  • The stereoselectivity of the intramolecular Diels-Alder reactions of 1 and its derivatives were investigated by ab initio calculations. The stereoselectivity mainly originates from the steric repulsion and the orbital interactions. The additional s-cis and s-trans conformations by introducing the carbonyl group at the neighbor of diene or dienophile may change the stereoselectivity, hence this kind of substitution can be utilized for stereoselectivive asymmetric synthesis.

  • Polyethylene oxide (PEO) surfaces are recognized as having an effective steric stabilization character. A theoretical scaling analysis involves the osmotic and elastic coefficients of the polymer as a function of molecular weight, in a good solvent. The calculated results show that PEO in water may exhibit the greatest flexibility among water soluble polymers, probably due to its lowest elastic contribution.

  • The geometrical structures of various isomers of hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene (HFBD), tetrafluoro-1,3-butadiene (TFBD), and difluoro-1,3-butadiene (DFBD) have been studied theoretically. Natural steric and natural resonance theory (NRT) analyses indicate that the lower energy of skew s-cis conformer of hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene than that of the s-trans conformer is originated from the strong steric repulsions between fluorine atoms particularly in the s-trans conformer. The resonance structures generated by NRT also show that the lone electron pairs of fluorine atoms effectively extend the conjugation, and the large differences in energy among the structural isomers of tetrafluoro-1,3-butadiene and difluoro-1,3-butadiene are in part attributed to the differences in the delocalization energies, in addition to the steric repulsion between fluorine atoms. Other interatomic interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, also play important roles in determination of the structures of isomers of tetrafluoro-1,3-butadiene and difluoro-1,3-butadiene.

  • The steric effect on the first order hyperpolarizability of the β-nitrostyrene derivatives has been investigated by comparing the β values and the dihedral angles between the aryl and nitroalkenyl groups. In general the β value increased with the electron-donating ability of the substituent. The larger β value for 3,4-dimethoxy-β-nitrostyrene than that for p-methoxy-β-nitrostyrene has been attributed to the lower charge transfer energy for the former. The most striking substituent effect was observed in the β-methyl-β-nitrostyrene derivatives. Thus the β values for 3,4-dimethoxy- and p-methoxy derivatives of the latter decreased to near zero, probably because of the large distortion from planarity caused by the steric repulsion between the β-methyl and the aryl groups. The larger β value for p-dimethylamino-β-methyl-β-nitrostyrene has been interpreted with an increased electron-donating ability of the substituent and increased co-planarity.

  • The gas phase pyrolyses of eight esters have been studied by MNDO-MO method. In the ethylformate pyrolysis, ${\alpha}$-methylation had a steric releasing effect whereas ${\beta}$-methylation had a steric crowding in the transition state; the latter, however, is over-compensated by a greater electronic repulsion resulting in a net steric releasing effect. Considerations of formal charges and geometrical changes involved in the activation led us to propose a pyrolysis mechanism in which a preequilibrium of acidic proton transfer is followed by the rate-limiting bond polarization of $C_{\alpha}$-O bond in a cyclic transition state.

  • Semiempirical computations using the AM1 and MNDO methods were carried out in order to elucidate allowed mechanisms for 1,3-group(X) rearrangement processes with X = $BH_2$, $CH_3$, CN, F, $NH_2$, OH, Cl and SH. The reactivity of the group migration was largely controlled by the steric effect in the 4-membered ring transition state, an antarafacial process having a greater energy barrier due to a greater steric repulsion. For the groups with lone pair electrons, the participation of the lone pair orbital is found to ease the steric effect by enabling the FMO interation with highly polarizable, high lying, lone pair electrons at relatively distant range; the involvement of lone pairs in the transition state causes an alteration of the symmetry selection rule to that of a 6-electron system with an allowed 1,3-suprafacial migration in contrast to an allowed 1,3-antarafacial migration for a 4-electron system. Various stereoelectronic aspects were analysed in some detail.

  • The effects of ortho- (R = H and CH3) and Y-substituents (Y = OCH3, CH3H and CN), which are directly attached to the carbonyl carbon, on the protonation equilibria of the para-X-substituted benzoyl derivatives, 4-X -2, 6-di-R-C6H2-C(=O)-Y, are investigated theoretically using the B3LYP method with 6-31+G* basis set. Structurally, both of the (B) and (BH+ ) forms in the species with R = H are nearly coplanar regardless of the Y-substituents implying that the steric repulsion between Y-substituent and R = H is relatively small. In the species with R = CH3 , the tortional angle (Θ) between the carbonyl moiety and aryl ring varies from zero to near right angle depending on the degree of steric repulsion between Y and R = CH3 and the resonance demand. However the reaction energies, ΔG°, for the protonation processes are more favorable for R = CH3 than for R = H due to stronger electron donating effect of R = CH3 , although the species with R = CH3 are unfavorable sterically. On the other hand, the Hammett type plots are progressively better correlated with б+ than with б values on going from Y = OCH3 to Y = CN for both species with R = H and CH3 indicating that the degree of resonance delocalization between carbonyl moiety and X-substituent is increased for a more electron accepting Y-substituent. Nevertheless the effects of R = CH3 on the magnitude of Hammett type reaction constants ( б or б+ ) are not much different from those of R = H.

  • Flexible polymers with densely grafted side chains adopt the shape of cylindrical brushes, because the steric repulsion of the side chains overcomes the entropic restoring force of the main chain. Combined light-and neutron scattering measurements elucidate the extend of main chain and side chain stretching as function of side chain length. The application of cylindrical brushes as molecular actuators in response to external stimuli which is discussed.

  • Researches on the drying of particle/polymer suspensions receive attentions in technical applications such as manufacturing display and batteries. In this study, the effect of polymers on drying behavior of silica/poly(vinyl alcohol) suspension was investigated in terms of suspension stability and stress development during drying. The effect of polymer adsorption was studied by changing pH. More strongly flocculated suspension with lower pH became more dispersed and close-packed film after drying. Evaluation of potential energy allows us to suggest that the adsorbed polymers which bridge the particles introduce steric repulsion and lead flocculated suspension to dispersed film. When the effect of adsorption kinetics was studied by changing the mixing time, the adsorption amount, characteristic stress and dried film density showed a similar behavior in the form of with a single characteristic time. It implies that the drying process can be determined by simple characteristic equation with a single time constant.
