Based on the full Navier-Stokes solutions, the thermohydrodynamic performance of a long journal bearing is investigated. A numerical method based on Galerkin's procedure and B-spline test functions has been presented for solving two-dimensional problems involving fluid flow and heat transfer. For numerical stability the artificial compressibility is employed to the conservation of mass. The discretized algebraic equations are solved by Newton's method. Effects of varying the speed of an inner cylinder to load carrying capacity are investigated. The results indicated that the increase of the speed of an inner cylinder has a significant effect on the temperature profile and ultimately on the performance.

Eyer since the Prandtl's experiment in 1934 and X-21 airjet test in 1950 both attempting to reduce drag, it was found that controlling the velocities of surface for extremely fast-moving object in the air through suction or injection was highly effective and active method. To obtain the right amount of suction or injection, however, repetitive trial-and error parameter test has been still used up to now. This study started from an attempt to decide optimal amount of suction and injection of incompressible Navier-Stokes by employing optimization techniques. However, optimization with traditional methods are very limited, especially when Reynolds number gets high and many unexpected variables emerges. In earlier study, we have proposed an algorithm to solve this problem by using step by step method in analysis and introducing SQP method in optimization. In this study, we propose more effective and robust algorithm and techniques in solving flow optimization problem.
One-dimensional (1D) models of incompressible flows, can be of interest for many applications in which fast resolution times are demanded, such as fluid-structure interaction of flows in compliant pipes and hemodynamics. This work proposes a higher-order 1D theory for the flow-field analysis of incompressible, laminar, and viscous fluids in rigid pipes. This methodology is developed in the domain of the Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), which was first employed in structural mechanics. In the framework of 1D modelling, CUF allows to express the primary variables (i.e., velocity and pressure fields in the case of incompressible flows) as arbitrary expansions of the generalized unknowns, which are functions of the 1D computational domain coordinate. As a consequence, the governing equations can be expressed in terms of fundamental nuclei, which are invariant of the theory approximation order. Several numerical examples are considered for validating this novel methodology, including simple Poiseuille flows in circular pipes and more complex velocity/pressure profiles of Stokes fluids into non-conventional computational domains. The attention is mainly focused on the use of hierarchical McLaurin polynomials as well as piece-wise nonlocal Lagrange expansions of the generalized unknowns across the pipe section. The preliminary results show the great advantages in terms of computational costs of the proposed method. Furthermore, they provide enough confidence for future extensions to more complex fluid-dynamics problems and fluid-structure interaction analysis.
We developed a three dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on the level set method to simulate two phase flows with high density ratio. The Navier-Stokes equations with consideration of the surface tension effects are solved by using SIMPLE algorithm on a non-staggered grid. The present code is validated by simulating two test problems. First one is to simulate a rising bubble inside a cube. The thickness of the interface of the bubble is shown to affect the pressure distribution around the interface. As the thickness decreases, the pressure field around the interface becomes more oscillatory. As the bubble rises, a ring vortex is shown to form around the interface and the bubble eventually develops into an ellipsoidal shape. Merge of two bubbles inside a container is secondly tested to show the robustness of the present code for two phase flow simulation. Numerical results show stable and reliable behavior during the process of merging of two bubbles. The velocity and pressure fields around the interface of bubbles are shown oscillation free during the merging of two bubbles.
An analytical and numerical examination of second-order fractional-step methods and boundary condition for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. In this study, the compatibility condition for pressure Poisson equation and its boundary conditions, stability, and numerical accuracy of canonical fractional-step methods has been investigated. It has been found that satisfaction of compatibility condition depends on tentative velocity and pressure boundary condition, and that the compatible boundary conditions for type D method and approximately compatible boundary conditions for type P method are proper for divergence-free velocity for type D and approximately divergence-free for type P method. Instability of canonical fractional-step methods is induced by approximation of implicit viscous term with explicit terms, and the stability criteria have been founded with simple model problems and numerical experiments of cavity flow and Taylor vortex flow. The numerical accuracy of canonical fractional-step methods with its consistent boundary conditions shows second-order accuracy except $D_{MM}$ condition, which make approximately first-order accuracy due to weak coupling of boundary conditions.
Study on swimming of microorganisms like, sperm motility, cilia beating, bacterial flagellar propulsion has found immense significance in the field of biological fluiddynamics. Because of the complexity involved, it is challenging for the researchers to model such problems. Immersed boundary method has proved its efficacy in the field of biological fluiddynamics, The present work aims at performing a numerical study on the microorganism locomotion using the immersed boundary method proposed by Peskin[1]. A two-dimensional model of the microorganism is modeled as thin elastic filament described as a sine wave. The neutrally buoyant organism undergoing deformations is immersed in a viscous and incompressible fluid. The fluid quantities are described using Eulerian coordinates and the immersed body is represented by Lagrangian coordinates. The Eulerian and Lagrangian variables are connected by the Dirac delta function. The Navier-Stokes equations governing the fluid flow are solved using the fractional step method on a staggered Cartesian grid system. The developed numerical code in FORTRAN will be validated by comparing the numerical results with the available results.
This paper proposes a method for extending simulating fluid on mobile device, which was only possible on desktop PC. Fluid simulation is done by solving Navier-Stokes equation numerically, and previous research were mainly focused on numerical stability [1], and realism [2]. However, such methods assume rich computational resources, which is not available on mobile devices. On the other hand, rigid-body solver is the mostly used physically-based technique [3], and only simple height field-based method is released for fluid simulation [4]. To overcome these problems, we proposes a modified incompressible fluid dynamics solver for the mobile device, and also we propose a technique for visualizing fluids on the mobile device.

Flexible media such as the paper, the film, etc. are thin, light and very flexible. They behave in geometrically nonlinear. Any of small force makes large deformation. So we must including aerodynamic effect when its behavior is predicted. Thus, it becomes fully coupled fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem. In FSI problems, where the fluid mesh near the structure undergoes large deformations and becomes unacceptably distorted, which drive the time step to a very small value for explicit calculations, the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE) methods or rezoning are used to create a new undistorted mesh for the fluid domain, which allows the calculations to continue. In this paper, FE sheet model considering geometric nonlinearity is formulated to simulate the behavior of the flexible media. Aerodynamic force to the media by surrounding air is calculated by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Q2Q1(Taylor-Hood) element which means biquadratic for velocity and bilinear for pressure is used for fluid domain. Q2Q1 element satisfies LBB condition and any stabilization technique is not needed. In this paper, cantilevered sheet in the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes flow is simulated to check the mesh motion and numerical integration scheme, and then falling paper in the air is simulated and the effects of some representative parameters are investigated.
In this paper, the diffraction problems for fixed offshore structures are solved using a hybrid scheme. In this hybrid scheme, potential-based solutions and the Navier-Stokes-based finite volume method (FVM) with a volume-of-fluid (VOF) method are combined. We introduce a buffer zone for efficient wave-making and damping. In this buffer zone, the near field solution from FVM-VOF is gradually changed to Stokes' 2nd order wave solutions. Three different models, including the truncated cylinder, sphere, and wigleyIII model, are numerically investigated in regular waves with a wave steepness of 1/30. The efficiency and accuracy of the hybrid scheme are numerically validated from results using different domain sizes and buffer zones. The wave exciting forces from the FVM-VOF simulations are compared with experiments and potential-based solutions from the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM). This comparison shows good agreement between the hybrid scheme and potential-based solutions.

Modern multidisciplinary computational fluid dynamics often incorporates moving boundaries, as would be required in the applications such as design optimization, aeroelasticity, or forced boundary motion. It is challenging to develop robust, efficient grid deformation algorithms when large displacement of the moving boundaries is required. In this paper, a volume grid deformation code is developed based on the finite macro-element and the transfinite Interpolation, and then interfaces to a structured multi-block Navier-Stokes in-house code. As demonstrated by an airfoil with pitching motion, the hysteresis loops of lift, drag and moment coefficients of the developed method are shown to be in good agreement with those of experimental data.
