A new High Resolution Geometry or HRG imaging instrument is developed by CNES to be carried on-board SPOT 5. The HRG instrument offers a higher ground resolution than that of the HRV/HRVIR on SPOT 1 - 4 satellites. The field width of HRG is 60 km, same as SPOT constellation. With two HRG instruments, a maximum swath of 120 km at 5 m resolution can be achieved. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from satellite stereo images scores over conventional methods of DEM generation using topographic maps and aerial photographs. This global availability of satellite images allows for quicker data processing for an equivalent area. In this study, a HRG stereo images of SPOT 5 over JECHEON has been used with Leica Photogrammetry Suite OrthoBASE Pro tool for the creation of a digital elevation model (DEM). The extracted DEM was compared to the reference DEM obtained from the contours of digital topographic map.
An active research area in computer vision, stereo matching is aimed at obtaining three-dimensional (3D) information from a stereo image pair captured by a stereo camera. To extract accurate 3D information, a number of studies have examined stereo matching algorithms that employ adaptive support weight. Among them, the adaptive census transform (ACT) algorithm has yielded a relatively strong matching capability. The drawbacks of the ACT, however, are that it produces low matching accuracy at the border of an object and is vulnerable to noise. To mitigate these drawbacks, this paper proposes and analyzes the features of an improved stereo matching algorithm that not only enhances matching accuracy but also is also robust to noise. The proposed algorithm, based on the ACT, adopts the truncated absolute difference and the multiple sparse windows method. The experimental results show that compared to the ACT, the proposed algorithm reduces the average error rate of depth maps on Middlebury dataset images by as much as 2% and that is has a strong robustness to noise.

In this paper, we propose a stereo vision based monitoring concept for passenger's safety on railroad platform. In general, basic concept of stereo image processing technique uses the correlations between left and right images, and extracts additional distance information. It provides easy removal of ambient illumination changes, which has been difficult to achieve with conventional 2D based image processing technique. In the paper, we present developed stereo camera and stereo vision based detection algorithm in order to monitor possible accidents at platform area, and verified the detection performance of proposed system with experimental results.
In this paper, we propose an algorithm for initializing a target vehicle detection, tracking the vehicle and estimating the distance from it on the stereo images acquired from a forward-looking stereo camera mounted on a road driving vehicle. The process of vehicle detection extracts road region using lane recognition and searches vehicle feature from road region. The distance of tracking vehicle is estimated by TSS correlogram matching from stereo Images. Through the simulation, this paper shows that the proposed method segments, matches and tracks vehicles robustly from image sequences obtained by moving stereo camera.
Animated anaglyph is the most cost-effective method for 3D stereo visualization of virtual or actual 3D geo-based data model. Unlike 3D anaglyph scene generation using paired epipolar images, the main data sets of this study is the multi-typed 3D feature model containing 3D shaped objects, DEM and satellite imagery. For this purpose, a prototype implementation for 3D animated anaglyph using OpenGL API is carried out, and virtual 3D feature modeling is performed to demonstrate the applicability of this anaglyph approach. Although 3D features are not real objects in this stage, these can be substituted with actual 3D feature model with full texture images along all facades. Currently, it is regarded as the special viewing effect within 3D GIS application domains, because just stereo 3D viewing is a part of lots of GIS functionalities or remote sensing image processing modules. Animated anaglyph process can be linked with real-time manipulation process of 3D feature model and its database attributes in real world problem. As well, this approach of feature-based 3D animated anaglyph scheme is a bridging technology to further image-based 3D animated anaglyph rendering system, portable mobile 3D stereo viewing system or auto-stereo viewing system without glasses for multi-viewers.

Vectorization is currently the main method in feature collection (extraction) during digital mapping using UAV-Photogrammetry. However, this method is time consuming and prone to gross elevation errors when extracted from a DSM (Digital Surface Model), because three-dimensional feature coordinates are vectorized separately: plane information from an orthophoto and height from a DSM. Consequently, the demand for stereo plotting method capable of acquiring three- dimensional spatial information simultaneously is increasing. However, this method requires an expensive equipment, a Digital Photogrammetry Workstation (DPW), and the technology itself is still incomplete. In this paper, we evaluated the accuracy of low-cost stereo plotting system, Menci's StereoCAD, by analyzing its three-dimensional spatial information acquisition. Images were taken with a FC 6310 camera mounted on a Phantom4 pro at a 90 m altitude with a Ground Sample Distance (GSD) of 3 cm. The accuracy analysis was performed by comparing differences in coordinates between the results from the ground survey and the stereo plotting at check points, and also at the corner points by layers. The results showed that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) at check points was 0.048 m for horizontal and 0.078 m for vertical coordinates, respectively, and for different layers, it ranged from 0.104 m to 0.127 m for horizontal and 0.086 m to 0.092 m for vertical coordinates, respectively. In conclusion, the results showed 1: 1,000 digital topographic map can be generated using a stereo plotting system with UAV images.
This study investigates the geometric and spatial image quality analysis of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair. KOMPSAT-3A is, the latest satellite of KOMPSAT family, a Korean earth observation satellite operating in optical bands. A KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was taken on 23 November, 2015 with 0.55 m ground sampling distance over Terrassa area of Spain. The convergence angle of KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair was estimated as $58.68^{\circ}$. The investigation was assessed through the evaluation of the geopositioning analysis, image quality estimation and the accuracy of automatic Digital Surface Model (DSM) generation and compared with those of KOMPSAT-3 stereo pair with the convergence angle of $44.80^{\circ}$ over the same area. First, geopositioning accuracy was tested with initial rational polynomial coefficients (RPCs) and after compensating the biases of the initial RPCs by manually collected ground control points. Then, regarding image quality, relative edge response was estimated for manually selected points visible from two stereo pairs. Both of the initial and bias-compensated positioning accuracy and the quality assessment result expressed that KOMPSAT-3A images showed higher performance than those of KOMPSAT-3 images. Finally, the accuracy of DSMs generated from KOMPSAT-3A and KOMPSAT-3 stereo pairs were examined with respect to the reference LiDAR-derived DSM. The various DSMs were generated over the whole coverage of individual stereo pairs with different grid spacing and over three types of terrain; flat, mountainous and urban area. Root mean square errors of DSM from KOMPSAT-3A pair were larger than those for KOMPSAT-3. This seems due to larger convergence angle of the KOMPSAT-3A stereo pair.

Imbalances in focus, luminance and color between stereo Pairs could cause disparity vector estimation error and increment of transmission data. If the distribution of errors in residual image is large, it may influence to lowering of compression performance. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient balancing method between stereo pairs to reduce the effect. For this, we registrated stereo images using a FFT based method to consider the pixels in the occluded region, we eliminated the pixels of blocks which has large error of disparity vector estimation in balancing function estimation. The balancing function has estimated using histogram specification, local information of target image and residual image between stereo images. Experiments show that the proposed method is effective in error distribution, PSNR and disparity vector estimation. We expect that our method can be improving compression efficiency in stereo coding system.
Human visual attention system has a remarkable ability to interpret complex scenes with the ease and simplicity by selecting or focusing on a small region of visual field without scanning the whole images. In this paper, a novel feature map generation and integration method for attention based visual information processing system is proposed. The depth information obtained from a stereo pair of images is exploited as one of spatial visual features to form a set of topographic feature maps in our approach. Comparative experiments show that correct detection rate of visual attention regions improves by utilizing depth feature compared to the case of not using depth feature.
This study addresses a photogrammetric approach to generate Mars topographic products from mapping data of Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). High-resolution stereo images and laser altimetry data collected from the MGS mission are combined and processed to produce Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and orthoimages. First, altimeter data is registered to high resolution images and considerable registration offset (around 325 m) is discovered on high resolution stereo images. Altimetry data, exterior orientation elements of the camera and conjugate points are used for bundle adjustment to solve this mis-registration and detennine the ground coordinates. The mis-registration of altimetry data are effectively eliminated after the bundle adjustment. Using the adjusted exterior orientation the ground coordinates of conjugate points are detennined. A sufficient number of corresponding points collected through image matching and their precise 3-D ground coordinates are used to generate DEM and orthoimages. A posteriori standard deviations of ground points after bundle adjustment indicate the accuracy of OEM generated in this study. This paper addresses the photogrammetric procedure: the registration of altimetry data to stereo pair images, the bundle adjustment and the evaluation, and the generation of OEM and orthoimages.
