  • In this paper, a rectangular waveguide probe with a ridge-loaded straight slot (RLSS) is presented for a near-field scanning microwave microscope (NSMM). The RLSS is located laterally at the end wall of the cavity and is loaded on double ridges in a narrow straight slot to improve the spatial resolution compared with a straight slot. The probe consists of a rectangular cavity with an RLSS and a feed section of a WR-90 rectangular waveguide. When the proposed NSMM is located at distance of 0.1mm in front of a substrate without patches or strips, the simulated full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the probe improve by approximately 31.5 % compared with that of a straight slot without ridges. One dimensional scanning of the E-plane on a sample under test was conducted, and the reflection coefficient of the near-field scanning probe is presented.

  • In this study, straight slot welding was carried out using a 316L stainless steel test block, and numerical simulation of the slot weld process was performed using finite element analysis. Data on the residual stress were obtained at equally spaced points on the top surface of the test block along directions parallel and perpendicular to the welding direction. After electrolytic polishing of the top surface of the block, the residual stress was measured by the X-ray diffraction method. The calculated weld residual stresses were compared with the measured data, and they were in good agreement with the data. The weld residual stress distribution inside the plate was determined from the results of finite element analysis, and the characteristics of the distribution were discussed in detail in this paper.

  • A numerical study has been performed for the 2-dimensional film cooling employed in the cooling of hot components such as gas turbines. The flow and heat transfer characteristics are numerically simulated using FLUENT software. Blowing ratios vary from 0.25 to 5.0 and coolant injection angles vary from $15^{\circ}\;to\;60^{\circ}\;in\;15^{\circ}$ increment. The result shows that, for all cases, there exists a blowing ratio which maximizes film cooling effect (measured by the distance from the slot exit to the downstream wall location at which temperature increases to 900 K) for a given injection angle. It is also observed that the film cooling effectiveness decreases when downstream wall is sunk or lifted. The simulation has been performed using both constant properties and temperature dependent variable properties. It is found that the cases with constant properties overestimate the film cooling effect considerably.

  • In this paper, a non-offset longitudinal shunt slot excited by an asymmetry compound iris on the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide is presented as an element for a waveguide slot-array antenna(WSAA). By properly adjusting the iris dimension, a resonance of the slot at a desired frequency can be achieved. The proposed resonant slot has some advantageous properties, such as a wide range of normalized resonant conductance, and minimum change of phase in the waveguide at the resonance. In addition, when the slots are arrayed for a waveguide slot antenna, the unwanted cross-polarization level can be reduced because each slot is placed in a straight line. A $8{\times}1$ WSAA with -20 dB side-lobe level(SLL) is designed, fabricated, and tested experimentally. The measured results are well agreed with the simulated ones and have an SLL of -18.13 dB and a cross-polarization level of -48.85 dB at 9.41 GHz, which was improved by about 15 dB of that of the conventional longitudinal slot array antenna.

  • In this paper, a design method for a compact slot antenna for 5.8 GHz RFID band (5.725-5.875 GHz) is studied. The proposed slot antenna is size-reduced by bending both ends of the straight slot in "${\Gamma}$"-shape, and a rectangular feed patch is located inside the slot. The effects of slot length, location of feed patch, and width and length of feed patch on the antenna performance are examined. A prototype antenna with optimized parameters for 5.8 GHz band is fabricated on an FR4 substrate and tested experimentally. The experimental results show that the frequency band for a VSWR < 3 ranges 5.72-6.13 GHz (bandwidth 410 MHz), and it corresponds fairly well with the simulated band 5.64-5.97 GHz (bandwidth 330 MHz). The fabricated antenna shows good radiation performance such as maximum power density in both directions normal to the slot plane, and low cross-polarization level of < -20 dB.

The proposed slot antenna is size-reduced by bending both ends of the straight slot in "I"-shape, and a rectangular feed patch is located inside the slot. The effects of slot length, location of feed patch, and width and length of feed patch on the antenna performance are examined. • In this paper, a method is presented for the design of an orthomode transducer(OMT) operating at 21/31GHz frequency bands. A square waveguide is used in the common port while the WR-34 standard rectangular waveguide is used in the straight port. The straight port is connected to the common port via a multi-stage quarter-wave impedance transformer. The side port is coupled to the common port through a slot formed along the center line of the common square waveguide. An impedance transformer is employed to match the impedance of the coupling slot with that of the WR-51 waveguide at the output of the side port. Dimensions of the OMT are iteratively optimized employing the theory of waveguide. The validity of the proposed method is verified by fabricating and testing the designed orthomode transducer.

  • A seedling pick-up device for vegetable transplanters was developed and its work performance was evaluated at the laboratory. The pick-up device extracts seedlings from a 200-cell tray of seedlings and transfers them to the place where they are to be transplanted into the soil. The device consists of a path generator, pick-up pins and a pin driver. The path generator is a five-bar mechanism comprised of a fixed link, a driving link, a driven link, a connecting link and a slider. The slider is constrained to move along the driven link and a fixed slot of combined straight-line and circular paths. The connecting link joins the driving link and the slider. When the slider moves along the straight-line path of the slot it takes seedlings out from the cell and transfers them to the transplanting hopper when moving along the circular path. A proto-type of the pick-up device was built and tested under the various operational conditions such as age of seedling, approach direction and penetration depth of pins to the cell, holding method of seedling and extracting velocity. The device extracted 30 seedlings per minute with the maximum success ratio of 97% using the seedlings of 23 days old. Some design details were also discussed and suggested to enhance the performance of the device.

  • The writings frame and various rules based on discourse structure and knowledge-based methods were applied to construct the automatic Ext/sums (extracts & summaries) system from the straight news in web. The frame contains the slot and facet represented by the role of paragraphs, sentences , and clauses in news and the rules determining the type of slot. Rearrangement like Unification, separation, and synthesis of the candidate sentences to summary, maintaining the coherence of meanings, was carried out by using the rules derived from similar degree measurement, syntactic information, discourse structure, and knowledge-based methods and the context plots defined with the syntactic/semantic signature of noun and verb and category of verb suffix. The critic sentence were tried to insert into summary.

  • Purpose: For aesthetic reasons, composite resin brackets are widely used. However, related studies are rare. This pilot study sought to compare the stress distributions in two commercially available composite resin brackets with metal slot. Materials and Methods: Two commercially available resin brackets -- full-metal slot resin bracket (fSRB) and partial-metal slot resin bracket (pSRB) with straight wire appliance dimension of $0.022{\times}0.028$ in -- were selected. In each bracket, 3-dimensional finite element models were constructed, and stress level was evaluated using finite element analysis. By loading the tipping force and torsion moment, which are similar to those applied by the stainless steel rectangular wire ($0.019{\times}0.025$ -in), stress distributions were calculated, and von Mises stress values were obtained. Results: In pSRB and fSRB, the stress value of the torque moment was much higher than that of the tipping force. The pSRB showed higher stress value than fSRB in both tipping force and torque moment because of the difference in size and configuration of the metal frame inserted into the slot. More stress was also found to be concentrated on the slot area than the wing area in fSRB. Conclusion: The slot form of fSRB was found to be more resistant to the stress of tipping and torque than the slot form of pSRB. In addition, the slot areas -- rather than the wing areas -- of the bracket showed breakage susceptibility. Therefore, resistance to the torque moment on the slot area should be considered in bracket design.
