  • Nowadays, there are a lot of evidence that mutation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene is one of the most common genetic abnormalities in neoplastic progression. In this study, we analyzed 20 specimens of oral tumors(squamous cell carcinoma 14 cases, ameloblastoma 3 cases, adenoid cystic carcinoma 2 cases, malignant schwannoma 1 case)using polymerase chain reaction and direct sequencing which used an automated DNA sequencer and software for detection of mutations. Polymerase chain reactions were performed with 4 sets of primers encompassing exon 5, 6, 7, 8, and direct sequencing method was employed. The results were as followings. 1. We detected 10 point mutations out of 20 specimens (50%). 2. The genetic alterations included 7 mis-sense mutations resulting in single amino acid subtitutions, 2 silent mutations, 1 non-sense mutations encoding a stop codon. 3. Mutations were mostly in exon 7(7 out of 10 mutations, 70%) and involved codons 225, 234, 235, 236, 238, 247. 4. Therse were 4 cases of $T{\rightarrow}A$ transversion, 2 cases of $C{\rightarrow}A$ transversion, $A{\rightarrow}G$ transition, 1 case of $C{\rightarrow}G$, $T{\rightarrow}G$ transversion respectively. 5. We could find out point mutations more conveniently using PCR - Automated Direct Sequencing method.

  • This paper describes recognition results using the modified Learning Vector Quantization (MLVQ2) method which we proposed previously. At first, we investigated the property of duration of 29 Korean consonants and found that the variances of th duration were extremely big comparing to other languages. We carried out preliminary recognition experiments for three stop consonants P, T and K. From the recognition results, we defined the optimum conditions for the learning. Then we applied the MLVQ2 method to the recognition of Korean consonants. The training was carried out using the phoneme samples in the 611 word vocabulary uttered by 2 male speakers, where each of the speakers uttered two repetitions. The recognition experiment was carried out for the phoneme samples in two repetitions of the 611 word vocabulary uttered by another male speaker. The recognition scores for the twelve plosives were 68.2% for the test samples. The recofnition scores for the 29 Korean consonants were 64.8% for the test samples.

  • The facilities with new technologies in the recent power plants become larger and need a lot of high cost for maintenance due to stop operations and accidents from the operating machines. Therefore, it claims new systems to monitor the operating status and predict the faults of the machines. This research classifies the normal/abnormal status of the machines into 5 levels which are normal-level/abnormal-level/care-level/dangerous-level/fault and develops the new system that predicts faults without stop operation in power plants. We propose the regional segmentation technique in the frequency domain from the data of the operating machines and generate the Peak-codes similar to the Bar-codes, The high efficient and economic operations of the power plants will be achieved by carrying out the pre-maintenance at the care level of 5 levels in the plants. In order to be utilized easily at power plants, we developed the algorithm appling to a notebook computer from signal acquisition to the discrimination.

  • KIER has been developing a Ru-based preferential oxidation catalysts and a novel fuel processing system to provide hydrogen rich gas to residential PEMFCs system. The catalytic activity of Ru-based catalysts was investigated at different Ru loading amount and different support structure. The obtained result indicated that 2 wt% loaded Ru-based catalyst supported on ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ showed high activity in low temperature range and suppressed the methanation reaction. The developed prototype fuel processor showed thermal efficiency of 78% as a HHV basis with methane conversion of 92%. CO concentration below 10 ppm in the produced gas is achieved with separate preferential oxidation unit under the condition of $[O_2]/[CO]=2.0$. The partial load operation have been carried out to test the performance of fuel processor from 40% to 80% load, showing stable methane conversion and CO concentration below 10 ppm. The durability test for the daily start-stop and 8 h operation procedure is under investigation and shows no deterioration of its performance after 50 start-stop cycles. In addition to the system design and development.

  • Flutter is a dangerous phenomenon encountered in flexible structures subjected to aerodynamic forces. This includes aircraft, buildings and bridges. Flutter occurs as a result of interactions between aerodynamic, stiffness, and inertia forces on a structure. In an aircraft, as the speed of the flow increases, there may be a point at which the structural damping is insufficient to damp out the motion which is increasing due to aerodynamic energy being added to the structure. This vibration can cause structural failure, and therefore considering flutter characteristics is an essential part of designing an aircraft. Scientists and engineers studied flutter and developed theories and mathematical tools to analyze the phenomenon. Strip theory aerodynamics, beam structural models, unsteady lifting surface methods (e.g., Doublet-Lattice) and finite element models expanded analysis capabilities. Periodic Structures have been in the focus of research for their useful characteristics and ability to attenuate vibration in frequency bands called "stop-bands". A periodic structure consists of cells which differ in material or geometry. As vibration waves travel along the structure and face the cell boundaries, some waves pass and some are reflected back, which may cause destructive interference with the succeeding waves. This may reduce the vibration level of the structure, and hence improve its dynamic performance. In this paper, for the first time, we analyze the flutter characteristics of a wing with a periodic change in its sandwich construction. The new technique preserves the external geometry of the wing structure and depends on changing the material of the sandwich core. The periodic analysis and the vibration response characteristics of the model are investigated using a finite element model for the wing. Previous studies investigating the dynamic bending response of a periodic sandwich beam in the absence of flow have shown promising results.

  • The purpose of this research is to quantify the compliance of on-road emission from a light duty diesel vehicle, based on a comparison to emission regulation standard. $NO_x$, CO and THC emissions were measured using a portable device on a selected real-world driving route with a length of approximately 22 km. On-road measurements were repeated by 10 times on a same route to reflect variability in traffic conditions. A test route was divided into 22 road links with length of 1 km to analyze emission results with higher spatial resolution. The average emissions of $NO_x$, CO and THC over total travel distance, which is approximately 220 km, were quantified to be in compliance with emission regulation standards. Under higher spatial resolution, $NO_x$ concentration exceeded a standard in 92 links out of 220 links. The extended time in stop period and the stop-and-go driving cycle were identified as two important reasons for increased $NO_x$ emissions in observed cases. Heavy traffics showed higher $NO_x$ emissions than free flow. These results indicate that the real-world vehicle emissions might exceed the compliance level associate with traffic conditions. Another interesting observation of this research is that the on-road emission characteristics can be independent to the average speed of road links with higher spatial resolution. Variability in on-road emission might not be fully described by solely relying on an average speed, because variability in traffic conditions and road conditions can influence on real-world vehicle emissions.

  • We have studied the anodic oxidation of silicon in the anisotropic etchant of EPW(Ethylenediamine, Pyrocatechol and Water) solution using the cyclic polarization technique. The samples have been characterized by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The results of cyclic polarization experiments show that the anodic oxides formed on p- and n-type silicon wafers break down at the same potential while breakdown does not occur up to open circuit potential in the case of $p^+$-Si. Strong etch-resistance of $p^+$-XPS. SIMS depth profiles suggest that the critical concentration of boron for etch-stop to occur appears to be much higher than what is widely believed.

  • The shoe brake of the KTX is used in low speed when the electric brake is not effective. The main purpose of the shoe brake is to stop the train to a desired stop point at the station. Lots of defects have been encountered in the shoe brake unit since the KTX started its operation. To improve the reliability of shoe brake unit of the KTX power car, first of all, failure modes of the KTX shoe brake unit were analyzed. Main failure modes are cracks in the shoe friction material and fracture in the welded joints of the shoe backing steel structure. Several methods to remove the defects of the shoe brake unit were proposed and on-board tests were carried out: Increase of the strength of the shoe key and shoe cam, which decreased a little the occurrence of cracks in the shoe friction material; Redesign of the shoe backing steel structure, which eliminated the occurrence of the cracks in the backing plate but could not solve completely the crack problem in the shoe friction material; Development of a new friction material, which with redesign of the shoe backing steel structure could solve satisfactorily the crack problem in the shoe friction material.
