  • Solar thermal reactor was studied for hydrogen production with a two step thermochemical cycle including T-R(Thermal Reduction) step and W-D(Water Decomposition) step. NiFe2O4 and Fe3O4 supported by monoclinic ZrO2 were used as a catalyst device and Ni powder was used for decreasing the T-R step reaction temperature. Maintaining a temperature level of about $1100^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$, for 2-step thermochemical reaction, is important for obtaining maximum performance of hydrogen production. The controller was designed for adjusting high temperature solar thermal energy heating the foam-device coated with nickel- ferrite powder. A Pill temperature control system was designed based on 2-step thermochemical reaction experiment data(measured concentrated solar radiation and the temperature of foam device during experiment). The cycle repeated 5 times, ferrite conversion rate are 4.49~29.97% and hydrogen production rate is 0.19~1.54mmol/g-ferrite. A temperature controller was designed for increasing the number of reaction cycles related with the amount of produced hydrogen.

  • We propose an optical encryption/decryption technique for a security system based on 2-step phase-shifting digital holography. Phase-shilling digital holography is used for recording phase and amplitude information on a CCD device. 2-step phase-shifting is implemented by moving the PZT mirror with phase step of 0 or ${\pi}/2$. The binary data and the key are expressed with random code and random phase patterns. The digital hologram is a Fourier transform hologram and is recorded on CCD with 256 gray level quantization. We remove the DC term of the digital hologram fur data reconstruction, which is essential to reconstruct the original binary input data/image. The error evaluation fer the decrypted binary data is analyzed. One of errors is a quantization error in detecting the hologram intensity on CCD, and the other is generated from decrypting the data with the incorrect key. The technique using 2-step phase-shifting holography is more efficient than a 4-step method because 2-step phase-shifting holography system uses less data than the 4-step method for data storage or transmission. The simulation shows that the proposed technique gives good results fur the optical encryption of binary information.

  • This paper evaluates the equalization performance of FC-MMA adaptive equalization algorithm by the fixed step size that is used for the minimization of the intersymbol interference which occurs in the time dispersive communication channel. The FC-MMA has a fast convergence speed in order to adapts the new environment more rapidly in case of the time varying charateristics and the abnormal situation like as outage of the communication channel. But the algorithms operates in adative method, convegence speed is depend on fixed step size for adaptation. For this situation, its performance was evaluated by changing the step size value, the residual isi and maximum distortion and MSE performance index which means the convergence characteristics are widely adapted in the adaptive equalizer, SER were applied. As a result of computer simulation, the large step size can improves the convergence speed for reaching the steady state, but has a poor performance compared to small step size in residual values after steady state. The research result shows that the FC-MMA algorithm is applied the large step size for rapidly reaching the steady state in initial time, then adjust the small step size after reaching the steady state for reducing the residual values for equalization.

  • In this study, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on the perturb and observe (P&O) method with variable step size is proposed to improve the dynamic response characteristic of MPPT, using the existing P&O method. The proposed algorithm, which we verified by simulation and experiment, can track the maximum power point (MPP) through duty control and consisted of three operation modes, namely, constant voltage mode, fast mode, and variable step mode. When the insolation is constant, the voltage variation of the operating point at the MPP is reduced through the step size reduction of the duty in the variable step mode. Consequently, the vibration of the operating point is reduced, and the power generation efficiency is increased. When the insolation changes, the duty and the photovoltaic (PV) voltage are kept constant through the constant voltage mode. The operating point then rapidly tracks the new MPP through the fast-mode operation at the end of the insolation change. When the MPP is reached, the operation is changed to the variable step mode to reduce the duty step size and track the MPP. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation and experiment of a PV system composed of a PV panel and a boost converter.

  • S-STEP is a small SAR satellite mission that monitors time-limited emergency targets and military anomalies in areas of interest, achieving the average revisit in less than 30 minutes by deploying a constellation of 32 satellites in low orbit at an altitude of 510 km. The mission operation mode of S-STEP is divided into normal mode, observation mode, communication mode, and orbit maintenance mode. Further,, the attitude control mode is subdivides into initial detumbling, sun pointing, target pointing, ground station pointing, and thrust direction maintenance. Based on the preliminary mission operational scenario and the satellite's characteristics, this study analyzed the attitude control performance during initial detumbling and observation modes. It verifies that each mode's attitude control accuracy requirements within the time allotted by the scenario of the S-STEP achieved.

  • For electrode stability and the electrochemical performance of the Li-ion cell, it is essential that the active ingredients and unique additives in the polymer binder be well dispersed with the solvent-based slurry. The efficient procedure used to create the slurry affects the rheological characteristics of the electrode slurry. When successively adding different steps of Nmethyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent to the cathode composition, it is evenly disseminated. The electrochemical performance of the Li-ion cells and the electrodes made with slurry formed by single step and multiple steps of addition of NMP solvent are examined. To preform rheological properties of cathode electrode slurry on Ni-rich Lithium Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminum Oxide (LiNi0.80Co0.15Al0.05) (NCA). Also, we investigate different step addition of electrode formation and mechanical strength characterization like peel strength. According to the EIS study, a multi-step electrode slurry has lower internal resistance than a single-step electrode slurry, which results in better electrical characteristics and efficiency. Further, microstructure of electrodes is obtained electrochemical performance in the 18650 cylindrical cells with targeted capacity of 1.5 Ah. The slurry of electrodes prepared by single step and multiple steps of addition of NMP solvent and its effect on the fabrication of 1.5 Ah cells. A three-step solvent addition on slurry has been found to be a lower internal resistance than a single-step electrode slurry as confirmed by the EIS analysis, yielding improved electrical properties and efficiency.

  • Investigating Backward-Facing Step(BFS) flow is important in that it is a representative case for separation flows in various engineering flow systems. There have been a wide range of experimental, theoretical, and numerical studies to investigate the flow characteristics over BFS, such as flow separation, reattachment length and recirculation zone. However, most of such previous studies were concentrated only on the perpendicular step angle. In this study, several numerical investigations on the flow pattern over BFS with various step angles (10° ~ 90°) and expansion ratios (1.48, 2 and 3.27) under different Reynolds numbers (5000 ~ 64000) were carried out, mainly focused on the reattachment length. The numerical simulations were performed using an open source 3D CFD software, OpenFOAM, in which the velocity profiles and turbulence intensities are calculated by RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation) and 3D LES (Large Eddy Simulation) turbulence models. Overall, it shows a good agreement between simulations and the experimental data by Ruck and Makiola (1993). In comparison with the results obtained from RANS and 3D LES, it was shown that 3D LES model can capture much better and more details on the velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, and reattachment length behind the step for relatively low Reynolds number(Re < 11000) cases. However, the simulation results by both of RANS and 3D LES showed very good agreement with the experimental data for the high Reynolds number cases(Re > 11000). For Re > 11000, the reattachment length is no longer dependent on the Reynolds number, and it tends to be nearly constant for the step angles larger than 30°.) Based on the calibrated and validated numerical simulations, several additional numerical simulations were also conducted with higher Reynolds number and another expansion ratio which were not considered in the experiments by Ruck and Makiola (1993).

  • Background: Landing from a step or stairs is a basic motor skill but high incidence of lateral ankle sprain has been reported during landing with inverted foot. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the effect of landing height and visual feedback on the kinematics of landing and supporting lower limbs before and after the touch down and the ground reaction force(GRF)s. Methods: Eighteen healthy females were voluntarily participated in landing from the lower (20 cm) and the higher (40 cm) steps with and without visual feedback. To minimize the time to plan the movement, the landing side was randomly announced as a starting signal. Effects of the step height, the visual feedback, or the interaction on the landing duration, the kinematic variables and the GRFs at each landing event point were analyzed. Results: With eyes blindfolded, the knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion on landing side significantly decreased before and after the touch down. However, there was no significant effect of landing height on the anticipatory kinematics on the landing side. After the touch down, the landings from the higher step increased the knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion on both landing and supporting sides. From the higher steps, the vertical GRF, anterior GRF, and lateral GRF increased. No interaction between step height and visual feedback was significant. Conclusion: Step height and visual feedback affected the landing limb kinematics independently. Visual feedback affected on the landing side while step height altered the supporting side prior to the touch down. After the touch down, the step height had greater influence on the lower limb kinematics and the GRFs than the visual feedback. Findings of this study can contribute to understanding of the injury mechanisms and preventing the lateral ankle sprain.
