This paper employs computational tools to investigate the diffraction effects in regular head waves on the added resistance and wake on the propeller plane. The objective ships are a 66,000 DWT bulk carrier and a 3,600 TEU container ship. Fixed and free to heave and pitch conditions at design speed have been taken into account. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using the finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. The computations are carried out at the same scale of the model tests. Grid and numerical wave damping zones are applied to remove unwanted wave reflection at the boundaries. The computational results are analyzed using the Fourier series. The added resistances in waves at the free condition are higher than those at the fixed condition, which are nearly constant for all wavelengths. The wake velocity in waves is higher than that in calm water, and is accelerated where the wave crest locates on the propeller plane. When the vertical motion at the stern goes upward, the wake velocity also accelerated.

In this study, the effect of hull appendages on the high-speed catamarans with reverse bow shapes is compared and analyzed by numerical analysis and circulating water tank model test. The reverse bow shape showed an improved wave shape by shifting the generation position of forward divergent wave to the stern direction and was effective in resistance and stable running posture (Kim et al., 2019). In the model test results of the running performance as the wave patterns and the change of the running posture due to the fin fitted with the inner side of the inverted bow and the interceptor, 1) Trim characteristics of the inverted bow 2) Improvement of superposition of inner wave by Fin 3) The trim control by the fin and the interceptor is considered to be effective in reducing the impact of the two hull connection decks (wetdeck).
Few reports have been written regarding the measurement of stern trawler warp tension under conditions of a full catch. This report compares the tension imposed on the warps at the time the boat begins to tow the net and the tension at the time the cod end is filled with a large quantity of fish. The structure of the otter boards and trawl net used for the experiment was the same types as used by Koyama, Sakurai, and Sumikawa (1968). The warp tension was measured with a load cell tension meter. 3) This meter continuously records the tension on a pen oscillograph. The net towing speed was measured with the CM-lA type current meter, Toho Dentan Co. Ltd., Japan. The data collected in the experiment are shown in Table 1. This table indicates that shooting No. 2 and No. 11 show a large catch volume, and the types of fish caught are shown in Table 2. The tension meter recordings when the boat began to tow the net and when the cod end was filled with a large quantity are shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. It is indicated that the barracouta Thyrsites atun (EUPHRASEN) causes little tension difference between the time before they enter the net and the time after they enter the net before hauling. Other types of fish influence tension similarly. According to these results, the warp tension measurements as recorded on a big stern trawler are more influenced by rough sea wave action than by the volume of fish caught.
In this study, the frequency transfer function of motions are predicted from the result of a full-scale seakeeping trials. Because the real sea has the characteristics of multi-directional waves,we compare the results in the one directional waves with ones in the directional waves. For calculation of the frequency transfer function in the directional waves, Takezawa's inverse estimation method was introduced and the frequency ranges were divided into three parts in order to consider following seas. The full-scale seakeeping trials was executed in the south sea of Korea using the stern trawler. Those results show that analysis method of the multi-directional waves is more reliable than that of one directional waves, and confirm the possibility of applying this method to the full-scale seakeeping trials.
A series of towing tank tests were carried out for 18 full ship models of high block coefficients. The resistance coefficients and wake distribution at the propeller plane were measured and carefully examined. Regression analysis was employed to find out the relationships with the hull form parameters. Equations for wave resistance coefficient, form factor, and nominal wake are given. A harmonic analysis of measured wake was performed to look into the influence of the local stern shape on the magnitude of fluctuating wake components at three different radii. The amplitude of wake harmonics was also expressed by regression quations. It was found that the regression formulas were very useful in estimating resistance and circumferential wake characteristics of full ship models. It was also considered that the formulas presented in this paper could be utilized in the hull form improvement in a preliminary design.
This study was carried out for the hull form development of G/T 340ton class high speed fishery patrol ship by Chosun University at the Circulating Water Channel cooperatively with Korea Maritime Service. Same size of 15knots class fishery patrol ship was selected as a parent form (Model number : CU-015), and modified fore and after body to be suitable for the operation at 20 knots. To minimize the breaking wave in the vicinity of fore body at high speed zone, high bulb nose and slender fore body hull form was chosen as an initial condition. Meanwhile, to ensure the engine room space keeping high resistance-propulsion performance, U-type stern hull form was developed.
The ship hydrodynamics in static and dynamic states were investigated using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The static case simulated a fixed ship, while the dynamic case considered a ship with free sinkage and trim using the mesh morphing technique. High speed was found to increase the wave elevation around the ship. Compared with the static case, the dynamic case seemed to generate higher waves near the bow and after the stern. The frictional resistance was found be to more dominant. However, the pressure resistance became gradually important with the increase of the ship speed. The trim and sinkage were also analyzed to characterize the ship hydrodynamics in the dynamic state.
In the field of research of seakeeping quality, much development has been made incent years using the method of calculation based on the strip theory. It is indispensable to grasp quantitatively the seaworthiness of a ship in order to draw correct design at initial stage and to perform proper operations at sea services. In this paper, the responses of three fishing vessels are calculated using statistical and spectral analyzing method to get the characteristics of the motion response. From the theoretical result we know that the significant values of the pitching and rolling motion can be signiicantly affected by not only the ship's tonnage but also the mean wave period in spite of the similar sea environment. So we can apply these expected results to the safe maneuvering and fishing operations in rough weather conditions by combining environmental circumstance with the stability condition of vessels.

This paper aims to provide the most useful method of determining an optimum LCB position and design direction of fore- and aft-body hull shape for a SLBV. It is known that the SLBV has a lower length-to-beam ratio, larger Cb and simpler stern shape designed for the installation of azimuth thrusters comparing to those of conventional LNG carriers. Due to these specific particulars of SLBV, the optimum LCB position was very different to that of conventional LNG carrier. And various approaches were applied to determine the optimum fore- and aft-body hull shape. The design direction for the optimum hull-form was evaluated as the minimization of the total resistance which includes the wave-making resistance and form-drag with numerical simulation.

Wave induced vibrations increase the fatigue and extreme loading, but this is normally neglected in design. The industry view on this is changing. Wave induced vibrations are often divided into springing and whipping, and their relative contribution to fatigue and extreme loading varies depending on ship design. When it comes to displacement vessels, the contribution from whipping on fatigue and extreme loading is particularly high for certain container vessels. A large modern design container vessel with high bow flare angle and high service speed has been considered. The container vessel was equipped with a hull monitoring system from a recognized supplier of HMON systems. The vessel has been operating between Asia and Europe for a few years and valuable data has been collected. Also model tests have been carried out of this vessel to investigate fatigue and extreme loading, but model tests are often limited to head seas. For the full scale measurements, the correlation between stress data and wind data has been investigated. The wave and vibration damage are shown versus heading and Beaufort strength to indicate general trends. The wind data has also been compared to North Atlantic design environment. Even though it has been shown that the encountered wind data has been much less severe than in North Atlantic, the extreme loading defined by IACS URS11 is significantly exceeded when whipping is included. If whipping may contribute to collapse, then proper seamanship may be useful in order to limit the extreme loading. The vibration damage is also observed to be high from head to beam seas, and even present in stern seas, but fatigue damage in general is low on this East Asia to Europe trade.
