activities, automation for interaction variability in function. Finally the core elements for future vision of street furniture in this digital era were extracted in 3I, namely, Information, Intellectualization, and Integration. This is considered to be applied to the establishment of direction in the process of high-tech digitalization in street furniture related to information hereafter.

A street, as a linear factor constituting the city, is an axis of urban development. The substantial function of the street is the traffic space for the passage but now it plays the important role of the place of community where contains various activities such as meeting between people and people, rest, entertainment etc. A street is basically the 3 dimensional space consisted of the sidewalk, roadway and the roadside structures surrounding the street. In this case, the roadside structures are the physical composition factors for the street space and the facade of the roadside structures acts as important variables to form the image of street space. Thus, this study is to provide the basic data to be applied in the future urban street landscape plan by extracting the superior factors in visual and perceptional aspects which affect the image of street view from the shape composition factors which constitute the facade of the roadside structures, and by searching and analyzing the satisfaction degree and preference of each factors.
This study examines the properties of spaces where historical and cultural resources have been preserved in the street system of Daegu Yakryeong market district, by using Space Syntax methodology. The results were obtained through ASA(Angular Segment Analysis) on each node (spatial unit) in the street network. An overall characteristic of spatial configuration in street system of the surveyed district is that nodes in the street network tend to form socially integrated spatial structure to allow easy access to each space in the system. There are a small number of socially isolated spaces in the street system, which are located at nodes in narrow streets adjacent to the roadway outside the district, or in narrow alleys between early modern Korean buildings. More than half of the surveyed spaces have high levels of social integration, which contain buildings playing a central role of the community, a traditional street market, symbolic landmarks. In conclusion, it is expected that the achievements of this study will contribute in leading to rational land use planning for sound and sustainable development of historical and cultural resources in an urban district.
