  • In order to study the role of LATS in the pathogenesis of the Graves' disease, the serum activity of the LATS was determined by the bioassay of the modified McKenzie method. The subjects examined in the study consisted of 76 individuals including 12 cases of normal control, 54 cases with typical Graves' disease and 10 cases of chronic thyroiditis. The data observed in the patients with the Graves' disease were analyzed in comparison with the clinical features, laboratory findings, and responsiveness to the treatment. The results obtained are as follows: 1. None of the subjects which did not have the Graves' disease showed a positive LATS activity, except one case with the chronic thyroiditis. 2. Twenty-two out of the 54 cases with the Graves' disease showed positive results for LATS(40.7%). The positivity was significantly higher in the patients who had been treated with anti. thyroid regimen but still showed hyperthyroidism than in the patients who had not been treated. 3. The activity of LATS was gradually decreased or even became absent as the hyperthyroidism was corrected after the treatment. 4. No significant difference was noticed in age & sex between the positive and negative groups of LATS. 5. There was no evidence of significant correlation between the LATS activity and clinical features.

  • The electrical muscle stimulator (EMS) based human machine interface (HMI) free to mechanical constraint and muscle fatigue problems are proposed for force feedback in a virtual reality. The device was designed to provide force feedback up to 4.8 N and 2.6 N each to the thumb and forefingers. The main objective of the HMI is to make unnecessary mechanical structures to attach on the hand or fingers. It employs custom EMSs and an interface arranged in the forearm. In this work, major muscle groups such as extensor pollicis brevis (EPB), extensor indicis proprius (EIP), flexor pollicis longus (FPL) and flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) are selected for efficient force feedback and controlled individually. For this, a human muscular-skeletal analysis was performed and verified. The validity of the proposed multi-channel EMS based HMI was evaluated thorough various experiments with ten human subjects, interacting with a virtual environment.

  • The author have studied on the pulp responses to the electric pulp stimulator (Pyo-Cure)(R) in the primary molar age from 4 to 11 of the 186 children (male 100, female 86). The total numbers of teeth used in this study were 1096. The results were as follows ; 1. The difference in responses between the teeth of the male and female was not statistically significant. 2. The difference in responses between the teeth of the right and left sides was not statistically significant. 3. The difference in responses between the teeth of the upper and lower jaws was not statistically significant. 4. The responses of the teeth in the older age is higher than its of the early age. 5. Inspite of advanced root resorption of the primary molars, except severe root resorption, the responses of the teeth was higher according to increasing the age. 6. The responses of the teeth were decreased severely in the primary molars as it becomes exfoliation time.

  • Due to the aging and obesity population in Korea, degenerative musculoskeletal diseases and people suffering from degenerative arthritis are increasing day by day. So, it is necessary to develop rehabilitation treatment device. Conventional high-frequency treatment devices have disadvantages in that therapeutic range is narrow, cost is high, image is adversely affected, treatment time is long, and failure rate is high. This paper proposes a customized therapy device that is stable and effective in reducing treatment time and output to target body part using 2MHz switching frequency, feedback control technique, and joint insulation flexible multipolar electrode. The device can be a new concept high-frequency stimulator to accommodate the advantages of CET and RET.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the speaker recognition system which can select one of operating modes in FES for general paralysis patients. As spiral injury by traffic accident, industrial disaster, or stroke has been increased, the development of FES(Functional Electrical Stimulator) system is urgent to prevent paralysis and atrophy, and to assist the patients walking. For these patients we developed FES system(1). To operate this system one of several operating modes must be selected. As this can not be done by general paralysis patients, an attempt has been tried in this study to select the mode by speaker recognition system. RSC-300 of sensory co. has been chosen as a speaker recognition chip, and PIC16F84 is adapted to interface RSC-300 and FES system.

  • We designed two-dimensional position sensitive MCP(mixt.ochannel plate) detector for FIMS, which is composed of MCP, delay line anode, and delay line readout elec-tronics. And also, we fabricated and tested for the operation stability and resolution of the delay line readout electronic system. An anode simulator and a stimulator were used instead of the real MCP and anode during the test to see the electronic contribution to the resolution. The readout electronics was operated stably and showed time resolution of about 560 ps for the spectral direction and about 100 ps for the image direction respectively.

  • Insulin is a peptide hormone of the endocrine pancreas and exerts a wide variety of physiological actions in insulin sensitive tissues, such as regulation of glucose homeostasis, cell growth, differentiation, learning and memory. However, the role of insulin in osteoblast cells remains to be fully characterized. In this study, we demonstrated that the insulin (100 nM) has the ability to stimulate the phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt/PKB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and the levels of inhibin-${\beta}E$ in the osteoblast-like UMR-106 cells. This insulin-stimulated activities were abolished by the PI3K and MEK1 inhibitors LY294002 and PD98059, respectively. This is the first report proving that insulin is a potential candidate that enables the actions of inhibin-${\beta}E$ subunit of the TGF-${\beta}$ family. The current investigation provides a foundation for the realization of insulin as a potential stimulator in survival signaling pathways in osteoblast-like UMR-106 cells.
