  • In this study, a Hardware-In-The-Loop-Simulation(HILS) system for developing a Electric-Power-Steering(EPS) system is designed. To test a EPS by HILS system, a mathematical vehicle model with a steering system model has been constructed. This mathematical model has been constructed. This mathematical model has been downloaded to the Digital-Signal-Processor(DSP) board. To realize the lateral force acting on the front wheel in a real car. the steering wheel angle sensor and vehicle velocity have been used for input signal. The force sensor has been used for a feedback signal. The full vehicle states could by simulated by the HILS system. Consequently, the HILS system could by used to analyze control-parameters of a EPS that contributes to the maneuverability and stability of a vehicle. At the same time, the HILS system can evaluate the whole performance of the vehicle-steering system. Also the HILS system could do test could not be executed in real vehicle. The HILs system will useful for developing the control logic for the EPS system.

  • Steering of the vehicles on a slippery highway is a difficult task for most passenger car drivers. The steering vehicles on slippery roads tend to slide outward with less lateral forces than on nor mal roads. When the drivers notice that their vehicles on a slippery highway start to depart from the cornering lane, most of them make a sudden steering and/or braking, which in turn may induce spin-out and instability on their vehicles. In this paper, an active steering control method is proposed such that the vehicles in slippery roads are steered as if they are driven on the normal roads. In the proposed method, the estimated lateral forces acting on the steering tires are compared with the reference values and the difference is compensated by the active steering method. A fuzzy logic controller is designed for this purpose and evaluated on a steering Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) system. Steering performance results on the slippery curved and sinus roads demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. This method can be realized with the steer-by-wire concept and is promising as an active safety technology.

  • For testing a newly designed ship's steering gear, a steering gear test bench with a steering gear to be tested and a load generation part should be prepared. The load given to the steering gear has to be pertinent to the load generated in a targeted ship. In this study, the authors suggest a process of estimating the load given to steering gears in ships. At first, a test for measuring the load in the steering gear of a real ship was conducted. Then, a process was developed to compute rudder driving torque and force by using basic equations including some empirical equations on ship's steering. The test results and the computation results on the load in the steering gear were compared, As a result, the process suggested in this study for estimating load in ship's steering gears was verified.

  • Recently, skid steering methods have been increasingly applied to unmanned ground vehicles since they can provide a narrow turn that general steering methods like ackerman steering may not provide. However, dynamic behaviors of the skid steering vehicles with articulating arms which occur during a steering are very complicated and coupled. This makes it difficult to control vehicles and in severe case vehicles may loose stability. There are two methods to control unmanned ground vehicles. The first one is speed control method generally used with easiness and robustness in remote vehicle control. The next one is torque control allowing the vehicles to get better performance in several cases provided careful application is achieved. This paper addresses dynamic phenomena of skid steering vehicles during steering and compares with vehicle driving control methods between torque(traction force) control and speed control.

  • In this paper, the steering characteristics of tracked vehicles are studied for the improvement of steering performance. The important design factor of military vehicles is high mobility. It is influenced by weight of a vehicle, engine capacity, power-train, and steering system. The military vehicle, which is equipped with caterpillar, has unique steering characteristics and is quite different from that of a wheeled vehicle. The steering of tracked vehicles is operated in the power pack due to different speeds of both sprockets. Under cornering conditions, power split and power regeneration are happened in the power pack. In case of power regeneration, power is transferred outside track after adding engine power and power inputted inside track from the ground. However, excessive power regeneration is transferred in the power pack. It damages mechanical elements. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the steering system and check mentioned problem above. In this study, the detailed dynamic model of steering system is presented, which includes slippage between track and roadwheel, inertia force, and inertia moment. Finally, our model is compared with the Kitano model and we verified the validity of the model.

  • Most of the work of construction equipment and agricultural machinery is done in off-road conditions. Autonomous driving required in these conditions uses GPS sensors, and PID controllers to control their speed and position. The hydrostatic steering, which is composed of a PSU, hydraulic hoses, and cylinders, rather than a mechanical coupling is used in these equipments. The PSU plays a key role in hydrostatic steering. Precise control of the position under various conditions requires detailed behavioral analysis of the basic components and operation. Two Gerotor PSU is now a commonly used safer option. The components of the PSU can be divided into mechanical and hydraulic actuating elements by its behavior. Since the system is combined by mechanical and hydraulic elements, the modelings are performed using Amesim, which is one of the most effective for the multi-domain dynamic system analysis. To confirm the validity of the model, input torque and pressures are checked with varying steering speed. The opening and the steering speed of normal and newly designed control valve set is investigated with the effect of centering spring force and friction. Finally, simulation results with fully detailed model with two gerotors are analyzed and compared with simple model.

  • An intelligent steering control system is designed for the steering control of a 4 wheel drive (4WD) electric vehicles without steering mechanism, where the vehicle is assumed to have 3 degree of freedom and input-output feedback linearization is employed. Especially, a fuzzy-rule-based side force estimator is suggested to avoid uncertain highlynonlinearexpression sof relations between side forces and their factors. Also, aneural-network-based predictive compensator is additionally utilized for the vehicle model to be correctly controlled with unstructured uncertainties. The proposed overall control system is numerically shown to be robust against drastic change of the external environments.

  • This paper focuses on the design of a flux-biased rotary electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density and its torque output shows linear dependence on both excitation current and rotation angle. Benefiting from a new electromagnetic topology, no additional axial force is generated and an armature with small moment of inertia is achieved. To improve modeling accuracy, the actuator is modeled with flux leakage taken into account. In order to achieve an FSM with good performance, a design methodology is presented. The methodology aims to achieve a balance between torque output, torque density and required coil magnetomotive force. By using the design methodology, the actuator which will be used to drive our FSM is achieved. The finite element simulation results validate the design results, along with the concept design, magnetic analysis and torque output model.

  • With the recent advancement of control method and battery technology, the electric vehicle have been researched to replace the conventional vehicle with electric vehicle with the view point of the environmental concerns and energy conservation. An electric vehicle which is equipped with the independent front steering system and in-wheel motors has advantage in terms of control. For example, the different torque which generated by left and right wheels directly can make yaw moment and the independent steering using outer wheel control is able to reduce the sideslip angle. Using of independent steering and driving system, the 4 wheel electric vehicle can improve a performance better than conventional vehicle. In this paper, we consider the method for improving the cornering performance of independent front steering system and in-wheel motor used electric vehicle with the compensated outer wheel angle and direct yaw moment control. Simulation results show that the method can improve the cornering performance of 4 wheel electric vehicle. We also apply the steering motor failure to steer the vehicle turned by the torque difference without steering. This paper describes an independent front steering and driving, consist of three parts; Vehicle Model, Control Algorithm for independent steering and driving and simulation. First, vehicle model is application of TruckSim software for independent front steering and 4 wheel driving. Second, control algorithm describes the reduced sideslip and direct yaw moment method in view of cornering performance. Last is simulation and verification.
