In 2018, Cui et al proposed a three-factor remote user authentication scheme using biometrics. Cui et al claimed that their authentication scheme is vulnerable to eavesdropping attack, stolen smart card attack, and especially Dos(denial-of-service) attack. Also they claimed that it is safe to password guessing attack, impersonation attack, and anonymity attack. In this paper, however, we analyze Cui et al's authentication scheme and show that it is vulnerable to replay attack, insider attack, stolen smart card attack, and user impersonation attack, etc. In addition, we present the design flaws in Cui et al's authentication scheme as well.
User authentication and access control are two important components in high security applications. Recently, Chen and Yeh proposed a method to integrate both of them seamlessly. However, Chen-Yeh's scheme is vulnerable to a stolen verifier attack, since it maintains a smart card identifier table in a remote server. Therefore, this paper modifies Chen-Yeh's scheme and propose a new integrated authentication and access control scheme that is resilient to the stolen verifier attack while inheriting all the merits of Chen-Yeh's scheme. Security analysis shows that the proposed scheme withstands well-known security attacks and exhibits many good features.

In this paper, we analyze the authentication scheme of Hwang et al. proposed in 2023 and propose a new authentication scheme that improves its problems. Hwang et al. claimed that their authentication scheme was practical and secure, but as a result of analysis in this paper, it is possible to attack the password/ID guessing attack and session key disclosure attack due to insider attack and stolen smart card attack. In addition, Hwang et al.'s authentication scheme, which provides user anonymity, does not provide user untraceability due to its unstable design. The proposed authentication scheme, which improves these problems, not only provides user untraceability, but also is secure for stolen smart card attack, insider attack, session key disclosure attack, and replay attack. In addition, except for one fuzzy extraction operation, it shows the same complexity or very similar one as related authentication schemes. Therefore, the proposed authentication scheme can be said to be an authentication scheme with safety and practicality.

Secure and efficient authentication schemes over insecure networks have been a very important issue with the rapid development of networking technologies. Wang et al. proposed a remote user authentication scheme using smart cards. However, recently, Chen et al. pointed out that their scheme is vulnerable to the impersonation attack and the parallel session attack, and they proposed an enhanced authentication scheme. Chen et al. claimed that their scheme is secure against the various attacks. However, we have found that their scheme cannot resist the parallel attack and the stolen smart card attack. Therefore, in this paper, we show the security flaws in Chen et al.'s scheme and propose an improved remote user authentication scheme using tamper-resistant smart cards to solve the problem of Chen et al.'s scheme. We also analyze our scheme in terms of security and performance.

Password-based authentication using smart card provides two factor authentications, namely a successful login requires the client to have a valid smart card and a correct password. While it provides stronger security guarantees than only password authentication, it could also fail if both authentication factors are compromised ((1) the user's smart card was stolen and (2) the user's password was exposed). In this case, there is no way to prevent the adversary from impersonating the user. Now, the new technology of biometrics is becoming a popular method for designing a more secure authentication scheme. In terms of physiological and behavior human characteristics, biometric information is used as a form of authentication factor. Biometric information, such as fingerprints, faces, voice, irises, hand geometry, and palmprints can be used to verify their identities. In this article, we review the biometric-based authentication scheme by Cheng et al. and provide a security analysis on the scheme. Our analysis shows that Cheng et al.'s scheme does not guarantee any kind of authentication, either server-to-user authentication or user-to-server authentication. The contribution of the current work is to demonstrate these by mounting two attacks, a server impersonation attack and a user impersonation attack, on Cheng et al.'s scheme. In addition, we propose the enhanced authentication scheme that eliminates the security vulnerabilities of Cheng et al.'s scheme.
In the Internet, user authentication is the most important service in secure communications. Although password-based mechanism is the most widely used method of the user authentication in the network, people are used to choose easy-to-remember passwords, and thus suffers from some Innate weaknesses. Therefore, using a memorable password it vulnerable to the dictionary attacks. The techniques used to prevent dictionary attacks bring about a heavy computational workload. In this paper, we describe a recent solution, the Optimal Strong-Password Authentication (OSPA) protocol, and that it is vulnerable to the stolen-verifier attack and an impersonation attack. Then, we propose an Improved Optimal Strong-Password Authentication (I-OSPA) protocol, which is secure against stolen-verifier attack and impersonation attack. Also, since the cryptographic operations are computed by the processor in the smart card, the proposed I-OSPA needs relatively low computational workload and communicational workload for user.

In 2011, C.-T. Li et al. proposed a secure user authentication scheme, which is an improvement over Kim et al.'s scheme to resolve several security flaws such as off-line password guessing attack and masquerading attack. C.-T. Li et al. claimed that their scheme prevents smart card security related attacks. Moreover, it provides mutual authentication and session key establishment. However, we found that their scheme is vulnerable to password guessing attack through password change phase, smart card forgery attack and stolen verifier attack. Moreover, C.-T. Li et al.'s scheme is not secure against password guessing attack as they claimed. In this paper, we also point out that their scheme is not practical to use.

Recently Lin et al. proposed a simple remote user authentication scheme using smart cards. But the proposed scheme has not satisfied security requirements which should be considered in the user authentication scheme using the password based smart card. In this paper, we show that Lin et al.'s scheme is insecure against off-line password guessing attack. In their scheme, any legal user's password may be derived from the password guessing when his/her smart card is stolen and the secret information is leaked from the smart card by an attacker. Accordingly, we demonstrate the vulnerability of their scheme and present an enhancement to resolve such security weakness. Our proposed scheme can withstand various possible attacks including password guessing attack. Furthermore, this improved scheme can provide mutual authentication to improve the security robustness. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme is relatively more effective than Lin et al.'s scheme.
Recently Lee et al. proposed an improved symmetric key-based remote user authentication scheme to eliminate the security weaknesses of Kumari et al.'s scheme. They hence claimed that their scheme is secure to various well-known attacks. However, we found that Lee et al.'s scheme is still insecure against outsider attack, smart card stolen and off-line password guessing attack. To overcome these security vulnerabilities, we propose an enhanced authentication scheme with key-agreement which is based on the fuzzy-extractor. Furthermore, we prove that the proposed scheme is more secure, and that it serves to gratify all of the required security properties. Finally, we compare the performance and functionality of the proposed scheme with those of previous schemes.

In this paper, we analyse the weaknesses of authentication scheme preserving user anonymity proposed by Khan et al in 2011 and we propose a new authentication schemes preserving user anonymity that improved these weaknesses. Khan et al's authentication scheme is vulnerable to insider attack and doesn't provide user anonymity to the server. Also, this scheme is still a weakness of wrong password input by mistake in spite of proposing the password change phase. In this paper, we will show that Khan et al's scheme is vulnerable to the stolen smart card attack and the strong server/user masquerade attack. The proposed authentication scheme propose the improved user anonymity, which can provide more secure privacy to user by improving these weaknesses.
