Analysis of Korean Historical Records of Comet Halley

  • In this paper, we analyzed Korean historical records of the periodic comet Halley in three periods (Three Kingdoms, the Goryeo dynasty, and the Joseon dynasty) using various sources such as Samguksagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), Goryeosa (History of the Goryeo Dynasty), and Joseonwangjosillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty). To determine the apparition time of the comet at each return, we referred to the works of Kronk. For the Three Kingdoms period, we could not find any record relevant to Halley's comet from Samguksagi. Instead, we examined the suggestion that the phenomenon two Suns appearing on April 1, 760 (in a luni-solar calendar), which is recorded in Samgukyusa (Renaissance of the Three Kingdoms), indicates an appearance of comet Halley during the daytime. In contrast, we found that all the returns of Halley's comet during the Goryeo dynasty are recorded, although some accounts are questioned. In addition, we found that the appearance of Halley's comet in 1145 is also mentioned in a spirit-path stele made in 1178. For the Joseon dynasty period, we found that all the returns of the comet are recorded, as with the Goryeo dynasty, except for the return of 1910, in which the former dynasty fell. In conclusion, we think that this study will be helpful for understanding Korean historical accounts of Halley's comet.

Ultrastructural Changes of Chinese Cabbage Root Tissues Associated with Pathogenesis of Plasmodiophora brassicae

  • Roots of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris var. chinensis) seedlings infected with Plasmodiophora brassicae were examined by light and electron microscopy to reveal histopathological changes related to pathogenesis in the susceptible host. The pathogen colonized the cortex and partly the stele as well, invading up to the xylem. Gall tissues could be differentiated from the initially infected tissues, involving less compact organization and new vascular development. The infected cells were much hypertrophied, and contained one to several plasmodia. Except cellular hypertrophy, no pathological ultrastructural modification was noted in the infected calls. Infected cytoplasm became dense with ground cytoplasm, inconspicuous central vacuole, and increased cellular organelles such as mitochondria and dictyosomes. There were two types of nuclear states of plasmodium, uninucleate and multinucleate. Both plasmodia were structurally similar, filled with lipid droplets, bounded with envelope, and containing mitochondria, endo-plasmic reticulum, and sometimes small vacuoles. Plasmodial fragmentation, which may be regarded as a way to discharge plasmodial materials into host cytoplasm, commonly occurred, forming plasmodial fragments by outgrowth of plasmodial cytoplasm and regional compartmentalization. Plasmodial fragments were degenerated sometimes followed by forming chains of spherical vesicles especially in the uninucleate plasmodial state. These ultrastructural features indicate the biotrophic nature of the pathogen associated with its pathogenesis in the susceptible host.

조선시대 능비(陵碑)의 건립과 어필비(御筆碑)의 등장 (Formative Stages of Establishing Royal Tombs Steles and Kings' Calligraphic Tombstones in Joseon Dynasty)

  • 본 논문은 조선 초 중기, 조선후기, 대한제국기 세 시기로 나누어 조선왕릉에 건립된 신도비와 표석의 시기별 건립추이와 양식적 특징에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과 왕실 능비(신도비와 표석)는 일반 사대부가와 달리 건립한 시기와 주체, 후계왕의 의도에 따라 시기별 차이를 보이며 제작되었음을 알 수 있었다. 구체적으로 15~17세기는 왕릉 신도비의 건립과 재건이 이루어진 시기, 18세기는 신도비가 표석으로 대치되어 다수 건립되었고 국왕의 어필을 직접 돌에 새긴 어필비가 처음으로 등장한 시기이며 대한제국기는 황제국으로 격상됨에 따라 조선 개국자인 태조와 왕후, 선조들에 대한 추숭(追崇) 사업이 활발해지면서 표석 중건이 이루어진 시기로 요약할 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 본다면, 결국 우리나라 능비의 역사는 조선후기를 기점으로 형성된 것이라고 해도 큰 무리가 없을 것이다. 왕릉 신도비의 형식은 삼국시대의 부정형한 석비의 초보적인 형태에서 벗어나'귀부이수'형의 당비(唐碑) 형식을 수용한 통일신라시대를 거쳐 고려 말 탑비의 퇴화된 양식에서 기원을 찾아볼 수 있다. 15세기 건립 당시부터 선왕에 대한 숭모 예를 표현하고자 하는 국왕과 왕의 치적이 국사(國史)에 모두 기록되어 있으므로 신도비를 별도로 세울 필요가 없다는 신료들의 입장이 대치되면서 건원릉 제릉 헌릉 구 영릉 4곳에만 건립된 채 왕릉에는 한동안 석비가 건립되지 않았다. 신도비 건립이 중단된 이후 17세기에 이르러 왕릉에 아무런 표(表)를 해 둘 수 없다는 의견이 제기됨에 따라 형식이 간소한 표석이 건립되기 시작했으며, 1682년 작 영릉(寧陵)의 표석은 최초로 왕릉에 건립된 표석이자 장대한 규모, 섬세한 조각기법을 보여주는 의미 있는 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 왕릉의 능표는 영조 재위 기간인 1740년대부터 대규모로 건립되었다. 열성(列聖)에 대한 추숭과 어필간행 등을 통해 자신의 왕위 계승의 전통성을 공표하고자 했던 영조는 제릉의 신도비를 재건하는 한편, 의릉(懿陵)을 비롯하여 총 20곳에 달하는 곳에 표석을 세우는 역사(役事)를 추진했고, 처음 친필 글씨를 돌에 새긴 어필비를 제작하기에 이르렀다. 이 시기 어필비 제작 현상은 임진왜란과 병자호란 후 소실된 어필을 보존하려 한 숙종의 신념을 계승한 영조에 의해 제도적으로 추진되면서 어필을 새긴 능비가 등장한 배경과 밀접한 연관이 있기 때문에 시대사적으로 주목할만하다. 이러한 표석은 1897년 고종이 대한제국을 선포하면서 다시 한번 다량 제작된 시기를 맞이하게 된다. 특히 고종은 대한제국의 정통성을 태조의 조선 건국에 두고 태조와 그 4대 선조에 대한 추숭과 기념물 제작에 심혈을 기울였고 전면과 후면 모두 자신의 글씨로 채움으로써 역대 어느 왕보다 통치자로서 권한을 상징적으로 드러내었다. 이상 언급한 왕릉의 신도비와 표석의 건립 추이는 동시대 원 묘에 건립된 신도비, 표석과 비교 고찰을 통해 시대별 특징과 왕실 조각품으로서 성격이 더욱 명확하게 드러날 것으로 생각한다.

강릉 신복사지 석조보살좌상 보물 제84호 수지상 오염물 제거 방안 연구 (Removing Resin Contaminants from the Seated Stone Buddha (Korean Treasure No.84) of Sinboksa Temple Site in Gangneung)

  • 강릉에 위치한 신복사지 석조보살좌상 보물 제84호 얼굴부에 광택이 있는 수지상 오염물이 고착되어 있었다. 오염의 범위는 백호부터 턱 밑까지이며 광택이 발생하여 미관을 해치고 있었다. 오염물 중 일부를 수거하여 FT-IR 분석을 실시한 결과 시아노아크릴계 순간접착제인 것을 확인하였다. 분석된 접착제는 면봉 등에 아세톤을 묻혀 녹이면서 제거하는 방법이 일반적이다. 그러나 석조보살좌상이 야외에 오랜 시간 노출되어 있어 표면 풍화가 많이 진행된 상태이므로 이를 고려하여 물리적 손상을 최소화하는 방법으로 제거하였다. 기존에 처리된 삼전도비의 페인트 낙서 제거에 적용된 습포법과 도토기의 수지제거에 이용된 증기법을 검토하여 물리적 손상 없이 제거할 수 있는 방법을 찾아보았다. 습포법과 증기법을 같이 적용하면 면봉을 이용한 물리적 작업없이 24시간 이내에 수지가 제거되는 것을 확인하였고 이를 토대로 현장에 적용하였다.

Development of Schizogenous and Lysigenous Aerenchyma in Rice Root

  • Aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots is quite important for adaptation to waterlogged or reduced soil conditions. Anatomical observations were carried out to clarify the development of schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma in elongating crown roots of rice. The crown roots of 3rd and 4th phytomer were taken from rice plants of the 8th leaf stage grown by hydroponic culture. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the cortex of crown root tip were observed using a light microscope with semi ultra-thin sections and the lysigenous aerenchyma in mature tissue of crown root were observed using a cryo scanning electron microscope (cryo-SEM) with freezing fracture method. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the root tip exist obviously in the middle portion of cortical cell layers close to the root-root cap junction, but not in root cap, stele and outer cell layers of cortex. The air spaces were formed at the junction of four neighbouring cells of inner cortex in the transverse sections, and between longitudinal cell layer connected along the root axis. Although many of those spaces were filled with liquid, some spaces seem to exist as air spaces. The lysigenous aerenchyma in the cortex, which hardly filled with liquid, emerged at 3-4 cm segment from the root tip and increased toward the basal region of root axis. The developing process of lysigenous aerenchyma was primarily separation of a radial row of cells caused by the shrinking and collapsing of cortical cells and then formation of septa along the radial cell rows by the fusion of cell wall with each other. These results suggest that the schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma playa role as a passage for the movement of oxygen into the root tip region where oxygen is required for respiration.

누란(樓蘭) 복식 연구 - 고대 한국복식과의 상관관계를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Costume of Loulan - Centered Around Interrelationship with Ancient Korean Costume -)

  • Loulan was an ancient kingdom located on the northeast of the Taklamakan Desert, a diverging point between the north and south of Silk Road, on the east of the current Turpan, from the 2nd century BC and the 7th century A.D, absorbing and propagating culture of both sides through active trade. Meanwhile, as many previous research investigations suggest the early trade between Korea and the countries bordering on Western China, characteristics of Loulan costume have been found to have similarity to those of ancient Korean costume. Also, it can be compared to costume in other surrounding regions. Therefore, it is a highly valuable region in researching ancient costume. This study examined the historical background of Loulan and its relationship with ancient Korea, analyzed the clothes found in historic sites of Louland and Niya, and compared costume elements of Loulan and those of Korea. The result of the study shows that first, the Loulan Jeogori was based on the Jikryeonggyoim, with Chaksu, narrow sleeves and the length coming between below the chest and above the bottom, and the line decoration and waist belt were very similar to Korean costumes, as well as the Banryeong, curved collar and Bansu, short sleeves. Second, the types of pants included Gunggo, characterized by closed bottom and many creases, and Daegugo, wide-leg trousers, which are very similar in shape to the Korean Shilla lay sculpture, Stele To Martyr Yi Ch'a-don, Yangjikgongdo and Wangheedo. Third, in accessories as well, the Jowu stuck on the Gwanmo is similar in the shapes to Korean costume.

Korean Historical Records on Halley's Comet Revisited

We also found that the appearance of Halley's comet in 1145 is mentioned in a spirit-path stele made in 1178. For the Joseon Dynasty period, we found that all apparitions of the comet are recorded, as with the Goryeo Dynasty, except for the return of 1910, at which time the former dynasty had fallen. In conclusion, we think that this study will be helpful for understanding Korean historical accounts on Halley's comet.

우슬(牛膝)의 형태(形態) 감별에 관한 연구 (A Study on a Morphological Identification of Achyranthes and Cyathula Root)

  • Objectives : A morphological classification among Achyranthes japonica Nakai (produced in Korea), A. bidentata Blume (imported from China), and Cyathula officinalis Kuan (used in China exclusively) was made through microscopic observation. Method : The slice of the tested material made by paraffin section technique was colored with Safranine Malachite Green contrast methods, and then observed and photographed by olymphus-BHT. Result : 1. Korean A. japonica Nakai has slim roots, whose diameter is $1{\sim}5\;mm$. 1) Most of its intersection is stele, which includes a lot of vascular bundles. The inside of vascular bundles shows the arrangement of $2{\sim}4$ cycles, the innermost wheel of which is divided into two parts. 2) Parts of parenchymatous cell include Crystal sand of calcium oxalate. 2. The diameter of the roots of Chinese A. bidentata Blume is $0.4{\sim}1\;cm$. 1) The xylem in the vascular bundle in the middle of its intersection is rather big, around which the inner parts of the vascular bundles are arranged in the shape of $2{\sim}4$ cycles around. The most outside part of it is small, and the middle part is gathered into $2{\sim}3$ groups. 2) Parts of parenchymatous cells include Crystal sand of calcium oxalate. 3. The roots of Chinese C. officinalis Kuan is thick, whose diameter is $0.5{\sim}3\;cm$. 1) Vascular bundle of its intersection is spotted, arranged in the shape of $4{\sim}11$ concentric circles, whose center is divided into $2{\sim}9$ groups. 2) Parenchymatous cells include crystal sand and square crystal of calcium oxalate. Conclusion : It is concluded that Achyranthes japonica Nakai, A. bidentata Blume, and C. officinalis Kuan have different shapes in both external forms and internal intersections, so that they can be easily distinguished from one another through microscopic observation.

칠백의총 중봉조헌선생일군순의비의 과학적 보존처리와 복원 (Scientific Conservation Treatment and Restoration of the Monument for Jo Heon and the Soldiers in Chilbaeguichong (Chilbaeguichong Jungbongjoheonseonsaengilgunsunuibi))

  • 이 연구는 약 2년에 걸친 칠백의총(사적 제105호) 중봉조헌선생일군순의비의 보존처리와 복원에 대한 것이다. 이 비는 일제시대(1940년)에 폭파되는 수난을 겪은 후 1971년에 복원되었으나 형태왜곡, 이질감, 구조적 안정성 등의 다양한 문제가 나타났다. 따라서 이 비의 원형을 복원하고자 다양한 과학적 연구와 함께 보존처리 및 복원이 이루어졌다. 특히 유실된 비좌를 복원 제작하고 이수와 비신을 다시 한 몸체로 접합하였으며, 이수 결실부위는 산지해석을 통해 신석으로 대체한 후 복원안을 수립하여 원형의 모습을 재현하였다.

Exo-O-Glycosylhydrolases in Korea Ginseng Roots

  • 6년생 고려인삼근(panax ginseng C.A. Meyer)중 수종의 exo-O-glycosylhydrolase 활성을 중심부와 주피부로 나누어 생육시기별로 조사하였다. $\alpha$-D-galactosidase, $\beta$-D-galactosidase, $\alpha$-L-man-nosidase , N-acetyl-$\beta$-D-giucosarninidase, $\alpha$-D-galactosidase, $\alpha$-L-arabinosidase와 $\beta$-D-fucosidase는 중심부와 주피부에서 모두 활성이 있으나 $\beta$-L-mannosidase, $\alpha$-D-xylosidase, $\beta$-D-xylosidase, $\alpha$-D-rhamnosidase와 $\beta$-D-glucosidase의 효소활성은 검색되지 않았다. $\beta$-D-galactosidase의 활성은 연중 높게 유지되었고 $\alpha$-L-mannosidase의 활성도 높은 경향이었다. 인삼근중 탄수화물 대사효소의 활성은 생육시기와 환경조건 및 부위에 따라 매우 다른 양상을 나타내었다.
