Effect of Solvent on Swelling, Porosity and Morphology of Transparent Poly (HEMA)

  • Transparent materials are well known but preparation of transparent poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate {poly (HEMA)} material by varying solvent is a new one and economically reliable. This material is prepared from hydroxyl based monomer HEMA by radical polymerization using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as initiator and isobutanol, 2-butanol, 1-butanol, hexane and toluene as a solvent. The reaction temperature, time and stirring speed were set at $70^{\circ}C$, 4 hrs and 150 rpm, respectively. The polymer was characterized for functional group by IR spectroscopy. It was observed that the intensity of band at $1637 cm^{-1}$ a characteristic band of C=C stretching disappeared indicating that it was completely consumed after polymerization. It was observed that swelling percentage increases with increase as time passes but after a certain time a constant swelling percentage is achieved. SEM pictures reveals that poly (HEMA) prepared by different solvent shows pore with a distinguishable void up to several micrometers. The BET surface area, cumulative pore volume and average pore diameter is greater in poly (HEMA) prepared by hexane as a solvent compared to other solvents. Poly (HEMA) prepared by 1-butanol as a solvent shows higher glass transition temperature compared to other solvents. Poly (HEMA) prepared by different solvents shows $90{\sim}94%$ light transmission property from light transmission measurement and looks transparent.

  • Surface modification is a type of mechanical manipulation skills to achieve extensive aims including corrosion control, exterior appearance, abrasion resistance, electrical insulation and electrical conductivity of substrate materials by generating a protective surface using electrical, physical and chemical treatment on the surface of parts made from metallic materials. Such surface modification includes plating, anodizing, chemical conversion treatment, painting, lining, coating and surface hardening; this study conducted cavitation experiment to assess improvement of durability using anodizing. In order to observe surface characteristics with applied current density, the electrolyte temperature, concentration was maintained at constant condition. To prevent hindrance of stable growth of oxide layer due to local temperature increase during the experiment, stirring was maintained at constant speed. In addition, using galvanostatic method, it was maintained at processing time of 40minutes for 10 to $30mA/cm^2$. The cavitation experiment was carried out with an ultra sonic vibratory apparatus using piezo-electric effect with modified ASTM-G32. The peak-to-peak amplitude was $30{\mu}m$ and the distance between the horn tip and specimen was 1mm. The specimen after the experiment was cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, dried in a vacuum oven for more than 24 hours, and weighed with an electric balance. The surface damage morphology was observed with 3D analysis microscope. As a result of the study, differences were observed surface hardness and anti-cavitation characteristics depending on the development of oxide film with the anodizing process time.

황산에 의한 페로망간 집진분 중의 망간 침출 (Sulfuric Acid Leaching of Manganese from Ferromanganese Dust)

  • 본 연구에서는 페로망간 제조공정에서 발생한 집진분의 황산침출에 대하여 조사하였다. 황산의 농도, 반응온도, 교반속도, 입자크기 및 고-액비가 집진분 중의 Mn과 Fe의 침출에 미치는 영향에 대하여 검토하였다. Mn과 Fe의 침출속도는 황산의 농도가 높고 반응온도가 높을수록 높아졌다. 실험결과를 입자수축모델을 이용하여 검토한 결과 침출반응은 입자표면에서의 화학반응에 의해서 율속되는 것으로 생각된다. Mn과 Fe 침출반응의 활성화에너지는 각각 79.55 kJ/mol과 77.48 kJ/mol로 계산되었다.

Cryoscopy 裝置와 方法의 改良에 關한 硏究 (On Automatic Apparatus for Cryoscopy and Improvement in Experimental Method)

  • 從來에 開發된 cryoscopy 裝置는 手動型으로서 一回測定에 所要되는 最少 한時間을 두사람이 測定에 꼬박 關與하여야 하는 不便을 갖는다. 뿐만 아니라 手動攪拌에 依한 不規則的攪拌速度에서 오는 誤差나, Beckmann 溫度計의 感溫部가 나타내는 큰 熱容量 및 判讀時의 視角差차와 波勞度에서 오는 誤差等이 不可避하게 作用한다. 그러므로 本 硏究에서는 이들 誤差를 減少시키기 爲하여 다음과 같이 裝置改良에 依한 自動測定法을 開發하였다. (1) 水槽溫度의 自動精密調節 (2) 感溫部의 熱容量이 매우 작은 thermistor에 依한 溫度測定 (3) 檢流計의 反射光을 感光紙에 照射시켜 轉移溫度를 自動記錄하는 이른바 溫度自動記錄裝置의 開發 (4) 攪拌裝置의 自動化 한편 從前부터 使用되어 오는 10水和物 芒硝는 加入時 一部가 容器壁에 묻어 反應에 關與하지 못하며, 또한 10水和物화물을 部分的으로나마 脫水되지 않은채 保存하여 測定에 使用하기는 어려우므로 本硏究에서는 無水芒硝를 써서 하는 實驗條件을 아울러 究明하였다.

Solubility of TiO2 in NaF-CaF2-BaF2 Melts

  • The solubility of $TiO_2$ in $NaF-CaF_2-BaF_2$ ternary eutectic melts was investigated at the temperature range of $1025-1150^{\circ}C$. The least-squares equation was obtained from the relationship between the reciprocal temperature and the natural logarithm of the titanium concentration in the melts saturated with $TiO_2$. The corresponding partial molar enthalpy of dissolution of $TiO_2$ was found to be 188 kJ/mol. The titanium saturation concentration was 3.73 wt% at $1100^{\circ}C$. From the titanium concentration change with the added amount of $TiO_2$ at different holding time after a final stirring, it was found that not only complete dissolution of $TiO_2$ but also enough sedimentation of excessive $TiO_2$ should be guaranteed to obtain more reliable solubility data. The holding time of 10 h was found to be enough for the excessive $TiO_2$ particles to settle down in our experimental conditions. It is noteworthy that in case of adding $TiO_2$ in excess of its solubility, the $Ba_{1.12}(Ti_8O_{16})$ phase was observed at the lower and bottom of the solidified salt ingots.

Evaluation of Design of Experiments to Develop MOF-5 Adsorbent for Acetylene Capture

  • A design of experiments was evaluated in optimizing MOF-5 synthesis for acetylene adsorption. At first, mixture design was used to optimize precursor concentration, terephthalic acid, zinc acetate dihydrate and N,N-dimethylformamide. More specifically, 13 conditions with various molar ratios were designed by extreme vertices design method. After preparing the samples, XRD, N2 physisorption and SEM analysis were performed for their characterization. Moreover, acetylene adsorption experiments were carried out over the samples under identical conditions. The optimal precursor composition for MOF-5 synthesis was predicted on a molar basis as follows: terephthalic acid : acetate dihydrate : dimethylformamide = 0.1 : 0.4 : 0.5. Thereafter, multi-level factorial design was designated to investigate the effect of synthesis reaction conditions such as temperature, time and stirring speed. By the statistical analysis of 18 samples designed, 4 reaction parameters were determined for additional adsorption experiments. Therefore, MOF-5 prepared under the synthesis time and temperature of 100 ℃ and 12 h, respectively, showed the maximum adsorption capacity of 15.1 mmol/g.

Synthesis and Characterization of SnO2 Nanoparticles by Hydrothermal Processing

  • Tin (IV) dioxide ($SnO_2$) has attracted much attention due to its potential scientific significance and technological applications. $SnO_2$ nanoparticles were prepared under low temperature and pressure conditions via precipitation from a 0.1 M $SnCl_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ solution by slowly adding $NH_4OH$ while rapidly stirring the solution. $SnO_2$ nanoparticles were obtained from the reaction in the temperature range from 130 to $250^{\circ}C$ during 6 h. The microstructure and phase of the synthesized tin oxide particles were studied using XRD and TEM analyses. The average crystalline sizes of the synthesized $SnO_2$ particles were from 5 to 20 nm and they had a narrow distribution. The average crystalline size of the synthesized particles increased as the reaction temperature increased. The crystalline size of the synthesized tin oxide particles decreased with increases in the pH value. The X-ray analysis showed that the synthesized particles were crystalline, and the SAED patterns also indicate that the synthesized $SnO_2$ nanoparticles were crystalline. Furthermore, the morphology of the synthesized $SnO_2$ nanoparticles was as a function of the reaction temperature. The effects of the synthesis parameters, such as the pH condition and reaction temperature, are also discussed.

유산균 함유 이중층 미세캡슐화를 위한 조건 최적화 (Optimization of Conditions for the Double Layer Microencapsulation of Lactic Acid Bacteria)

  • 유산균의 일종인 Lactobacillus sp.을 중심물질로 하고 그 바깥을 2중층으로 미세캡슐화하는 공정을 위한 최적 조건을 확립하였는데, [중심물질]과 [피복물질]의 혼합비율과 유화제 첨가농도, 2중층 유화계내의 2종류 유화제(PGPR/PSML)에 의한 상승효과, 분산액의 온도 및 분산액의 교반속도가 유산균함유 2중층 미세캡슐화 수율에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. W/O형 및 W/O/W형 유화계내에서의 중심물질과 피복물질의 혼합비율과 유화제 첨가농도에 다른 최적조건을 탐색한 결과, Lactobacillus sp.(Cm)와 옥배경화유(Wm)와의 혼합비율이 [W/O형 Cm]:[W/O형 Wm]=3:2(w/w), 1.00%의 유화제(PGPR) 첨가농도에서 최대의 수율을 나타내었으며, 유산균을 옥배경화유가 단일층으로 둘러싼 W/O형 유화계와 다당류 호화액의 혼합비율 즉, [W/O/W형 중심물질, CM]:[W/O/W형 피복물질, WM]=1:3(w/w) 0.65%의 유화제(PSML) 농도에서 가장 높은 미세캡슐화 수율을 얻을 수 있은 것으로 판명되었다. 최종적으로, 유산균 2중층 미세캡슐화 공정을 위한 여러 가지 요인들 중 물리적인 조건의 변화를 살펴본 결과, 분산매의 온도가 10$^{\circ}C$이며, 미세캡슐을 함유하는 분산액 제조시의 교반정도가 270rpm일 때 2중 미세캡슐화의 가장 높은 수율을 확인 할 수 있다.

천연 항균 효소제 난백 lysozyme의 한외여과 조건 최적화 (Ultrafiltration and Separation Process Optimization of Hen Egg White Lysozyme as Natural Antimicrobial Enzyme)

  • 난백 lysozyme은 박테리아 세포벽을 선택적으로 분해하므로 식품 가공 공정에 있어서 천연 식품보존제로서의 이용 가치가 높다. 기존의 결정화와 냉동건조 방법 대신 PM30 막을 사용하여 한외여과함으로써 13종의 난백 단백질로부터 single-step에 의해 lysozyme을 분리하고자 하였다. 냉동 건조한 lysozyme을 pH 4.6 citrate-phosphate buffer에 녹여 PM30 막으로 한외여과시 시료 농도, 온도, 막 횡단 압력, 교반속도 등의 운용 조건을 변화시켜주면서 flux를 최대화하는 최적 막분리 조건을 구하였다. 최적 막 분리 조건하에서 시간이 경과함에 따라 막 재질과 막 침착이 flux에 미치는 효과를 측정하였고, 막 분리 여액내 단백질 농도와 lysozyme 농도, 비활성도를 측정하였다. PM30 막을 이용한 난백 lysozyme의 막 분리 최적 조건은 시료농도 0.25%, 온도 $35^{\circ}C$, 막 횡단 압력 30 psi, 교반속도 300 rpm 이었다. 막 분리 초기 12분까지는 YM30 막의 flux가 더 높았으나, 정상상태에서의 flux는 PM30 막이 더 높았다. PM30 막의 분리 여액내 단백질 농도와 lysozyme 농도는 YM30 막에 비해 낮았으나, 비활성도는 2배 이상 높았다. 5회 막 분리한 PM30 막은 새 PM30 막에 비하여 flux가 약 30% 감소하였으나 시간 경과에 따른 flux 감소 경향은 거의 동일하였으며, 막 분리 35분 경과 후 정상상태에 이르러 초기 flux 약 70%를 유지하였다. 막 분리 여액내 lysozyme 농도와 비활성도는 각각 110 units/mL, 2,821 units/mg protein이었으므로, PM30 막을 이용한 한외여과 공정은 천연 항균 효소제인 lysozyme을 분리하는데 매우 효과적인 방법이었다.

수침과 건조조건을 달리하여 만든 찹쌀가루와 멥쌀가루의 특성 (The Properties of Rice Flours Prepared by Dry- and Wet-Milling of Soaked Glutinous and Normal Grains)

  • To prepare ready-to-use rice flour as de novo material for processed rice foods, glutinous(W) and normal rice grains (N) were soaked for 1, 8, and 12 hours prior to processing. One half (DG) was air-dried and milled, and the other (WG) was milled and air-dried. General, morphological and pasting properties of the flours (NDG, NWG, WDG, WWG) were compared to those of a control (raw milled rice without soaking). The general compositions of the rice flours varied with soaking. Crude ash was considerably decreased at the beginning of soaking (1 hour). With the soaking, the rice flour, having polygonal shaped particles and a layered surface, acquired particles with smooth edges, which were then uniformly distributed. Additionally, the WG flour was lighter and had a lower ${\Delta}E$ value than the DG flour, due to a higher L and less +b as a result of soaking. Compared to the control, the WBC of the normal rice flour was decreased significantly with soaking, and the WG flour had significantly lower WBCs than the DG flour. Stirring number (SN), an indicator of ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity, was highly and significantly correlated with WBC (r=-0.85, p=0.0001) in the normal rice flour. At $80^{\circ}C$, the SP and solubility of all the soaked rice flours were much higher than those of the control. Positive (r=+0.85, p=0.0001) and negative (r=-0.61, p=0.02) correlations between the SP and solubility of the normal and glutinous rice flours were found, respectively. Using RVA, the pasting temperature of NDG was lower than that of NWG (p<0.0001). The peak viscosities of all the soaked flours were significantly decreased with soaking (p<0.0l), with the highest viscosity in the normal rice flour soaked for 8 hrs. Total setback, indicative of retrogradation, was lower in NDG than in NWG, with the lowest setback at 8 hrs of' soaking. Based on these finding, the NDG flour with 8 hrs of soaking was less damaged, and had a lower total setback and lower pasting temperature, which would make it an appropriate rice flour for commercial mass production.
