A beam steering system of X-band 2-D phased array antenna for radar application is developed. The beam steering system consists of real-time command generator, beam steering unit, control PCB of array module and power supply. It plays a role of beam steering and on-line check of phased array antenna. The performance of beam steering system is verified with pulse timing of current control in phase shifters and measurement of far-field of phased array antenna. The developed beam steering system offers basic technology to develop full-scale beam steering system of multi-function radar.

This paper discusses a dc motor equipped electric power steering (EPS) system and demonstrates its advantages over a typical hydraulic power steering (HPS) system. The tire-road interaction torque at the steering tires is calculated using the 2 d.o.f. bicycle model, in other words by using a single-track model, which was verified with the J-turn test of a real vehicle. Because the detail parameters of a steering system are not easily acquired, a simple system is modeled here. In previous EPS systems, the assisting torque for the measured driving torque is developed as a boost curve similar to that of the HPS system. To improve steering stiffness and return-ability of the steering system, a third-order polynomial as a torque map is introduced and modified within the preferred driving torques researched by Bertollini. Using the torque map modification sufficiently improves the EPS system.
Steering of the vehicles on a slippery highway is a difficult task for most passenger car drivers. The steering vehicles on slippery roads tend to slide outward with less lateral forces than on nor mal roads. When the drivers notice that their vehicles on a slippery highway start to depart from the cornering lane, most of them make a sudden steering and/or braking, which in turn may induce spin-out and instability on their vehicles. In this paper, an active steering control method is proposed such that the vehicles in slippery roads are steered as if they are driven on the normal roads. In the proposed method, the estimated lateral forces acting on the steering tires are compared with the reference values and the difference is compensated by the active steering method. A fuzzy logic controller is designed for this purpose and evaluated on a steering Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation (HILS) system. Steering performance results on the slippery curved and sinus roads demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller. This method can be realized with the steer-by-wire concept and is promising as an active safety technology.
In this study, the electronic power steering control system was developed and it was carried out to investigate experimentally the effect of the steering force for the on-road and off-road. The electronic power steering control system was engineered new trend system of power steering control system for tractor. It was composed of the electronic controller, detector, motor and mechanism mounted on tractor chassis. It was tested at the field in condition of tractor traveling speed 0 km/h, 3 km/h, 8 km/h, 11 km/h, 15 km/h, 18 km/h, 22 km/h, 25 km/h for measuring a maximum steering force. As a speed of tractor increased, a steering force decreased regardless of on-road or off-road. In addition, it is sufficiently a possibility of application of the steering system of tractor.
For testing a newly designed ship's steering gear, a steering gear test bench with a steering gear to be tested and a load generation part should be prepared. The load given to the steering gear has to be pertinent to the load generated in a targeted ship. In this study, the authors suggest a process of estimating the load given to steering gears in ships. At first, a test for measuring the load in the steering gear of a real ship was conducted. Then, a process was developed to compute rudder driving torque and force by using basic equations including some empirical equations on ship's steering. The test results and the computation results on the load in the steering gear were compared, As a result, the process suggested in this study for estimating load in ship's steering gears was verified.
This paper presents a sliding mode observer-based fault detection algorithm for steering inputs of an all-terrain crane. All-terrain cranes with multi-axles have several steering modes for various working purposes. Since steering angles at the other axles except the first wheel are controlled by using the information of steering angle at the first wheel, a reliable signal of the first axle's steering angle should be secured for the driving safety of cranes. For the fault detection of steering input signal, a simplified crane model-based sliding mode observer has been used. Using a sliding mode observer with an equivalent output injection signal that represents an actual fault signal, a fault signal in steering input was reconstructed. The road steering mode of the crane's steering system was used to conduct performance evaluations of a proposed algorithm, and an arbitrary fault signal was applied to the steering angle at the first wheel. Since the road steering mode has different steering strategies according to different speed intervals, performance evaluations were conducted based on the curved path scenario with various speed conditions. The design of algorithms and performance evaluations were conducted on Matlab/Simulink environment, and evaluation results reveal that the proposed algorithm is capable of detecting and reconstructing a fault signal reasonably well.
Autonomous agricultural machines that are operated in small-scale farmland frequently experience turning and changes in direction. Thus, unlike when they are operated in large-scale farmland, the steering control systems need to be controlled precisely so that travel errors can be minimized. This study aims to develop a control algorithm for improving the path tracking performance of a steering system by analyzing the effect of the setting of the waypoint, which serves as the reference point for steering when an autonomous agricultural machine moves along a path or a coordinate, on control errors. A simulation was performed by modeling a 26-hp tractor steering system and by applying the equations of motion of a tractor, with the use of a computer. Path tracking errors could be reduced using an algorithm which sets the waypoint for steering on a travel path depending on the radius of curvature of the path and which then controls the speed and steering angle of the vehicle, rather than by changing the steering speed or steering ratio which are dependent on mechanical performance.
A double-end rod hydraulic cylinder is widely used with a steering valve for the steering control system in large tractors. For the development of automatic steering controller, the feasibility of using a proportional control valve replacing the conventional manual steering valve to control the position of hydraulic steering cylinder was investigated in terms of the max. overshoot, the steady-state error and the rise time. A simulation model for the electrohydraulic steering system with load using AMESim package was developed to be valid so that the proper control algorithm could be chosen through the computer simulation. It could be concluded that the P-control algorithm was sufficient to control the electrohydraulic steering system, where the control frequency should be no greater than 20 Hz at the P-gain of 5. In particular, the performance of the developed steering controller was satisfactory even at the conditions of varying flow rates and loads.
In this study, a mathematical model was suggested to predict the maximum steering torque of a tractor on off-road. The model took into account the characteristics of soil, including the pressure-sinkage and the shearing characteristics as well as the primary design parameters of steering system of the tractor. The efficiency of the developed model was verified via comparison of the maximum steering torque predicted using the model with those measured from steering torque test. The results showed that the predicted maximum steering torques were in good agreement with the measured ones from the steering test on soft soil in which tractor is generally operated. Thus, we concluded that the model developed in this study could be used for prediction of maximum steering torque of a tractor.
The steering systems of all-terrain cranes have been developed with various control strategies for the stability and drivability. To optimally control the input steering angle, an accurate mathematical model that represents the actual crane dynamics is required. The derivation of an accurate mathematical model to optimally control the steering angle, however, is difficult since the steering-control strategy generally varies with the magnitude of the crane's longitudinal velocity, and the postures of the crane's working parts vary while it is being driven. To address this problem, this paper proposes an automatic steering-control algorithm that is based on the MPC (model predictive control) with a disturbance observer for all-terrain cranes. The designed disturbance observer of this study was used to estimate the error between the base steering model and the actual crane. A model predictive controller was used for the computation of the optimal steering angle, along with the use of the base steering model with an estimated uncertainty. Performance evaluations of the designed control algorithms were conducted based on a curved-path scenario in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The performance-evaluation results show a sound reference-path-tracking performance despite the large uncertainties.
