  • In this paper, edge delaminations in cracked composite plates are analytically investigated. A theoretical model based upon a sub-laminate approach is used to determine the strain energy release rate, $G^{ed}$, in [$\pm$$\theta_m$/$90_n$]$_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates loaded in tension. The analysis provides closed-form expressions for the reduced stiffness due to edge delamination and matrix cracking and the total energy release rate. The parameters controlling the laminate behaviour are identified. It is shown that the available energy for edge delamination is increased notably due to transverse ply cracking. Also thermal stresses increase substantially the strain energy release rate and this effect is magnified by the presence of matrix cracking. Prediction for the edge delamination onset strain is presented and compared with experimental data. The analysis could be applied to ceramic matrix composite laminates where similar mechanisms develop, but further experimental evidence is required.

  • The present paper is concerned with a delamination analysis of a multilayered frame structure that exhibits non-linear creep behavior. A solution to the strain energy release rate is obtained by considering the time-dependent complementary strain energy in the frame. The mechanical behavior of the frame is treated by using a non-linear stress-strain-time relationship. The time-dependent solution to the strain energy release rate obtained in the present paper holds for a multilayered frame made of arbitrary number of adhesively bonded layers of different thicknesses and material properties. Besides, the dealamination is located arbitrary along the thickness. The solution to the strain energy release rate is verifiedby applying the J-integral approach. A parametric study of the strain energy release rate is carried-out. Two three-layered frame configurations are analyzed in order to evaluate the influence of the delamination crack location along the thickness on the strain energy release rate. The strain energy release is analyzed also for the case when a notch is cut-out in the inner delamination crack arm. The results obtained are compared with these for a frame without a notch.

  • This paper considers a delamination analysis of a statically undetermined inhomogeneous beam structure of rectangular section with viscoelastic behavior under torsion. The beam is built in at its two ends. The beam has two longitudinal inhomogeneous layers with a delamination crack between them. A notch is made in the upper crack arm. The external torsion moment applied on the beam is a function of time. Under these conditions, the beam has one degree of indeterminacy. In order to derive the strain energy release rate, first, the static indeterminacy is resolved. Then the strain energy release rate is obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy with considering the viscoelastic behavior. The strain energy release rate is found also by analyzing the compliance of the beam for checkup. Solution of the strain energy release rate in a beam without a notch in the upper crack arm is derived too. In this case, the beam has two degrees of static indeterminacy (the torsion moment in the upper crack arm is treated as an additional internal redundant unknown). A parametric investigation of the strain energy release rate is carried-out.

  • Global postbuckling analysis is accomplished for one-dimensional and two-dimensional delaminations. A new finite element model, which can be used to model the global postbuckling analysis of one-dimensional and two-dimensional delaminations, is presented. In order to calculate the strain energy release rate, geometrically nonlinear analysis is accomplished, and the incremental crack closure technique is introduced. To check the effectiveness of the finite element models and the incremental crack closure technique, the simplified closed-form sloution for a through-the-width delamination with plane strain condition is derived and compared with the finite element result. The finite element results show good agreement with the closed-foul1 solutions. The present method was extended to calculate the strain energy release rate for two-dimensional delamination. For a symmetric circular delamination, the strain energy release rate shows great variation along the delamination front. and the delamination growth appears to occur perpendicular to the loading direction.

  • In this paper, fracture analysis of a continuously inhomogeneous arch structure with two longitudinal cracks is developed in terms of the time-dependent strain energy release rate. The arch under consideration exhibits non-linear creep behavior. The cross-section of the arch is a rectangle. The material is continuously inhomogeneous along the thickness of the cross-section. The arch is loaded by two bending moments applied at its end sections. The mechanical behavior of the material is described by using a non-linear stress-strain-time relationship. The two longitudinal cracks are located symmetrically with respect to the mid-span of the arch. Due to the symmetry, only half of the arch is considered. Time-dependent solutions to strain energy release rate are obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy. For verification, time-dependent solutions to the strain energy release rate are derived also by considering the time-dependent complementary strain energy. The evolution of the strain energy release rate with the time is analyzed. The effects of material inhomogeneity, locations of the two cracks along the thickness of the arch and the magnitude of the external loading on the time-dependent strain energy release rate are evaluated.

  • When an impact stress is applied on the external boundary of double cantilever beam of orthotropic material which crack length is greater than specimen hight and anistropic ratio is very high, dyna mic energy release rate is derived, and the relationship between dynamic energy release rate and crack propagating velocity is studied. Dynamic energy release rate to static energy release rate is decreased with increasment of crack propagating velocity. The relationships between dynamic energy release rate and vertical strain have a similar pattern with those between static energy release rate and vertical strain. When normalized time(Cstla) is greater than or equal to 2, dynamic energy release rate approaches to a constant value.

  • DCB(pure mode I) and CLS(mixed mode) tests were performed to investigate the effect of fracture mode on the interlaminar fracture of composite laminate. Mode I critical strain energy release rate was found to be $133J/m^2$ from the DCB test and total strain energy release rate decreased from $1, 270J/m^2$ as thickness ratio(tl/t) varied from 0.333 to 0.667 from the crease from the CLS test. Crack length had no effect on the total strain energy release rate and load was almost constant during the crack growth of the specimen which had the specific thickness ratio. Crack initiated when the stress of the strap ply reached constant stress $42kgf/mm^2$ which was found to be independent of the thickness ratio.

  • This paper is focused on delamination analysis of a multilayered inhomogeneous viscoelastic beam subjected to linear creep under constant applied stress. The viscoelastic model that is used to treat the creep consists of consecutively connected units. Each unit consists of one spring and two dashpots. The number of units in the model is arbitrary. The modulus of elasticity of the spring in each unit changes with time. Besides, the modulii of elasticity and the coefficients of viscosity change continuously along the thickness, width and length in each layer since the material is continuously inhomogeneous in each layer of the beam. A time-dependent solution to the strain energy release rate for the delamination is derived. A time-dependent solution to the J-integral is derived too. A parametric analysis of the strain energy release rate is carried-out by applying the solution derived. The influence of various factors such as creep, material inhomogeneity, the change of the modulii of elasticity with time and the number of units in the viscoelastic model on the strain energy release rate are clarified.

  • Modified singular fracture process zone(S-FPZ) model is proposed in this paper to determine a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The investigated fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and the relationship between crack closure stress(CCS) and crack opening displacement(COD) in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the actual fracture energy of experimental results fairly well. The results of the experimental data analysis show that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. However, the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. The strain energy release rate remained constantly at the minimum value up to the crack extension of 25 mm, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for specimens of large size. The fracture criterion remained at the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localization. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing behavior of concrete.

  • The present paper is focused on analyzing the delamination of inhomogeneous multilayered rods of circular cross-section loaded in torsion. The rods are made of concentric longitudinal layers of individual thickness and material properties. A delamination crack is located arbitrary between layers. Thus, the internal and external crack arms have circular and ring-shaped cross-sections, respectively. The layers exhibit continuous material inhomogeneity in radial direction. Besides, the material has non-linear elastic behavior. The delamination is analyzed in terms of the strain energy release rate. General solution to the strain energy release rate is derived by considering the energy balance. The solution is applied to analyze the delamination of cantilever rod. For verification, the strain energy release rate is derived also by considering the complementary strain energy.
