The definition of the Dual system is that the total seismic force resistance is to be provided by the combination of the moment frame and the shear walls or braced frames in proportion to their stiffness and the moment frame shall be capable of resisting at least 25% of the design force in Korean Building Code 2005 (KBC 2005). But, the definition of moment frame is ambiguous whether the moment frame include the imaginary columns in the shear wall (Case I) or include only the columns outside the shear wall (Case II). 60-story RC building was designed as dual system for Case I and Case II, and the required strength and reinforcement are compared. Moment and axial capacity of the shear wall of Case II decreased about 5% due to the absence of the column in the shear wall. The requirement of upper and bottom reinforcement of slab in Case II increased 13% and 40%, respectively, when compared to those of Case I. The required longitudinal reinforcement in columns for Case II is about 1.5 times larger than that of Case I.

Recently, as the demand of small-sized precision parts is rising in precision industry such as mobile, automobile, optic. etc. the requirement of small-sized machine tool is increasing. Desktop machine tool define small-sized machine tool that is able to install in table. According to diminishing in size, Desktop machine tool is able to economize production cost by reducing work area and consuming electric power. But Desktop machine tool generates vibration in acceleration and deceleration modes by inertia force of moving part. Also vibration is generated when it move simultaneously two axis or three axis. Such generating vibration situation is reason of declining stiffness of machine tool structure because of smallizing in size. And this vibration has a large effect on precision of machining products. Therefore, evaluating of the control characteristic is necessary for minimizing vibration of machine tool as much as possible to accomplish precision machining of small-sized parts

The piezoelectric coupling in piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters with load resistance induces electrical damping as well as increase in the system stiffness. Starting from analytically deriving the explicit relations through governing equations in the frequency domain, this work identifies the characteristics of the electrically induced damping mechanism and shows that the electrically induced damping serves as a structural hysteretic damping on condition that a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is excited at its short-circuit resonant frequency and its load resistor is optimally impedance- matched at the same time. Finally, it is analytically verified that the equivalence of a mechanical and an electrically induced damping ratio is required for the maximum power generation at a load resistor, which was claimed in some literature.

The purpose of this paper is to check the structural safety of the network equipments by performing the static and dynamic finite element analysis. The stress and displacement of structures under static loading condition are evaluated to check whether satisfying the design requirement conditions. Since the computed natural frequencies are similar to the results of experiment. the model could be used for the response spectrum analysis where experimental acceleration value at each frequency are used as seismic input excitation. It is shown that the analysis results are a little bit larger than that of the experimental values. Also sensitivity analysis and optimization for the natural frequency are performed and it is found that the first natural frequency is very sensitive to the stiffness of the equipment.

As functional requirement of massive digital information storage devices are on a trend for the higher data transfer rate and lower cost, many different technical efforts are being tested and implemented in the industry. FDB(Fluid Dynamic Soaring) is one of the major breakthroughs in rotor design in terms of TMR budget. Although FDB analysis based on Reynolds' equation is well established and popularly being used for DB design especially for the estimation of bearing stiffness, there are obvious limitations in the approach due to the inherent assumptions. A generalized analysis tool employing the full Navier-Stokes equation and the energy balance is to be beneficial for detailed FDB design In this publication, an efficient geometry modeling method is presented that provides fully integrated inputs for general FVM/FDM codes. By virtue of the flexibility of the presented method, many different detailed FDB design and analysis are carried over with ease.

The mechanism synthesis methods, graphical, analytical and computer-aided technique have been proposed for selecting and scaling mechanical system. According to developing computation tools, mechanism could be synthesized much faster and more correct than previous analytical ways by improved techniques. In this paper, the improved synthesis method is proposed to solve body guidance synthesis problem. To perform the mechanism synthesis for body guidance, a planar linkage is modeled as a set of free three bushings located in design space. The values of bushing stiffness and x, y position of bushings yielding a desired functional requirement related to input motion are found by using an optimization technique.

The stochastic analysis of semi-infinite domain is presented using the weighted integral method, which is improved to include the higher order terms in expanding the displacement vector. To improve the weighted integral method, the Lagrangian remainder is taken into account in the expansion of the status variable with respect to the mean value of the random variables. In the resulting formulae only the 'proportionality coefficients' are introduced in the resulting equation, therefore no additional computation time and memory requirement is needed. The equations are applied in analyzing the semi-infinite domain. The results obtained by the improved weighted integral method are reasonable and are in good agreement with those of the Monte Carlo simulation. To model the semi-infinite domain, the Bettess's infinite element is adopted, where the theoretical decomposition of the strain-displacement matrix to calculate the deviatoric stiffness of the semi-infinite domains is introduced. The calculated value of mean and the covariance of the displacement are revealed to be larger than those given by the finite domain assumptions which is thought to be rational and should be considered in the design of structures on semi-infinite domains.

A fundamental structural design consideration for a vehicle is the overall vibration characteristics in bending and torsion. Vibration characteristics of a vehicle system are mainly influenced by dynamic stiffness of the vehicle body structure and material and physical properties of the components attached to the vehicle body structure. The first step in satisfying this requirement is to obtain a satisfactory dynamic model of the vehicle structure. In this paper. modeling techniques of the vehicle components are presented and the effects of the vehicle components on the vibration characteristics of the vehicle are investigated,

Most of existing beam-to-column connections are reinforced symmetrically because of reverse action cause by earthquake but in the weak-earthquake region like Korea connections reinforced asymmetrically can be used. Specially, the connections between CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) column and H-shape beam can be applied by simplified lower diaphragm. The tensile capacity of Combined Cross Diaphragm for upper reinforcing was tested by simple tension test and four types for lower reinforcing; Combined Cross, None, Horizontal T-bar and Vertical Plate were tested by ANSI/AISC SSPEC 2002 loading program. Horizontal T-bar and stud bolts in vertical flat bar transmit tensile stress from bottom flange of beam to filled concrete. All test specimens were satisfied 0.01 radian of inelastic rotational requirement in ordinary moment frame of AISC seismic provision. As the results of parametric studies, simplified lower diaphragms demonstrated an outstanding strength, stiffness and plastic deformation capacity to use sufficient seismic performance in the field.
This work presents a direct integration scheme, based on a fourth order finite difference approach, for elastodynamics. The proposed scheme was chosen as an alternative for attenuating the errors due to the use of the central difference method, mainly when the time-step length approaches the critical time-step. In addition to eliminating the spurious numerical oscillations, the fourth order finite difference scheme keeps the advantages of the central difference method: reduced computer storage and no requirement of factorisation of the effective stiffness matrix in the step-by-step solution. A study concerning the stability of the fourth order finite difference scheme is presented. The Finite Element Method and the Boundary Element Method are employed to solve elastodynamic problems. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed scheme, two examples are presented and discussed at the end of this work.
