  • The main purpose of this study is to characterize the size-dependent strain rate sensitivity in structural steel using the continue stiffness measurement (CSM) indentation. A series of experiments, such as CSM indentation and optical microscope examination, has been performed at the room temperature at different rate conditions. The results indicated that indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress showed size-dependent behavior. The dependency of indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress on the indentation size was attributed to the transition of the dislocation nucleation rate and the dislocation behaviors during the indentation process. Since both hardness and strain rate showed the size-dependent behavior, SRS tended to depend on the indentation depth. The results indicated that the SRS was quite high over 2.0 at the indentation depth of 240 nm and quickly dropping to 0.08, finally around 0.046 at large indents. The SRS values at large indentations strongly agree with the general range reported for several types of low-carbon steel in the literature (Chatfield and Rote 1974, Nguyen et al. 2018b, Luecke et al. 2005). The results from the present study can be used in both static and dynamic analyses of structures as well as to assess and understand the deformation mechanism and the stress-state of material underneath the indenter tip during the process of the indentation testing.

  • This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.

  • In this paper, the global study trends for material behaviors are investigated regarding the static and dynamic hardenings and final fractures of marine structural steels. In particular, after reviewing all of the papers published at the 4th and 5th ICCGS (International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ship), the used hardening and fracture properties are summarized, explicitly presenting the material properties. Although some studies have attempted to employ new plasticity and fracture models, it is obvious that most still employed an ideal hardening rule such as perfect plastic or linear hardening and a simple shear fracture criterion with an assumed value of failure strain. HSE (2001) presented pioneering study results regarding the temperature dependency of material strain hardening at various levels of temperature, but did not show strain rate hardening at intermediate or high strain rate ranges. Nemat-Nasser and Guo (2003) carried out fully coupled tests for DH-36 steel: strain hardening, strain rate hardening, and temperature hardening and softening at multiple steps of strain rates and temperatures. The main goal of this paper is to provide the theoretical background for strain and strain rate hardening. In addition, it presents the procedure and methodology needed to derive the material constants for the static hardening constitutive equations of Ludwik, Hollomon, Swift, and Ramberg-Osgood and for the dynamic hardening constitutive equations of power from Cowper-Symonds and Johnson-Cook.

  • The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.

  • Many materials including cementitious concrete-type materials undergo material property changes during high-rate loading. There is a wealth of research regarding this phenomenon for concrete in compression and tension. However, there is minimal knowledge about how mortar material used in concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction behaves in high-rate shear loading. A series of experiments was conducted to examine the bond strength of mortar bonded to CMU units under high-rate shear loading. A novel experimental setup using a shock tube and dynamic ram were used to load specially constructed shear triplets in a double lap shear configuration with no pre-compression. The Finite Element Method was leveraged in conjunction with data from the experimental investigation to establish if the shear bond between concrete masonry units and mortar exhibits any rate dependency. An increase in shear bond strength was observed when loaded at a high strain rate. This data indicates that the CMU-mortar bond exhibits a rate dependent strength change and illustrates the need for further study of the CMU-mortar interface characteristics at high strain rates.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to investigate flame behaviors near flammable limits for downstream-interacting SNG-air premixed flames in a counter-flow configuration. The SNG fuel consisted of a methane, a propane, and a hydrogen with volumetric ratios of 91, 6, and 3%, respectively. The most appropriate priority for some reliable reaction mechanisms examined was given to the mechanism of UC San diego via comparison of lean extinction limits attained numerically with experimental ones. Flame stability map was presented with a functional dependencies of lower and upper methane concentrations in terms of global strain rate. The results show that, at the global strain rate of $30s^{-1}$, lean extinction boundary is slanted while rich extinction one is relatively less inclined because of the dependency of such extinction boundary shapes on deficient reactant Lewis number governed by methane mainly. Further increase of global strain rate forces both extinction boundaries to be more slanted and to be shrunk, resulting in an island of extinction boundary and subsequently one flame extinction limit. Extinction mechanisms for lean and rich, symmetric and asymmetric extinction boundary were identified and discussed via heat losses and chemical interaction.

  • A lattice model of a typical bridge column section is analyzed, and results are presented. The lattice is built as an ensemble of line elements and masses, that can capture strain rate dependency of concrete material. The research mainly breaks up into two parts: First, a micro level analysis of the material is executed, and control parameters of the governing equations are derived by matching the results with the common macroscopic properties of concrete material. Then, the properties exhibited by the micro model, which extends the classical material properties are applied to the mesoscale model. Hence, the analysis of the target structure can be performed. In the mesoscale analysis, ramp-like impulse loads are applied at different velocity, so that the contribution of the material level rate dependency to the global behavior of the structure can be tracked.

  • A Experimental study on flame extinction behavior was investigated using He curtain flow with counter triple co-flow burner. Buoyancy force was suppressed up to a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ by using He curtain flow. The stability maps were provided with a functional dependency of diluent mole fraction and global strain rate to clarify the differences in flame extinction behavior. The flame extinction curves had C-shapes at various global strain rates. The oscillation and extinction modes were different each other in terms of the global strain rate, and the flames extinction modes could be classified into five modes such as (I) and (II): an extinction through the shrinkage of the outmost edge flame forward the flame center after self-excitation and without self-excitation, respectively, (III): an extinction through rapid advancement of a flame hole while the outmost edge flame is stationary, (IV): self-excitation occurs in the outermost edge flame and the center edge flame and then a donut shaped flame is formed and/or the flame is entirely extinguished, (V): shrinkage of the outermost edge flame without self-excitation followed by shrinkage or survival of the center flame. These oscillation and extinction modes could be identified well to the behavior of edge flame. The result also showed that the edge flame was influenced significantly by the conductive heat losses to the flame center or ambient He curtain flow.
