  • The purpose of this study was to develop a career education program linked to home economics in middle school to improve adolescents' ability to respond to the rapidly changing future society. The research procedure was conducted in four steps: Analysis, Design, Development, and Evaluation. In the analysis step, related prior studies were analyzed to identify the units and contents that linked home economics and career education. In the design step, learning topics and contents according to the design thinking process were selected and the overall program process was designed to cultivate entrepreneurship based on the textbook analysis results. In the development step, the goals and achievement standards of school career education linked to home economics were set for each class, and a total of eight teaching and learning plans, twenty-three types of teaching and learning materials, and expert validity verification questionnaires were developed. In the evaluation step, the validity of the developed program was verified by nine experts. The developed program was verified for overall programs, and the validity of the program was 0.94. It is expected that the career education program linked to home economics will contribute to foster the adolescents' entrepreneurship so they can design their future on their own and allow them to manage their life proactively.

  • Lateral loading due to wind or earthquake is a major factor that affects the design of high-rise buildings. This paper highlights the problems associated with the seismic design of high-rise buildings in regions of strong wind and moderate seismicity. Seismic response analysis and performance evaluation were conducted for wind-designed concentrically braced steel high-rise buildings in order to check the feasibility of designing them per elastic seismic design criterion (or strength and stiffness solution) in such regions. Review of wind design and pushover analysis results indicated that wind-designed high-rise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seismic capacity due to the overstrength resulting from the wind serviceability criterion. The strength demand-to-capacity study showed that, due to the wind design overstrength, high-rise buildings with a slenderness ratio of larger than four or five can elastically withstand even the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) with the seismic performance level of immediate occupancy under the limited conditions of this study. A step-by-step seismic design procedure per the elastic criterion that is directly usable for practicing design engineers is also recommended.

  • In this paper, we propose an interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) to implement an automated 2D avatar synthesis. The IGA technique is capable of expressing user's personality in the avatar synthesis by using the user's response as a candidate for the fitness value. Our suggested IGA method is applied to creating avatars automatically. Unlike the previous works, we introduce the concepts of 'hidden population', as well as 'primitive avatar' and 'simplified genotype', which are used to overcome the shortcomings of IGA such as human fatigue or reliability, and reasonable rates of convergence with a less number of iterations. The procedure of designing avatar models consists of two steps. The first step is to detect the facial feature points and the second step is to create the subjectively optimal avatars with diversity by embedding user's preference, intuition, emotion, psychological aspects, or a more general term, KANSEI. Finally, the combined processes result in human-friendly avatars in terms of both genetic optimality and interactive GUI with reliability.

  • A finite element computational procedure for the accurate analysis of quasistatic thermorheological complex structures response is developed. The geometrical nonlinearity, arising from large displacements and rotations (but small strains), is accounted for by the total Lagrangian description of motion. The Schapery's nonlinear single-integral viscoelastic constitutive model is modified for a time-stress-temperature-dependent behavior. The nonlinear thermo-viscoelastic constitutive equations are incrementalized leading to a recursive relationship and thereby the resulting finite element equations necessitate data storage from the previous time step only, and not the entire deformation history. The Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is employed to obtain a converged solution for the non-linear finite element equations. The developed numerical model is verified with the previously published works and a good agreement with them is found. The applicability of the developed model is demonstrated by analyzing two examples with different thermal/mechanical loading histories.

  • The paper describes the efficient and agile design methodology for the smart phone application, so called the App. Despite the number of smart phones as well as their applications is rapidly being increased recently, the smart and easy methodology for App development is not well developed and not matured in use yet. Since the App is converted to programs or contents from the new ideas, especially, it is important to design and implement the App rapidly and systematically. In order to resolve this problem, we adopt the UI centered approach first of all, emphasizing user-efficient utilization of applications. And we also try to build the whole process in streamlined procedure, making each step reasonable, and the input and output for the step well organized. The design methodology described here is evaluated by designing popular sample application, Scheduler, and also compared with some well-known software design methodologies.

  • In parameter design, Taguchi's stated objective is to find the setting of product or process design parameters that minimize average quadratic loss-that is, the average squared deviation of the response from its target value. Yet in practice to choose the settings of design parameters he maximizeds a set of measures called signal-to-noise(SN) ratios. In general, Taguchi gave no justification for the use the SN ratios and no explanation of why the two-step procedure that he recommened will minimize average loss. The purpose of this study is comparing and analyzing of performance statistics by Leon et al(PerMIA), Box(Transformation theory), Vining & Myers(Dual Response Systems) and Taguchi(Signal-to-Noise ratios).

  • The insertion of steel braces has become a common technique to limit the deformability of steel framed buildings subjected to wind loads. However, when this technique is inadequate to keep floor accelerations within acceptable levels of human comfort, dampers placed in series with the steel braces can be adopted. To check the effectiveness of braces equipped with viscoelastic (VEDs) or friction dampers (FRDs), a numerical investigation is carried out focusing attention on a three-bay fifteen-storey steel framed building with K-braces. More precisely, three alternative structural solutions are examined for the purpose of controlling wind-induced vibrations: the insertion of additional diagonal braces; the insertion of additional diagonal braces equipped with dampers; the insertion of both additional diagonal braces and dampers supported by the existing K-braces. Additional braces and dampers are designed according to a simplified procedure based on a proportional stiffness criterion. A dynamic analysis is carried out in the time domain using a step-by-step initial-stress-like iterative procedure. Along-wind loads are considered at each storey assuming the time histories of the wind velocity, for a return period $T_r=5$ years, according to an equivalent wind spectrum technique. The behaviour of the structural members, except dampers, is assumed linear elastic. A VED and an FRD are idealized by a six-element generalized model and a bilinear (rigid-plastic) model, respectively. The results show that the structure with damped additional braces can be considered, among those examined, the most effective to control vibrations due to wind, particularly the floor accelerations. Moreover, once the stiffness of the additional braces is selected, the VEDs are slightly more efficient than the FRDs, because they, unlike the FRDs, dissipate energy also for small amplitude vibrations.

  • The current rod internal pressure criterion permits fuel rods to operate with internal pressures in excess of system pressure only if internal overpressure does not cause the diametral gap enlargement. In this study, the generic allowable internal gas pressure not violating this criterion is estimated as a function of rod power. The results show that the generic allowable internal gas pressure decreases linearly with the increase of rod power. Application of the generic allowable internal gas pressure for the rod internal pressure design criterion will result in the simplication of the current design procedure for checking the diametral gap enlargement caused by internal overpressure because according to the current design procedure the cladding creepout rate should be compared with the fuel swelling rate at each axial node at each time step whenever internal pressure exceeds the system pressure.

  • Desalination plant ships have been recently regarded as one of the probable solutions for drought seasons in many countries. Because desalination plants should be mounted on the desalination ships and special purpose storages such as salty waste water tanks are necessary, onboard and compartment arrangements would be distinguished from those of other conventional commercial ships. This paper introduces some basic design procedure including resistance/propulsion and seakeeping performances. The ship lines were improved step by step after modification of the ship lines and verification of resistance/propulsion performances using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). After finalization of the ship lines, the seakeeping performance was also evaluated to check motion behaviors and drive wave-induced loads such as the wave shear force and bending moment. It was proved that the predicted long-term vertical wave shear force and bending moment were significantly less than the rule-based ones, thus it is expected that the deliverables of this study will reduce the construction cost of desalination plant ships.
