  • The present study is concerned with the hydrostatic extrusion process for the copper-clad aluminum rod through metallurgical joining. The rigid viscoplastic finite element analyses are performed for the steady state extrusion process of the bimetal rod. An algorithm for finding the interface profile of the bimetal rod by tracking a particle path in Eulerian domain is presented. The distributions of the effective strain rate, equivalent stress and hardness are examined for the several extrusion ratios. Experiments are also carried out for the copper-clad aluminum rod at room temperature. It is found out that the finite element predictions are generally in good agreement with the experimental observations. The detail comparisons of the extrusion loads predicted by the element method with those by experiments are given.

  • A new approach has been proposed for the incremental analysis of the nonsteady state large deformation of planar anisotropic elastic-plastic sheet forming. A mathematical brief review of a constitutive law for the incremental deformation theory has been presented from flow theory using the minimum plastic work path for elastic-plastic material. Since the material embedded coordinate system(Lagrangian quantity) is used in the proposed theory the stress integration procedure is completely objective. A new return mapping algorithm has been also developed from the general midpoint rule so as to achieve numerically large strain increment by successive control of yield function residuals. Some numerical tests for the return mapping algorithm were performed using Barlat's six component anisotropic stress potential. Performance of the proposed algorithm was shown to be good and stable for a large strain increment, For planar anisotropic sheet forming updating algorithm of planar anisotropic axes has been newly proposed. In order to show the effectiveness and validity of the present formulation earing simulation for a cylindrical cup drawing and front fender stamping analysis are performed. From the results it has been shown that the present formulation can provide a good basis for analysis for analysis of elastic-plastic sheet metal forming processes.

  • The aim of this study is an investigation of the interaction of two micro hole defects affecting fatigue crack initation life and propagation behavior. The locatio of two micro hole defects was considered as an angle of alignment and the distance between the centers of two micro hole defects. The fatigue cracking behavior is experimented under bending. When micro defects are located close to each other, the fatigue crack initiation lives are varied with their relative locations. In the experiments, the area of local plastic strain strongly played a role in the fatigue crack initiation lives. Therefore we introduce a parameter which contains the plastic deformation area at stress concentrations and propose a fatigue crack initiation life prediction curve. In addition, the directions and propagation rates of fatigue cracks initiated at two micro hole defects are studied experimentally.

  • Penetration problems in geomechanics are common. Usually the soil is heavily disturbed around the penetrating bodies and large deformations and distortions can occur. The simulation of the installation of displacement piles is a good example of the interest of these types of problems for geomechanics. In this paper the Material Point Method is used to overcome the difficulties associated with the simulations of problems involving large deformation and full displacement type penetration. Recent modifications of the Material Point Method known as Generalized Interpolation Material Point and the Convected Particle Domain Interpolation are also used and evaluated in some of the examples. Herein a footing submitted to large settlements is presented and simulated, together with the processes associated to a driven pile under undrained conditions. The displacements of the soil surrounding the pile are compared with those obtained by the Small Strain Path Method. In addition, the Modified Cam Clay model is implemented in a code of MPM and used to simulate the process of driving a pile in dry sand. Good and rather encouraging agreement is found between compared data.

  • Numerical methods are procured for evaluating the contact stresses, the dissipation of friction energy density and the fatigue cracking emanated from the contact surface under the partial slip condition. A rounded punch is used for the indenter pressing and slipping on the elastic half plane. Plane strain condition is assumed for the present analysis. Several sample calculations are carried out to investigate the effect of the punch roundness, the shear load path, and the crack obliquity and closure on the failure. It is found that the present methods can be a useful tool for studying the physical failure of the of the contacting materials such as fretting wear and fretting fatigue cracking.

  • An introduction to orthogonal cutting model by FEM is given, followed by a review of similar work. The cutting process is treated as quasi-static and strain rate insensitive, so the model is applicable only to low speed cutting operation. Chip separation is accomplished along a predefined cutting path by means of an element death procedure. Contact elements with friction capability are used to model the interaction between the tool and the workpiece. FEM results are compared with cutting experiments with low speed for brass, and good correlations are found.

  • A polishing machine adopting a new unique structural mechanism has been developed, named as a swing-arm type polishing machine. The mechanism is such that the tool path tracks on a spherical surface, of which the diameter is adjusted by setting up the machine mechanism properly. It has a strong benefit especially for polishing axis-symmetric concave mirror surfaces. The swing-arm type polishing machine with 5-axes has been designed in order to polish a concave mirror surface lip to diameter of 2 meters. The drawings are made using 3D CAD and strain-stress analysis has been done by finite element method. AC servo-motor has been used to move the swing arm and a operating software has been developed using a LapVIEW tool. Result of the test run was satisfactory which convinces the usefulness of the swing-arm type polishing machine.

  • A simple method was suggested to calculate the stress intensity factor for a one-sided patched crack with finite thickness. To consider out-of-plane bending effect resulting from the load-path eccentricity, the spring constant as a function of the through-thickness coordinate z was calculated from the stress distribution in the un-cracked plate, ${\sigma}_{yy}(y=0,\;z)$, and the displacement for the representative single strip Joint, $u_y(y=0,\;z)$. The stress Intensity factors were obtained using Rose's asymptotic solution approach and compared with the finite element results. In short crack region, two results had a little difference. However, two results were almost same in long crack region. On the other hand, the stress intensity factor using plane stress assumption was more similar to finite element result than plane strain condition.

  • In this paper, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed with single-crystal copper blocks under simple shear and simple tension to investigate the effect of size and crystal orientation. There are many variances to give influences such as deformation path, temperature, specimen size and crystal orientation. Among them, the crystal orientation has a primary influence on the volume averaged stress. The numerical results show that the volume averaged shear stress decreases as the specimen size increases and as the crystal orientation changes from single to octal. Furthermore, the Schmid factor and yield stress for crystal orientation are evaluated by using the MD simulation on the standard triangle of stereographic projection.
