  • The purpose of this study is to develop the curve fitted equations for practicality and actual calculation during seismic performance evaluation of buried pipelines. Curve fitting for strain curve according to the wavelength of the seismic wave was produced using the non-linear least square method and the equations with the best results was suggested. In addition, a degree and coefficient of polynomial fitting equation needed to use curve fitted equation were identified. Interpreting process during the test of resistance of earthquake of buried pipelines with various end boundary conditions were provided through example questions. The results of this study were used to conduct a dynamic response analysis and a seismic performance evaluation of concrete, steel, and FRP pipes with various end boundary conditions.

  • This study was conducted in order to determine the optimum conditions for the production of fermented grapefruit extract showing high cell growth, antioxidant activity and total flavonoid content. Five lactic acid bacterial strains - Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC3104, Lactobacillus brevis KCTC3102, Weisella cibaria KCTC3746, Leuconostoc citreum KCTC3526 and Leuconostoc mesenteroides KCTC3505 - were evaluated first in order to determine the optimum strain able to grow with high efficiency on grapefruit as a substrate and possesses higher antioxidant activity and flavonoids content. Among these strains, L. mesenteroides KCTC3505 was selected as a starter culture. To estimate the available or effective content of grapefruit in basal medium, the effects of 30%, 50%, and 70% grapefruit contents on the performance of fermentation were tested, and it was found that grapefruit can be added at 70% levels to medium. In this study, three factors of fermentation conditions - incubation time, sucrose, and glucose contents - were evaluated for their effects on fermentation performance. Taguchi experiment design was employed and the responses of experiments were calculated using signal and noise ratio calculation with larger-the-best characteristics. Finally, the optimum conditions for the manufacture of fermented grapefruit extract were as follows: grapefruit 70%, sucrose 10 g/L, glucose 10 g/L, sodium acetate 1 g/L, NaCl 1 g/L, dipotassium phosphate 0.1 g/L, magnesium sulfate 0.01 g/L and 16 hr of incubation.

  • In this research mass of a plane strain two dimensional elastic concrete dam under gravitational and hydrostatic loads is minimized, through shape optimization of the dam cross section. Cross sectional area of the dam is taken as cost function of the optimization problem while constraints on the principal stress distribution and dam thickness are imposed. Shape of the boundary of the model is chosen as design variable. Variational formulation of the optimization problem, the material derivative idea of continuum mechanics, and an adjoint variable method are employed for the shape design sensitivity calculation. Then the gradient projection algorithm is utilized to obtain an optimum design iteratively. Research results fully demonstrate that the theory and procedure adopted are quite efficient and can be applicable to a wide class of practical elastic structural design problems.

  • In this study, the variations of microstructures and tensile properties of Ti-(44-54)at.%Al binary alloys were investigated. The heat-treated microstructure depended greatly on their solidification structure and annealing temperature. We measured the variations of volume fractions of primary and secondary lamellar structure as a function of the heat treatment temperature in a Ti-47at.%Al alloy. The variation of ductility as a function of Al content was in good agreement with the change of fracture mode in the tensile fracture surface. It can be inferred that the variations of yield stress and hardness of ${\gamma}$ phase in a single ${\gamma}$-phase field region are enhanced by anti-site defects created by deviations from the stoichiometric composition. In a Ti-47at.%Al alloy within the (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) two-phase field, the yield stress tended to be the maximum at a near equal volume fraction of lamellar and ${\gamma}$ grains. The ductility depended sensitively on the overall grain size and Al content. The calculation of fracture strain using Chan's model indicated that the change of ductility as a function of annealing temperature was primarily determined by the variations in the overall grain size and lamellar volume fraction.

  • The investigation, which includes the material homogenization and the calculation of local stress concentration of long-fibrous composites in a microscopic level, has been performed to analyze the behavior of fiber-reinforced composites by using finite element method. In order to carry out this study, the finite element models of composites have been generated by the idealized arrays as square and hexagonal-packed type. In the FE analysis, the boundary conditions of micromechanical finite element method(MFEM) have been defined and verified by comparing with the results from multi-cells, and the effective material properties of composites composed of graphite/epoxy have been also evaluated by rules of mixture. For acquiring the relation between the global and local behaviors of composites, the magnifications of strain, stress, and interfacial stress of composites subjected to a longitudinal and transverse loading respectively have been calculated. And the magnifications have been proposed as the stress concentration in the microscopic level at composite material.

  • Durability of rubber dust cover in the ball joint for automotive suspension parts were analyzed by FEM and compared with experimental data. Upper open area of ball joint is sealed by dust cover for preventing outflow of the lubricating oil and intrusion of send, dust, water, etc. This rubber cover undergoes repeated loadings such as tension and compression while the car is running. Analysis about rubber material needs to consider every kinds of nonlinearities arise in finite element analysis, which are geometric nonlinearity due to large displacement and small strain, materially nonlinearity and nonlinear boundary condition such as contact. So in the study, the deformation behavior of dust cover was analysed by using the commercial finite element program MARC. This program could solve these kinds of nonlinear analysis accurately. Finite element model of dust cover is considered as 3-dimensional half model based on 2-dimensional axisymmetric model. Material property of rubber was modeled by Ogden model and input data for calculation takes form uniaxial tension test of rubber specimen, The final object of the study is obtaining the design specification of dust covers and the result of analysis should be a useful data to design of rubber

  • A rational and straightforward method is introduced for developing continuum models of large platelike periodic lattice structures based on energy equivalence. The procedure for developing continuum plate models involves the use of existing well-defined finite element matrices for the easy calculation of strain and kinetic energies of a repeating cell, from which the reduced stiffness and mass matrices are obtained in terms of continuum degrees- of-freedom defined in this paper. The equivalent continuum plate properties are obtained from the direct comparison of the reduced matrices for continuum plate with those for lattice plate. The advantages of the present continuum method are that it may be applied to arbitrary lattice configurations and may give most diverse equivalent continuum plate properties including all kinds of coupling, while other methods may give only limited structural properties. To evaluate the continuum method developed in this paper, free vibration analyses for both of continuum and lattice plates are conducted. Numerical results show that the present continuum method gives very reliable structural and dynamic properties compared to other well-recognized methods.

  • Escherichia cole NZN111, which is known as a pfl ldhA double mutant strin, was metabolically engineered to produce succinic acid by overexpressing malic enzyme into the E. coli controlled by a trc promoter. Fermentation studies were carried out in a LB medium by first growing cells aerobically to an $OD_{600}$ of 5. At this point, 0.01 mM IPTG was added to induce the overexpression of malic enzyme and the agitation speed was gradually lowered. When the culture $OD_{600}$ reached 11, a complete anaerobic condition was achieved by flushing with a $CO_3-H_2$ gas mixture. When NZN111(pTrcML) was cultured at $37^{\circ}C$, the final succinic acid concentration of 2.8 g/l could be obtained after 30 h of anaerobic cultivation. The fermentation results were analyzed by the calculation of metabolic fluxes. Metaolic flux analysis showed that about 85% of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) was converted to pyruvate, and further converted to malic acid by malic enzyme.

  • In this paper, W-DCAP-HTR(Web-based Design Compatibility Assessment Program for High Temperature Reactor) which will be used to check the design criteria for high temperature reactor is newly proposed. To do this, the assessment procedure of the ASME Sec.III Div.5 such as time-dependent primary stress limit, accumulated inelastic strain, and creep-fatigue damage evaluation were investigated. Furthermore, the trend of candidate materials for high temperature reactor was also reviewed. Then, all assessment procedures for high temperature reactor have been computerized to enhance the efficiency and to reduce the possibility of human error during calculating procedure by hand calculation. It can be directly conducted by adopting the actual thermal and structural analysis results. The validation of W-DCAP-HTR has been demonstrated by benchmark analysis.

  • The study of the tensile strength of composite materials is far more complex than analysis of the properties of elasticity and plasticity. Indeed, during mechanical loading, micro-cracks in the matrix, the fibers break, debonding of the interfaces are created. The failure process of composites is of great diversity and cannot be described if even we know: the strength criterion of each individual component, the state of stress and strain in the material, the propagation phenomena cracks in the structure and nature of the interface between the matrix and the reinforcement. This information is only partially known and the obtained by the analysis of a stress limit beyond which there is destruction of the material is almost impossible. To partially process the issue, a solution lies in a mesoscopic approach of seeking a law to locate the ultimate strength of the material for a plane stress state. Tests on rectangular plates in bending PEEK/APC2 and T300/914 three were made and this in order to validate our approach, the calculation has been implemented in a nonlinear finite element code (Castem 2000), in order to make comparison with the numerical results. The results show good agreement between numerical simulation and the two materials; however, it would be interesting to consider other phenomena in the criterion.
