  • A strainmeter goes through a period of instability immediately after installation. To determine the stability of strainmeters installed around the Andong fault zone, South Korea, an x-MR control chart analysis and a T2 control chart analysis were conducted. The x-MR control chart analysis used an empirically determined 3σ control limit line to identify abnormal data in recently installed strain gauges. In the T2 control chart analysis, the control limit line was set at a confidence of 95%. A comparison of the early stage of measurement with the terminal stage of measurement for three months after installation indicates that stabilization depends on the location and direction of each strain gauge in x-MR control chart analysis. In the T2 control chart analysis, the number of values exceeding the control limit line decreased as the terminal stage was approached. Based on these results, it is suggested that the 3σ control limit line of an x-MR control chart can be used as a standard for single gauge stability, and that the 95% confidence limit of a T2 control chart analysis could be used as the standard for the stability of multi-gauge strainmeters.

  • This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in-plane displacement. The anyalysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-planc strain analysis. But there is a controversal point, measurment error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itseif, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. In this case, it is turned out that the more errors would be occured in the large interval of fringe. so, this paper describes a computer method for drawing when the height is available only for some arbitary collection of points, the method is based on a distance-weighted, least-squares approximation technique, with the weight varying with the distance of the data points.

  • This paper introduces the hull deflection analysis method by using the direct measurements. Accordingly, this paper demonstrates how the hull deflection data is obtained by the reverse calculations using the bending moments from the stain gauge and bearing reactions from jack-up method. Where the hull deflection data provided by this research is used for the shafting alignment calculations for identical or similar vessels, shafting failures due to hull deflections can be minimized. It will also save time and expenses associated finite element method to predict hull deflections.

  • This paper focuses on the estimation of local ice loads exerted from ship-ice interaction processes. The Korean IBRV ARAON was used to perform field ice trials during her 2015 Arctic voyage. During ARAON's general ice transit, a total of 72 channels of data from both strain gauges on the inner hull plates and those installed on the transverse frames of the ARAON's bow section structures were analyzed to calculate the local ice loads. The local ice loads estimated from the analysis of the shear strain data measured on the side frames were compared to those from the hull plate pressures.

  • In spot welded joint. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) method using the Model 95 Ar laser a video system and an image processor was applied to measure the stress Unlike traditional strain gauges or Moire method, ESPI method has no special surface preparation or attachments and can be measured in-plane displacement with non-contact and real time. In this experiment, specimens are loaded in parallel with a load cell. The specimens are made of the cold rolled steel sheet with 1mm thickness, are attached strain. gauges. This study Provides an example of how ESPI has been used to measure stress and strain inspecimen. The results measured by ESPI are compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method under tensile testing.

  • In case of spot-welded joints, the fatigue cracks generally originate from the weld interfaces of the neighborhood nugget tips, and propagate toward the outer surfaces of the sheets. Generally, because fatigue crack was observed in nugget around, strain gage was attached at nugget zone. Accordingly, it was very difficult to detect the generation time of fatigue crack in spot-welded joints and to measure the propagation speed of fatigue crack. We developed the non-destructive method, according to which th fatigue crack propagation rate can be quantitatively estimated by utilizing information obtained from strain gages bonded on the electrode indentations of spot welds. The results measured by real crack were compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method in fatigue testing. And so fatigue strength was evaluated by stress intensity factor. In this study behavior of fatigue crack propagation under repeated load were considered.

  • In cold forging, the elastic behavior of the die has a direct influence on the accuracy of the forging part. And the die dimension is continuously changed during the loading, unloading, and ejecting stage. In this paper, we evaluated the elastic deflections of cold forging die during loading, unloading, and ejecting stage. Uni-axial strain gauges are used to measure elastic strain of die during each forging stage. Strain gauges are attached on the surface of die. A commercial F.E.M code, DEFORM-2D$\^$TM/ is used to predict elastic strain of die. Two method of F.E.M. analysis are used to compare with measured and calculated elastic strain. One is to regard the die as rigid body over forging cycle. And then, the die sass is analyzed by loading the die with pressure from the forging part. The other is to regard the die as elastic body from forging cycle. The elastic strain of die is calculated and the die is elastically deformed at each strop. The calculated results under the elastic die assumption are well agreed with experimental data using strain gauges.

  • The methods for the occlusal force measurement have long been developed. The occlusal analyzing equipment utilizing the pressure-sensitive film (Prescale) is useful for the assessment and comparison among large group of patients. On the other hand, the apparatus which uses the grid-based sensor sheet (T-scan) can be a useful assistant for acquiring the well-balanced occlusion. The device that can process the electrical input from the strain gauge which is attached to the tooth surface can collect the dynamic data of actual masticatory force. This device has been developed for the measurement of actual mastication with the food bolus and it can be a useful method for the comparison before and after the restorative treatment. Occlusal force measurement can be applied for the analysis of therapeutic action, diagnosis of crack- tooth syndrome, temporomandibul ar disease, and idiopathic implant loosening.

  • This paper aims at estimating instantaneous prestress losses by measuring the actual prestress forces in prestressed concrete (PSC) box girder bridges. Measurement were taken to study initial prestress losses such as friction losses and slip losses. A new strain gauge system was developed to measure strains in internal tendons. The system was installed on a total of 20 tendons in a PSC box girder bridges. The variation of prestress forces were monitored during prestressing tendon and after prestress transfer. The prestress losses are also calculated including friction losses and slip losses. The measured data were compared with the theoretical values. The result shows that the measured prestress forces agree well with the theoretical values. It is shown that prestress force of each strand in the same tendon is a bit different. This study also shows that prestress losses of continuity tendons during prestress transfer are significantly different each other, which results from the variety of buttress location and tendon profile. The present study provides realistic information on the estimation of actual prestress forces and losses in PSC box girder bridges.

  • This paper presents a 3D touch pad technology that uses force touch sensors as a next-generation method for mobile applications. 3D touch technology requires detecting the location and pressure of touches simultaneously, as well as multi-touch function. We used metal foil strain gauges for the touch recognition sensor and detected the weak touch signals using Wheatstone bridge circuit at each strain gauge sensor. We also developed a touch recognition system that amplifies touch signals, converts them to digital data through a microprocessor, and displays the data on a screen. In software, we designed a touch recognition algorithm with C code, which is capable of recognizing two-point touch and differentiating touch pressures. We carried out a successful experiment to display two touch signals on a screen with different forces and locations.
