This study was conducted to understand the influences of forest structure on throughfall, stemflow and interception loss. The study plots included the natural old-growth deciduous, Pinus koraiensis and Abies holophylla forests in Gwangneung and the rehabilitated young mixed forest in Yangju, Gyeonggido. The Pinus koraiensis and Abies hotophylla had been planted in 1976. The rehabilitated young mixed forest had been established to control erosion in 1974. Total and net rainfall were monitored from March, 2003 to October, 2004. Tipping bucket rain gauge recorded total rainfall. Throughfall and stemflow were measured by custom-made tipping bucket and CR10X data logger at each $10m{\times}10m$ plots at intervals of 30 minutes. Interception loss in the Pinus koraiensis plot were most as 37.2% of total rainfall and least as 22.6% in the rehabilitated young mixed forest. Stemflow in the rehabilitated young mixed forest was 10.7% of total rainfall and stemflow in the Pinus koraiensis plot was 2.4%. The average throughfall ratio ranged from 66% to 77% depending on the canopy coverage. The relationship of stemflow and total rainfall represented in a linear regression equation though the variation of data was large. The ratio of stemflow-conversion was 2% of total rainfall in the Pinus koraiensis plot and 12% in the rehabilitated young mixed forest, respectively. The stem storage of the natural old-growth deciduous was the largest of 0.21 mm whereas that of the Pinus koraiensis plot was the least of 0.003 mm. A deciduous forest produced stemflow more than a coniferous forest due to a smooth bark and steeply angled branches. Interception loss of all study plots increased linearly as total rainfall increased. The distribution of interception loss data related in total rainfall became wider in a deciduous forest than a coniferous. It resulted from seasonality of leaf area index in a deciduous forest. As considered above results, it was confirmed that there were great differences of throughfall, stemflow and interception loss depending on forest stand structures. The simulation model for predicting interception loss must have parameters such as forest stand characteristics and LAI in order to describe the influence of forest structure on interception loss.

This experiment was conducted to characterize the vertical transport trend of dissolved elements through throughfall, stemflow, effluent from Ao layer, and leachate out of soil profile on Pinus koraiensis stand in Experimental Forest of Kyunghee University, located in Kwangju, Kyunggi province for 12 months from July, 1998 to Jun, 1999. In addition, we investigated the content of dissolved elements and the factors influencing the water chemistry concentrations separately collected from the field. Water movement in the process of throughfall and stemflow from precipitation, and rainfall leached from Ao layer into soil water was governed by concentration of through fall, precipitation, rainfall intensity, seasonal variation, and other factors. Also, smaller changes of pH in soil water than that of dissolved elements in soil water could contribute buffer capacity, as well as balancing the concentration between cations and anions.
We examined water flux, concentrations and contents in nutrients in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution in natural deciduous hardwood forest(Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica) in Chunchon, Kangwon Province. The volume of throughfall was 2∼3% higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. monglica while volume of stemflow, Ao, A and B soil solution was 10∼15% higher in Q. variabilis compared to Q. monglica. Concentrations of K/sup +/ increased in throughfall H while concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/, Mg/sup 2+/ and NO₃/sup -/ increased in Ao soil solution. The former might be related to the canopy leaching and the latter related to leaching and nitrification in Ao horizon. Nutrient concentrations in throughfall, Ao, A and B soil solution decreased with increasing amount of water and especially the decreases in concentrations of K/sup +/, Mg/sup 2+/ and Cl/sup -/ were significant. Nutrient concentrations of Ca/sup 2+/ in Ao soil solution was 1.5 times higher in Q. variabilis than in Q. mongolica. However, there were no significant nutrient concentration differences in throughfall, stemflow and A and B soil solution between the two forest types. Stemflow was less than 10% of total water volume (throughfall + stemflow) to the forest floor, and contribution of stemflow to nutrient cycling seemed to be low in the study forest.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of forest management practices on pH and electrical conductivity to get fundamental information on water purification capacity after forest operation. Rainfall, throughfall and stemflow were sampled at the study sites which consist of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis in Gwangreung Experimental Forest for S months from May to November 1999. Mean pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event was higher in management (thinning and pruning) sites of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands than nonmanagement site of Abies holophylla and Pinus koraiensis stands. In addition, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event showed similar trends which are higher pH in the management sites compared with the non- management sites. This result indicates that managements such as thinning and pruning improve tree butler capacity of rainfall pH. According to the linear regression results, pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.735${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+1.849 ($R^2\;=\;0.82$) and pH of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites= 0.863${\times}$pH of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites +1.0242 ($R^2\;=\;0.87$). In case of stemflow pH, pH of the sternflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.53${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non- management sites+2.7709 ($R^2\;=\;0.64$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.5854${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+2.7045 ($R^2\;=\;0.65$). Electrical conductivity (EC) of the throughfall of the beginning and total amount of the event was highest in non- management site in Abies holophylla, followed by management sites in fsies Abies holophylla, non-management site in Pinus koraiensis, and management sites in Pinus koraiensis stands, respectively. According to the linear regression results, EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in non-managementsites = 0.4045${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+26.766 ($R^2\;=\;0.69$) and EC of the throughfall of the total amount of the event in management sites = 0.6002${\times}$EC of the throughfall of the beginning of the event in management sites+8.0184 ($R^2\;=\;0.54$). In case of stemflow EC, EC of thestemflow of the total amount of the event in non-management sites = 0.6298${\times}$EC of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in non-management sites+11.582 ($R^2\;=\;0.72$) and pH of the stemflow of the total amount of the event in management sites =0.602${\times}$pH of the stemflow of the beginning of the event in management sites+20.783($R^2\;=\;0.49$).

The throughfall, stemflow and precipitation interception during the period of May to November 1995 were compared between three stands of Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and Quercus species stand growing at Kwangju-Gun, Kyunggi-Do. The total amount of precipitation during the period in the study area was 1,821mm, higher than average precipitation. The amount of interception showed 21.8% of the total precipitation in Quercus stand, whereas 15.7 and 19.4 in P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis stands, respectively. Precipitation leached on forest floor was occupied mainly by throughfall for all the stands, and it was specially higher in P. koraiensis stand. The amount of stemflow was appeared higher in Quercus stand(5.0%) than P. koraiensis stand(1.1%) or L. leptolepis stand(1.1%). The relationship between throughfall or stemflow and total precipitation in all the stands were highly significant.

The major objective of this study was to analyze the difference of the chemical characteristics of acid deposition in Quercus forests in Korea and Japan. The pH values of rainfall at the experimental forest of Kangwon National University (KS site) were higher than those at the Foresta Hills in Japan (JP site), and all chemical contents of throughfall and stemflow were much higher than those of rainfall in Quercus forest stands at the KS and JP site. The pH values, $Ca^{2+}$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentration of throughfall and stemflow at the KS site showed seasonal variation. While at the JP site, the same pattern was shown in the pH values of throughfall and stemflow, however, did not show any difference among seasons. Also, the annual input of all nutrients in these two contrasting forests varied seasonally. These results can be used to predict the amounts of air pollutant that are washed off and leached by the rainfall and Yellow Sand (Asian dust), including NOx and SOx acid pollutants transported easterly from China in the spring. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify the inputs of dry and wet deposition throughout a full year to gain a more complete understanding of the effects of acid deposition on the nutrient cycles in these forest ecosystems.
This study investigated pH values and EC changes of rainfall and stemflow were investigated for 5 tree species such as Pinus koraiensis, P. densiflora, Larix leptolepis, Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica in the Experiment Forests, College of Forest Science, Kangwon National University. The results were as follows; 1. Mean month pH values of stemflow were much lower than those of rainfall. Among tree species, pH values of the coniferous such as P. densiflora, P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis were lower those of the deciduous such as Q. mongolica and Q. variabilis. Mean month pH values of stemflow ranged from 3.23 to 5.03 (average : 4.23) for P. koraiensis, 3.57 to 5.16 (average : 4.36) for P. densiflora, 3.41 to 6.69 (average : 4.45) for L. leptolepis, 3.86 to 6.11 (average : 4.70) for Q. variabilis and 4.39 to 6.13 (average : 5.18) for Q. mongolica. 2. Mean month EC of the coniferous species was 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of the deciduous species. Mean month EC of stemflow for P. koraiensis, P. densiflora, L. leptolepis, Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica was ranged from 29.0 to $946.5{\mu}S/cm$(average : $258.5{\mu}S/cm$), 18.6 to $907.5{\mu}S/cm$(average : $220.3{\mu}S/cm$), 27.0 to $918.0{\mu}S/cm$(average : $216.2{\mu}S/cm$), 16.5 to $301.6{\mu}S/cm$(average : $125.4{\mu}S/cm$) and $25.2{\sim}225.7{\mu}S/cm$(average : $101.5{\mu}S/cm$), respectively. 3. Average pH values and EC were highly variable according to season. Average pH values appeared lower in spring than those in summer and autumn, but EC appeared higher in spring than those lower in summer and autumn. 4. According to precipitation, there was little difference in and pH values of stemflow the coniferous and the deciduous showed low pH valuess in the case of less than 50mm precipitation. However, EC of stemflow showed a difference depending on the precipitation, and EC of the coniferous and the deciduous was high more than $100{\mu}S/cm$ at the precipitation of less than 50mm.
The objective of this study was to estimate throughfall, stemflow, interception loss and net rainfall in relation to rainfall interception, and to understand the factors affecting interception process at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand in the Research Forests of Seoul National University, located in Choosan, Kwangyang, Chollanamdo. 1. The gross rainfall during the period of field observation was 3,107.6mm(average 1,035.9mm/year). Most of the daily rainfall intensity was under 30mm, which was 90% in 1992, 81% in 1993 and 88% in 1994. 2. In this study the throughfall, stemflow, interception loss and net rainfall were expressed separately as a function of gross rainfall. The overall throughfall collected during the period of field observation was 2,432.5mm(78.3%) at Pinus taeda stand and 2,699.6mm at Pinus densiflora stand, out of total rainfall of 3107.6mm. The canopy storage capacity, which was determined by the prediction equation between gross rainfall and throughfall was 1.1mm at Pinus taeda stand and 1.3mm at Pinus densiflora stand. 3. The sums of stemflow from measurement of total rainfall at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand was 227.3mm(7.3%) and 62.7mm(2.0%), respectively. The minimum rainfall causing stemflow was estimated as 7.2mm at Pinus taeda stand and 1.9mm at Pinus densiflora stand. 4. Interception loss accounted for 447.8mm(14.4%) at Pinus taeda stand and 345.3mm(11.1%) at Pinus densiflorra stand. 5. Net rainfall was 2,659.8mm(85.6%) at Pinus taeda stand and 2,762.3mm(88.9%) at Pinus densiflora stand. 6. The rates of throughfall and stemflow increased with increasing the gross rainfall. However, the amounts of throughfall and the stemflow were constant above 30mm at Pinus taeda stand and 50mm at Pinus densiflora stand. The rates of interception loss decreased with increasing the gross rainfall. However, the amount of interception loss was constant above 50mm at Pinus taeda stand and Pinus densiflora stand.
The objective of this study was to compare acid-neutralizing and buffering capacity of four tree species against soil acidification by acid rain. About 30-year-old forests composed of Pinus rigida, Alnus hirsuta, Quercus mongolica, and Liriodendron tulipifera in a provincial experimental forest located 15km east from Banwol Industrial Complex in Kyonggido were used in this study. Incident precipitation, throughfall and stemflow, and soil samples were collected from May to September, 1996 to analyze their pH and canon concentrations. Internal leaf pH, external acid neutralizing capacity(ENC), and buffering capacity index(BCI) of leaves were also determined. The incident precipitation showed an average pH of 4.56, with the percentage of acid rain incidents being 74%. The average soil pH of the study area was 4.15. The pH of throughfall and stemflow in all four species was higher than that of precipitation except that of the stemflow of Pinus rigida which showed a pH of 3.73. The throughfall of Liriodendron tulipifera showed the highest pH of 5.38. The pH of throughfall and stemflow showed a positive correlation and no correlation, respectively, with precipitations. The most abundant cation in precipitation was Ca. The canon concentraions in throughfall and stemflow decreased in the following order of K, Na, Ca, and Mg. Cation concentrations in stemflow were highest in Lirioendron tulipifera and lowest in Pines rigida. Nutrient leaching from above ground increased with decreasing pH of precipitation. The pH of stemflow showed a positive correlation with ENC and BCI. The highest values in ENC, BCI, soil pH, and soil cation concentrations were observed in Liriodendron tulipifera, while the lowest values were obtained in Pinus rigida, It was concluded that Liriodendron tulipifera had highest neutralizing capacity against acid rain, while Pinus rigida had the lowest capacity and even promoted acidification of soil.
The objectives of this study were to examine the amount of nutrient input by throughfall and stemflow, and the nutrient dynamics by throughfall, stemflow and soil solution among Piuns koraiensis, Larix leptolepis and hardwood forests including oaks at Kwangju-Gun, Kyonggi-Do. A total amount of rainfall during the study period was 1410.1mm. Of the total rainfall, 85% was from throughfall at the L. leptolepis stand, 84.5% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand, 83.2% at the unthinned P. koraiensu stand and 81.2% at the hardwood stand, showing greater throughfall at the conifer stand than at the hardwood stand. Stemflow showed 2.7% of rainfall at the hardwood stand, 1.3% at the unthinned P. koraiensis stand, 1.2% at the thinned P. koraiensis stand and 0.8% at the L. leptolepis stand, showing greater stemflow at the hardwood stand than at the conifer stand. Ion concentration of stemflow was greater than those of rainfall and throughfall. The conifer stand showed higher ion concentration than the hardwood stand both for cation and anion. The ion concentrations of throughfall and stemflow were higher in the descending order : $NH{_4}^+$-N > $K^+$ > $K^+$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ for cations and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$-N for anions. After the precipitation passed through the canopy, $K^+$ increased most at the hardwood stand, whereas $NH{_4}^+$-N did most at the P. koraiensis and L. leptolepis stands. The ion concentration of soil solution was higher in the descending order : $Ca^{2+}$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ for cations and $NO{_3}^-$-N > $Cl^-$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$ for anions. $NH{_4}^+$-N and $K^+$ seemed to be supplied primarily from atmospheric deposition while $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ from weathering.
