  • Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), a herbaceous perennial crop, is a popular fruit crop with high economical and nutritive values. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the runner training angle (RTA) on the length of internodes and number of runners produced in strawberry 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' in an attempt to achieve a higher production rate of runner plants and increase the propagation efficiency. Runners were trained for 30 days to grow at an angle of 0° (vertically upward), 45°, 90° (horizontal), 135°, or 180° (hanging down) from the upward vertical axis. The experiment was carried out in a glasshouse with 29/20℃ day/night temperatures, an average light intensity of 450 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD coming from the sun, and a natural photoperiod of 12 hours. For both 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang', the RTA affected number and length of runners, and number and fresh and dry weights of runner plants. Training at an angle of 135° or 180° shortened length of runners and internodes in 'Seolhyang'. These RTAs also produced runner plants with the lowest fresh and dry weights in both cultivars. The RTA did not affect the runner diameter, but affected the runner morphology in both cultivars. As compared to a RTA of 135°, a 180° RTA increased number of runner plants produced, making it the most proliferative RTA.

  • The study involved determination of resistance levels of spider mites ta argano-phosphates using topical application and slide dip techniques; laboratory serening tests of alternative acaricides using an O/P resistant strain and a field trial of the screened materials. 1. Strains of Tetranychus were from Timaru(TR), Havelock Narth (HNR), Lincaln (LN). Germany (GR, GN). Comparisons of the resistant strains and normal strains at the LD50 and LC50 levels were as follows : (a) Using the topical application tochnique; with Parathian. resistant levels of the GR. TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were respeativuly, 1035. 484 and 452 times as resistant' as the LN strain. (b) Using the slide dip technique; with Phosdrin, resistant of GR, TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were 635, 274 and 266 times greater respeativuly, than the GN strain. 2. The laboratory sereaning tests were carried out far their contact plus stomach and residual effect to assess the toxicities of eleven alternative materials which would be used far control of O/P resistant strain of T. urticae. The acaricide groups represented were 3 organo-chlorines (Spidex, Kelthane and C 8514), 2 nitrophenyls (UC 19786 and Morocide), 2 cyclic carbonates(Eradex and Morestan). I carbamate (UC2004 7A), 1 mixture of carbamate and orano-chlorine and 2 other chemicals (C 8677 and M2527). From all acaricide tested. Kelthane and Morocide were the most effective, folowed by Spidex and M2527. Morestan, C8514. C8677 and RS 143 were intermediate, but Eradex, UC 19786 and UC 20046A were poor. 3, The number of sapmles required for estimation of the population in the field evaluation of acaricidal effects was one giving the highest practical precision. It was decided, after preliminary sampling trials. to use samples of 30 leaves per replicate which gave a $5.7\%$ standard error. 4. In the field trials, Morocide applied at the $0.05\%\;and\; 0.04\%$ a. i. conc. to black currant trees gave excellent control of O/P resistant population of T. urticae for about 12 days, but Morocide 0.025 and Kel thane $0.02\%$ a. i. cone. gave efficient control for about 6 days. In other words. first applications of Kel thane ane Moroeide gave very high degrees of control of O/P resistant population of the two-spotted spider mite. However, the results indicate that secondary application would sometimes be necessary. There was no foliage damage of black Currants and strawberries by either acaricides at the concentrations used. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the food behaviors and food preferences of teenagers by regional groups. The subjects were composed of 365 third grade students in middle schools from urban, rural and fishing areas in Kyungpook province. The data was collected by using a survey questionnaire. The results of the study are summarized as follows: Eating habits of 21-47% of the subjects, according to the regions, were poor and female students in large city showed the best eating habits while female students in fishing village showed the poorest eating habits. Out of the three regional groups studied, the subjects from the fishing villages had the highest rates of skipping meals and eating between meals. Out of all the people investigated, thirty to forty percent had unbalanced diets, the highest percentage coming from the urban areas and the lowest from the fishing villages. All together an allergic reaction to food was the highest in the fishing villages' subjects and female students were more sensitive compared to the male students. Students from the urban area had higher frequency of symptoms of lactose intolerance. Upon the investigation of the subjects 'food preferences, they preferred boiled rice to any other rice as a staple food. Cha jang myun was the most preferred out of all noodles and breads. It was found that teenagers preferred one course meal such as fried rice to a rice-centered regular meal. Out of all various meat soups, beef soup and beef-rib soup were preferred the most. As for subsidiary foods the most preferred were soybean paste stew and cuttlefish stew which they ate daily. There was a very high preference for fried foods, the most favored being pork cutlet followed by fried vegetables, sweet potatoes, and minced meat. The most preferred cooked vegetables were bean sprouts and seasoned cucumber. Seasoned cubed radish roots were the most preferred kind of kimchi. For desserts there was a very high preference for the following fruits: apples, plums, strawberries, and oranges. For beverages the most popular choice were chocolate drinks followed by orange juice, apple juice, milk and tomato juice. According to these investigations, most teenagers liked daily foods which they are used to. The study showed that on the whole the teenagers had poor eating habits. A problem that needs immediate attention is that female students and students from the fishing villages have a high rate of skipping meals. It is expected that the results of this food preference test of teenagers could be useful in the meal planning of middle school lunch programs in the future.

  • Isolates of Botrytis cinerea resistant to dicarboximide fungicides were collected from strawberry fields in greenhouses in spring and early summer of 1990. Five out of 9 isolates of B. cinera were resistant, which showed mycerial growth on PDA containing dicarboximide fungicides(procymidone and vinclozolin) with concentrations of 100, 400 and $1,600{\mu}g/ml$. The minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) values of the dicaboximide-resistant isolates was more than $6,400{\mu}g/ml$, while that of the sensitive isolates was less than $6.25{\mu}g/ml$. The germination ratio of conidia of the resistant isolates on PDA containing procymidone and vincolozolin was more than 95%, while that of the sensitive was less than 15%. The procymidone-resistant isolates were also resistant to vinclozolin, showing cross-resistant between the fungicides, but cross-resistant was not observed between the dicarboximides and dichlofluanid. Resistance to benomyl was also found in all the dicarboximide resistant isolates. Occurrence frequency of dicarboximide-resistant isolates out of 223 isolates was about 40%. The resistant isolates were widely distributed throughout Korea.

  • Ellagic acid (EA) is a phenolic compound in fruits and nuts including raspberries, strawberries, grapes and walnuts. Previous studies have indicated that EA possesses antioxidant activity, growth-inhibition and apoptosis-promoting activity in cancer cells. However, macrophage mediated cytotoxicity and immunomodulating effects on cancer cells have not been clarified. In the present study, we show that EA increased effects on macrophage mediated tumoricidal activity and NO production without direct tumor cell cytotoxicity. To further determine whether TLR4 (toll like receptor 4) is involved in anti-tumor activity, cells were treated TLR4 signaling inhibitor, CLI-095 in the presence of EA. CLI-095 treatment partially reduced macrophage-mediated tumoridial activity. EA also has inhibitory effects of NO production induced by LPS, whereas phagocytic activity was not changed. These results suggest that EA induces macrophage mediated tumoricidal activity which is partially related to TLR4 signaling and has a potential adjuvant in cancer therapy.

  • Residual contamination levels of natural microflora in strawberries were evaluated. Approximate counts of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, total coliforms, and lactic acid bacteria were 8, 2, and 3 log CFU/g, respectively, whereas those of Escherichia coli and yeasts/molds were under the detection limit (<10 cells/g). Growth inhibition degrees of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, total coliforms, and lactic acid bacteria were also evaluated based on three hurdles of preservative, storage temperature, and pH of strawberry paste prepared as model system. Strawberry paste was stored at low ($4^{\circ}C$), room ($20^{\circ}C$), and high ($37^{\circ}C$) temperatures. Potassium sorbate was added as a preservative up to 0.1%. Acidity of strawberry paste was adjusted to pH 4 or 7. During 7-day storage, inhibitory effects of the hurdles against bacterial groups were: storage temperature > pH of strawberry paste > addition of potassium sorbate. Combination of three hurdles most effectively inhibited growth of residual microflora.

  • To prevent damage to the cargo, monitoring and remote management for reefer containers is necessary. The currently used remote monitoring service is the Power Cable Transmission(PCT) system, which is recommended by the International Maritime Organization(IMO). However, this system is not widely used because it requires a separate PCT infrastructure and is susceptible to data loss problems. To solve this problem, this study introduces the "IoT-based reefer container management system", The proposed system which is attached to reefer container collects and transmits data on the temperature, status and location of reefer container to middleware using RS-232 communication and WCDMA/GSM communication. Middleware is store the data received in the database and provide information to user in real time through the web and mobile program. At this time, users able to change setting temperature in real time from a distant place through the web program. This study tested by transit about shipment of strawberries to monitor and analyze and check the system's overall effectiveness.

  • The effects of plastic container vent ratio on fruit quality during strawberry precooling and storage were analyzed. Plastic containers ($520mm{\times}355mm{\times}182mm$) were manufactured with bottom and side vents at areal ratios of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. Fruit was loaded at a volume ratio of 80% prior to pressure cooling and storage at $5^{\circ}C$. The internal fruit temperature was $18^{\circ}C$ and the times taken to attain $2^{\circ}C$ after precooling were 1 hour 9 minutes, 1 hour 13 minutes, 2 hours 2 minutes, and 2 hours 51 minutes at vent ratios of 20%, 15%, 10%, and 5%, respectively. To mimic the current distribution system, precooled strawberries were packaged in tray wrapping and stored at $5^{\circ}C$. Changes in weight, bruising, extent of decay, and firmness, were measured. Weight loss, bruising, and decay were highest at a vent ratio of 20%, lowest at a vent ratio of 15%, and moderate at vent ratios of 5% and 10%. No significant among-treatment difference in fruit firmness was evident.
