This article describes the load capability of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate in association with the stored elastic energy induced by an increased dome height after a curing process. The stored elastic energy within the actuators is obtained via a flexural mechanical bending test. The load capability is evaluated indirectly in terms of an actuating displacement with a load of mass at simply supported and fixed-free boundary conditions. Additionally, a free displacement under no load of mass is measured for a comparison with an actuating displacement. The results reveal that an actuator with a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators in terms of free displacement as well as actuating displacement due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at AC voltage, the actuating displacement is rather higher than the free displacement for the same actuating conditions. In addition, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling the performance.
This study presents the static and dynamic actuating performances of a bending piezoelectric actuator with a thin sandwiched PZT plate under a static load. The stored elastic energy within the actuators which occurs during a curing process is obtained through a flexural bending test. An actuating performance is evaluated in terms of an actuating displacement at the simply supported condition. The results reveal that an actuator that consists of a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at the alternating current voltage, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling their performances.
The stored elastic strain energy due to the thermal expansion mismatch between the thermally oxidized crystalline layer (cristobalite) and CVD Si3N4($\alpha$-Si3N4) on cooling form high oxidation temperature (1000-140$0^{\circ}C$) to room temperature, releases through the crazing of film and lifting at the SiO2/Si3N4 interface. The ratial equation (1/n) which corresponds to the ratio of the relaxation of the stored elastic stain energy due to crazing of film to the total energy, is derived under the assumption of the square crazed pattern, as follow. 1/n={8${\gamma}$(1-v)2}/(ΔL2dE) The ratial equation suggests the reason for the lifting at the SiO2/Si3N4 interface which was observed in this research.
The evolved energy concept has been demonstrated to fir the seismic evaluation of various steel connection details with the objective basis. For this, the strain energy stored in the structural system obtained from the experimental database has been normalized by that of a benchmark system. In this notion, the ideal elastic-perfectly plastic structural system has been assumed as a benchmark. In addition, the attempt shows that those previously peformed experimental database can be recycled to have further significance.

One aspect of the stiction problem may be explained by the action of capillary forces in conjunction with surface elasticity. In the present work, the interaction between two elastic half-spaces separated by a small liquid bridge is investigated. By minimizing the total free energy stored in the interface (including elastic energy and surface energy), the equilibrium interface geometry is determined analytically in the case where there is no solid-solid contact. A non-dimensional number, $N_c=299\frac{{\gamma}^2_{LA}cos^2{\theta}V_o}{E^{'2}H^5}$ is found to govern the structure stability. When $N_c{\ge}1$, the two surfaces jump into solid-solid contact and, once this occurs, the contact area will continue to expand until the two surfaces are in full contact.
Recently, several studies have been conducted to lower the cost of transport of human by adding external joint stiffness elements. However, it has not been clearly elucidated whether adaptation time is required for human subjects to adapt to the added external joint stiffness. In this study, carbon plates in the form of shoe midsoles were added to the metatarsophalangeal joint, and the lower limb joint torque and mechanical energy consumption were compared before and after a total of 5 sessions (2.5 weeks) of running. A total of 11 young healthy participants exhibited higher elastic energy storage in carbon plates in the fifth session compared to the first session, and lower power in the ankle joint. This suggests that a single training session may be insufficient to validate the efficiency effect of added joint stiffness, and the human body seems to increase the elastic energy stored in the assistive joint stiffness and its reutilization.
Equation of equilibrium is derived and solved for an infinite isotropic solid under applied hydrostatic stress which is uniform at large distance, and disturbed by a spherical precipitate which has isotropoc elastic constants dirrerent form those of the matrix. A linear strain hardening behavior of the matrix is assumed, and an elasto-plastic sloution is obtained. The difference of the total strain energy stored inthe infinite solid with and without a precipitate is computed, and compared with that for purely elastic case. Finally the effect of the ratio of the bulk modulus of the precipitate to that of the matrix and the effct of linear strain hardening rate on the plastic zone size and the energy difference are discussed.

In nature, many small insects are using jumping as a survival strategy. Among them, fleas jump in a unique method. They use an elastomer, 'Resilin', an extensor muscle and a trigger muscle. By contracting the extensor muscle, the elastic energy, that makes a flea to jump, is stored in the resilin. After storing energy, the trigger muscle begins contracting and pulling the extensor muscle. When the extensor muscle crosses the rotational joint, direction of torque generated from the extensor muscle reverses, 'torque reversal mechanism'. Simultaneously, the elastic energy stored in the resilin releases rapidly and is converted into the kinetic energy. It makes a flea to jump 150 times its body length. In this paper, miniaturized jumping robot using flea-inspired catapult mechanism is presented. This mechanism is based on the 4-bar linkage and the reversal joint and is actuated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) coiled springs describing the flea's muscle. The robot prototype is fabricated by SCM process using glass fiber prepregs and a sheet of polyimide film. The prototype is 20mm link length, 34mm width and 2.0g weight and can jump 103cm.
The resilient mounts of a diesel engine installed onboard a ship should be designed for both static and dynamic loads. If possible, the resonance frequencies of the six rigid body modes of the installation and the flexible modes of the engine support structure should not lie within the engine operation range. In this paper a design criterion is proposed to evaluate an isolation system which involves the summation of dynamic forces transmitted through the resilient mounts and elastic potential energy index stored in the mounts. A case study is also presented in which a diesel engine generator, which had an elastic foundation and was mounted in a 5500 TEU container vessel, was studied both theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis of the test model was performed by using a single mass 6 degree of freedom system. Actual measurements of mechanical vibration of the Engine and its foundation onboard were carried out, which showed the importance of including the flexibility of the engine support structure in the mode
