  • Caking has been a serious problem in food, feed, pharmaceutical, and related industries, where dry powdered materials are produced and/or utilized. Caking of dry food powders occurs when water is redistributed or absorbed by the powders during processing and storage. The powders become sticky when their surfaces are mobilized by water, resulting in inter-particle binding, formation of clusters, and inter-particle fusion, which lead to caking. As a result of caking, the solubility of the powdered materials may decrease, lipid oxidation and enzymatic activity may increase, and sensory qualities such as flavor and crispness may deteriorate. Caking may also lead to microbial growth. For consumers, caking of powder products is a sign of poor quality and possible food safety problems. This paper provides a review of factors affecting caking, caking mechanisms, and analysis of caking based on previous studies.

  • In recent years, there has been increasing interest in quasi one-dimensional nanostructural systems, because of their numerous potential applications in various areas, such as materials sciences, electronics, optics, magnetism and energy storage. Specifically, zinc oxide (ZnO) is recognized as one of the most promising oxide semiconductor materials, because of its good optical, electrical, and piezoelectrical properties. The ZnO nanorods were synthesized using vapor-solid (VS) mechanism on soda lime glass substrate without the presence of metal catalyst. ZnO nanorods were prepared thermal evaporation of a Zn powder at 500. As-fabricated ZnO nanorods had an average diameter and length of 40nm and 3$\mu\textrm{m}$. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the ZnO nanorods were single crystalline with the growth direction perpendicular to the (101) lattice plane. The influences of reaction time on the formation of the ZnO nanorods were investigated. The Photoluminescence measurements showed that the ZnO nanorods had a strong ultraviolet emission at around 380nm and a green emission at around 500nm.

  • This paper describes the new eigenvalue algorithm exploiting the Implicit Restarted Arnoldi Method (IRAM) and its application to power systems. IRAM is a technique for combining the implicitly shifted mechanism with a k-step Arnoldi factorization to obtain a truncated form of the implicitly shifted QR iteration. The numerical difficulties and storage problems normally associated with the Arnoldi process are avoided. Two power systems, one of which has 36 state variables and the other 150 state variables, have been tested using the ARPACK program, which uses IRAM, and the eigenvalue results are compared with the results obtained from the conventional QR method.

  • Recently, the need for subminiature storage systems has increased with the diversification of portable devices. An actuator for small optical disk drives has to satisfy performance requirements such as higher access speed, lower power consumption, and smaller size. In this paper, we proposed the miniaturized rotary type VCM actuator that had an effective focusing mechanism and secured sufficient bandwidth for small form factor (SFF) optical disk drive (ODD). Initial model was designed by electromagnetic (EM) and structural analyses. Such a model was improved using design of experiments (DOE) procedure based on a Blu-ray disk (BD) 1x specifications.

  • For high density optical storage, there should be a high NA objective lens and a shorter wavelength laser diode. To secure the disc tilt margin related to the coma aberration, moreover, it's difficult to apply the tilt compensation mechanism into the portable PC. In this paper, we proposed the 3-axis asymmetry pickup actuator with high efficiency symmetric magnetic circuit, which consisted of the top cover type inner yoke for high magnetic flux density, the coil stack unit for the 3-axis independent operation and vertically polarized magnets. This newly suggested actuator features DVD-RAM recording, we achieved the high focus & track AC sensitivity and the greatly stabilized system.

  • Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play essential roles in normal and pathophysiological function in liver. In steady state, HSCs contribute to retinoid storage, immune tolerance, and extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis. Upon liver injury, they become activated and lead to morphological and functional changes. Studies have demonstrated that activation of HSCs by various stimuli such as toxins, microbial infection, or metabolic overload can promote the fibrotic changes in liver by production of ECM. Herein, we provide current knowledge about the basic characteristics of HSCs and the mechanism by which they are activated.

  • At central synapses, activity-dependent synaptic plasticity has a crucial role in information processing, storage, learning, and memory under both physiological and pathological conditions. One widely accepted model of learning mechanism and information processing in the brain is Hebbian Plasticity: long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). LTP and LTD are respectively activity-dependent enhancement and reduction in the efficacy of the synapses, which are rapid and synapse-specific processes. A number of recent studies have a strong focal point on the critical importance of another distinct form of synaptic plasticity, non-Hebbian plasticity. Non-Hebbian plasticity dynamically adjusts synaptic strength to maintain stability. This process may be very slow and occur cell-widely. By putting them all together, this mini review defines an important conceptual difference between Hebbian and non-Hebbian plasticity.

  • Grid computing enables the fundamental computing shift from a localized resource computing model to a fully-distributed virtual organization with shared resources. In the grid computing environment, grid users usually get access rights by mapping their credential to local account. The mapped total account is temporally belongs to grid user. So, data on the secondary storage, which is produced by grid operation, can increase the load of system administration or can issue grid user's privacy. In this paper, we design a data management system for grid user to cover these problems. This system implements template account mechanism and manages local grid data.
