  • Even though structural performance evaluation techniques for reinforced concrete structures have been improved, there are still many problems in the evaluation of structural performance for underground structures which interacts with surrounding soils. Since experimental evaluation of underground RC structures considering the interaction with the surrounding soil medium is quite difficult to be simulated, the evaluation for underground RC structures using an analytical method can be applied very usefully, For underground structures interacted with surrounding soils, it is important to consider path-dependent RC constitutive model, soil constitutive model, and interface model between structure and soil, simultaneously. In this paper, an elastoplastic interface model which consider thickness was proposed and importance of interface model is discussed. The effects of stiffness of structures to entire underground RC system are investigated through numerical experiment for underground RC structure for different reinforcement ratios and thickness of interfaces.

  • Finite element analysis is used to study the role of interfacial properties on the bond strength of reinforcing steel to concrete. Specifically, the role played by epoxy coatings on the failure of standard beam-end specimens is explored. Experimental results show that epoxy coatings reduce bond strength, but that the effect is dependent on the bar size and the deformation pattern. The finite element model for the beam-end specimen includes representations for the deformed steel bar, the concrete, and the interfacial material. The interface elements can be varied to match the stiffness and friction properties of the interfacial material. Cracking within the concrete is represented using Hillerborg's ficticious crack model. The model is used to study important aspects or behavior observed in the tests and to provide an explanation for the effect of the various test parameters.

  • Seismic performance of reinforced concrete(RC) column bent piers to bidirectional seismic loadings was investigated experimentally. RC column bent piers represent one of the most popular forms of piers used in highway bridges. Further to series of previous experimental researches for the performance of single bridge columns subjected to seismic loadings, four column bent piers were constructed in 400 mm diameter and 2,000 mm height. Each pier has two circular supporting columns. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Bidirectional lateral loadings were applied. The test parameters included: different transverse reinforcement contents and lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcing steels. Test results indicate that lap-splices of longitudinal reinforcing steels have significantly influence on hysteretic response of column bent piers. Column capacity changed with the level of transverse confinement, and bidirectional repeated loadings induced more strength and stiffness degradation than unidirectional repeated loading.

  • Increases in strength and ductilities of steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) under direct tension and compression result in improvements of flexural behavior of reinforced steel fibrous concrete beam(RSFCB) Use of hooked steel fibers in stead of round steel fibers enhances futher the structural porperties of a beam due to their greater mechanical bond resistance compared to that of round steel fibers. Flexural strength, initial stiffness ductility and failure mechani는 of RSFCB are dependent upon material and structural parameters and among which are the volume fraction of fibers, reinforcement ratio, and casting depth of SFRC in a beam section. The flexural behavior of RSFCB's are examined experimentally in this study and some conclusions are made regarding those effects of main material and structural parameters on the overall behavior of RSFCB.

  • This research investigates the effect of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dimensions in terms of diameter on the mechanical properties (longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus) of the simulated nanocomposites by molecular dynamics (MDs) method. MDs utilized to create nanocomposite models consisting of five case studies of SWCNTs with different chiralities (5, 0), (10, 0), (15, 0), (20, 0) and (25, 0) as the reinforcement and using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as the common matrix. The results show that with increasing of SWCNTs diameter, the mechanical and physical properties increase. It is important that with the increasing of SWCNTs diameter, density, longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus, shear modulus, poisson's ratio, and bulk modulus of simulated nanocomposite from (5, 0) to (25, 0) approximately becomes 1.54, 3, 2, 1.43, 1.11 and 1.75 times more than (5, 0), respectively. Then to validate the results, the stiffness matrix is obtained by Materials studio software.

  • This paper presents the experimental study of nine pieces of reinforced concrete (RC) short columns. RC short columns were tested with cyclic loading with displacement control under the influence of constant axial load with load index of 0.2. Three columns within the tested nine columns are reference columns which have the details of the reinforcement given in the modern regulations and six of them are 150 mm and 100 mm externally collared columns. In addition to the parameter of the collar spacing, aspect ratio (as=2-1.5-1) is also considered as a parameter. The data obtained from experimental results have shown that externally collar contributes significantly to increasing the shear resistance of RC short columns and limiting the shear dominant behavior. It has been observed that the effectiveness of the externally collar increases with the decrease of the aspect ratio.

  • Sandwich structure is widely used in various fields of industry due to its excellent strength and stiffness compared with weight. We studied the sandwich structure which has honeycomb core type. We are concerned about its buckling and bending stress with respect to its side length, thickness and the height ratio of its unit core. After obtaining the buckling critical load of unit core, we applied it to the sandwich structure to observe the bending behavior. When we compared the buckling with bending stress under buckling critical load, we observed that models of which length ratio of unit honeycomb core, A, is lower than 0.04 and the thickness of core, t, is thicker than 0.09 mm, is subjected to the ultimate stress by bending before buckling.

  • This paper is aimed to investigate flexural rehabilitation effect o pre-loaded reinforced concrete beams strengthened by carbon fiber sheet. Main Test parameters are reinforcement ratio and the magnitude of pro-loading and seven test beams are analyzed rehabilitation effect by carbon fiber sheet, load-deflection, failure mode, stress of reinforcing bar by the magnitude of pre-loading. Test results show that internal force was showed pre-loaded specimens lower than no-loaded specimens during rehabilitation and changing stiffness was showed in the same was and failure mode showed brittle failure from all specimens.

  • Despite a number of advantages of reinforced earth walls over conventional concrete retaining walls, there exit concerns over long-term residual deformation when used as part of permanent structures. In view of these concerns, time-dependant deformation characteristics of geosynthetic reinforced modular block walls under sustained loads were investigated using reduced-scale model tests. The results indicated that a sustained load can yield appreciable magnitude of residual deformation, and that the magnitude of residual deformation depends on the loading characteristic as well as reinforcement stiffness.

  • The most important factor is the roadbed bearing capacity at concrete track construction. Particularly, in case of rehabilitation, it is essential to secure the uniform roadbed stiffness to prevent the irregular settlement. In this study, reinforced effect of the geotextiles is investigated which is applied to concrete track rehabilitation. The geotextiles is installed two or three layers as the condition of the ground and structure. The reinforced effect of geotextiles is confirmed by the strain gage attached on the geotextiles surface.
