Waterway design should prioritize appropriate channel width to ensure preferential safe passage for the arrival and departure of vessels. To calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage a comprehensive review of several factors is required. These factors include vessel maneuverability, determined by vessel size, type and speed; environmental factors such as wind, tide, and wave action; human factors, including personal experience and operator judgment as well as marine traffic and navigation support facilities for decision making. However, the Korean channel width design standard is based only on vessel length, and requires improvement when compared with the standards of PIANC, USA, and Japan. This study aims to estimate the appropriate channel width required for one-way traffic in a straight channel, considering various vessel and environmental factors, using Fast Time Simulation (FTS). When the wind speed is 25 knots, with a current speed of 2 knots and a normal vessel speed of 10 knots FTS shows that a 150K GT Cruise Ship requires a minimum channel width of 0.67-0.91 the vessel length (L), whereas a 120K TEU Container Ship and a 300K DWT VLCC require 0.79-1.17 and 1.02-1.59, respectively. Such results can be used to calculate the minimum channel width required for safe passage as an improved Korean design standard.

An investigation of ribbed divergent channel was undertaken to determine the effect of rib pitch to height ratio on total friction factor and heat transfer results in the fully developed regime. The ribbed divergent rectangular channel with the channel exit hydraulic diameter ($D_{ho}$) to inlet channel hydraulic diameter ($D_{hi}$) ratio of 1.16 with wall inclination angle of 0.72 deg, at which the ratios (p/e) of 6,10, and 14 are considered. The ribbed straight channel of $D_{ho}/D_{hi}=1.0$ were also used. The ribbed divergent wall is manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and the ratio of rib spacing (p) to height 6, 10, and 14. The measurement was run with range of Reynolds numbers from 24,000 to 84,000. The comparison shows that the ratio of p/e=6 has the greatest thermal performance in the divergent channel under two constraints; identical mass flow rate and identical pressure drop.
In this study, the two-phase incompressible flow in two-dimensional channel considering the effect of surface tension is simulated using an improved level-set method. Quadratic element is used for solving the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations to avoid using an additional pressure equation, and Crank-Nicholson scheme and linear element are used for solving the advection equation of the level set function. Direct approach method using geometric information is implemented instead of the hyperbolic-type partial differential equation for the reinitializing the level set function. The benchmark test case considers various arrays of defomable droplets under different flow conditions in straight channel. The deformation and migration of the droplets are computed and the results are compared very well with the existing studies.

In this study, an injection mold with conformal cooling channels was designed and manufactured for use in the production of a thick plastic cosmetic container that required high gloss surfaces. A cooling analysis verified the design of the conformal cooling channel for the cosmetic container, and also showed that the cooling efficiency was superior to that of the straight cooling channel. Slide cores designed with the conformal cooling channel were manufactured using the Layers Parting method and vacuum diffusion bonding. Subsequent test injection and quality inspection showed no problem in the appearance and dimensional accuracy of the produced product. The cycle time for product production was about 110 seconds, sufficient for mass production.
Experiments were conducted in an initially straight laboratory alluvial channel to investigate channel meandering characteristics. The experimental observations revealed an empirical relation between three types of tortuosity ratios used for describing meandering characteristics. Furthermore, the Strauhal number was found to be higher for bed material with greater resistance to erosion than with lower resistance to erosion. The meandering characteristics were also investigated using the concept of buckling employed in solid mechanics and the concept of siphoning of fluid mechanics. The buckling of flow, attributable to the flow nonuniformity across the channel cross-section, was found to follow the same pattern as did meandering observed experimentally. The processes of expansion of meanders and cut-off can be explained using the concept of siphoning. The results of expanding meander planforms observed in four experimental tests supported the viability of these concepts.

Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are widely used with an increasing demand for industrial applications. PCHEs are capable of operating at high temperatures and pressure. We consider a PCHE as a candidate intermediate heat exchanger type for a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). For conventional application using stainless steels, design and manufacturing of PCHEs are well established. For applications to HTGR, knowledge of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel is required to estimate design margin. This paper analyzes the effects of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel on thermal performance using a code internally developed for design and analysis of PCHEs. The code has a capability of two dimensional simulations. Longitudinal conduction is estimated using the code. In HTGR operating condition, about ten percent of design margin is required to compensate thermal performance. The cross-sectional images of PCHE channels are obtained using an optical microscope. The images are processed with computer image process technique. We quantify the deformation of channel with dimensional parameters. It is found that the deformation has negative effect on structural integrity. The deformation enhances thermal performance when the shape of channel is straight in laminar flow regime. It reduces thermal performance in cases of a zigzag channel and turbulent flow regime.

Experimental investigations of the heat transfer and friction factors in the ribbed divergent rectangular channel with the channel exit hydraulic diameter to inlet hydraulic diameter ratio of 1.16 were performed. The surface heaters were mounted onto the two opposite walls. The main experimental parameter is the ratio of rib pitch (p) to height (e), at which the ratios (p/e) of 6, 10, and 14 are considered in the channel with ribs on one wall only. The straight ribbed square channel is also considered as a comparison. The major findings are that the ratio of p/e = 6 shows the highest values in the heat transfer and the ratio of p/e = 10 indicates the greatest friction factor in the ribbed divergent channel. Editor's note:No major changes or corrections needed. Well written.
Formability is requested to successfully develop of a metal bipolar plate for mass production. From this point of view, wider channel and land width is more helpful to improve formability. But the performance of the fuel cell can be affected by its channel and land shape. So it is very important to select proper channel and land shape not to deteriorate the fuel cell performance. In this work, 3-dimensional, non-isothermal numerical simulation was performed to analyse the effects of channel and land width on the fuel cell performance. 3 types of straight channel were selected for the numerical simulation. The simulation results reveal that wide channel and land width lower fuel cell performance and decrease voltage at a high current density region. Water activity, temperature, oxygen concentration distributions were investigated to find the reasons of performance degradation. The results show that wide channel and land width give an bad effect on fuel cell performance because of low cool ins efficiency and lack of oxygen gas under the land.

Traditional channel models for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication usually assume fixed velocity in static scattering environment. In the realistic scenarios, however, time-variant velocity for V2V results in non-stationary statistical properties of wireless channels. Dynamic scatterers with random velocities and directions have been always utilized to depict the non-stationary statistical properties of the channel. In this paper, a non-stationary geometry-based cooperative scattering channel model is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) V2V communication systems, where a birth-death process is used to capture the appearance and disappearance dynamic properties of moving scatterers that reflect the time-variant time correlation and Doppler spectrum characteristics. Moreover, our model has more straight and concise to study the impact of the vehicular traffic density on channel characteristics and thus avoid complicated procedure in deriving the analytical expressions of the channel parameters and functions. The numerical results validate our analysis and demonstrate that setting important parameters of our model can appropriately build up more purposeful measurement campaigns in the future.
Inertial microfluidics has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its superior benefits of high throughput, precise control, simplicity, and low cost. Many inertial microfluidic applications have been demonstrated for physiological sample processing, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring and cleanup. In this review, we discuss the fundamental mechanisms and principles of inertial migration and Dean flow, which are the basis of inertial microfluidics, and provide basic scaling laws for designing the inertial microfluidic devices. This will allow end-users with diverse backgrounds to more easily take advantage of the inertial microfluidic technologies in a wide range of applications. A variety of recent applications are also classified according to the structure of the microchannel: straight channels and curved channels. Finally, several future perspectives of employing fluid inertia in microfluidic-based cell sorting are discussed. Inertial microfluidics is still expected to be promising in the near future with more novel designs using various shapes of cross section, sheath flows with different viscosities, or technologies that target micron and submicron bioparticles.
