A new numerical algorithm of finite element methods is presented to solve high Deborah number flow problems with geometric singularities. The steady inertialess planar 4 : 1 contraction flow is chosen for its test. As a viscoelastic constitutive equation, we have applied the globally stable (dissipative and Hadamard stable) Leonov model that can also properly accommodate important nonlinear viscoelastic phenomena. The streamline upwinding method with discrete elastic-viscous stress splitting is incorporated. New interpolation functions classified as rational interpolation, an alternative formalism to enhance numerical convergence at high Deborah number, are implemented not for the whole set of finite elements but for a few elements attached to the entrance comer, where stress singularity seems to exist. The rational interpolation scheme contains one arbitrary parameter b that controls the singular behavior of the rational functions, and its value is specified to yield the best stabilization effect. The new interpolation method raises the limit of Deborah number by 2∼5 times. Therefore on average, we can obtain convergent solution up to the Deborah number of 200 for which the comer vortex size reaches 1.6 times of the half width of the upstream reservoir. Examining spatial violation of the positive definiteness of the elastic strain tensor, we conjecture that the stabilization effect results from the peculiar behavior of rational functions identified as steep gradient on one domain boundary and linear slope on the other. Whereas the rational interpolation of both elastic strain and velocity distorts solutions significantly, it is shown that the variation of solutions incurred by rational interpolation only of the elastic strain is almost negligible. It is also verified that the rational interpolation deteriorates speed of convergence with respect to mesh refinement.
NOAA/AVHRR data were used to analyze sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and thermal fronts (TFs) in the Korean seas. Temporal and spatial analyses were based on data from 1993 to 2000. Harmonic analysis revealed mean SST distributions of $10{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Annual amplitudes and phases were $4{\sim}11^{\circ}C$ and $210{\sim}240^{\circ}$, respectively. Inverse distributions of annual amplitudes and phases were found for the study seas, with the exception of the East China Sea, which is affected by the Kuroshio Current. Areas with high amplitudes (large variations in SSTs) showed 'low phases' (early maximum SST); areas with low amplitudes (small variations in SSTs) had 'high phases' (late maximum SST). Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analyses of SSTs revealed a first-mode variance of 97.6%. Annually, greater SST variations occurred closer to the continent. Temporal components of the second mode showed higher values in 1993, 1994, and 1995. These phenomena seemed to the effect of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$. The Sobel edge detection method (SEDM) delineated four fronts: the Subpolar Front (SPF) separating the northern and southern parts of the East Sea; the Kuroshio Front (KF) in the East China Sea, the South Sea Coastal Front (SSCF) in the South Sea, and a tidal front (TDF) in the West Sea. Thermal fronts generally occurred over steep bathymetric slopes. Annual amplitudes and phases were bounded within these frontal areas. EOF analysis of SST gradient values revealed the temporal and spatial variations in the TFs. The SPF and SSCF were most intense in March and October; the KF was most significant in March and May.
In order to understand phytoplankton and bacterial distribution in tropical coral reef ecosystems in relation to the mangrove community, their biomass and activities were measured in the sea waters of the Chuuk and the Kosrae lagoons located in Micronesia. Chlorophyll a and bacterial abundance showed maximal values in the seawater near the mangrove forests, and then steeply decreased as the distance increased from the mangrove forests, indicating that environmental conditions for these microorganisms changed greatly in lagoon waters. Together with chlorophyll a, abundance of Synechococcus and phototrophic picoeukaryotes and a variety of indicator pigments for dinoflagellates, diatoms, green algae and cryptophytes also showed similar spatial distribution patterns, suggesting that phytoplankton assemblages respond to the environmental gradient by changing community compositions. In addition, primary production and bacterial production were also highest in the bay surrounded by mangrove forest and lowest outside of the lagoon. These results suggest that mangrove waters play an important role in energy production and nutrient cycling in tropical coasts, undoubtedly receiving large inputs of organic matter from shore vegetation such as mangroves. However, the steep decrease of biomass and production of phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria within a short distance from the bay to the level of oligotrophic waters indicates that the effect of mangrove waters does not extend far away.

In the process of integrity evaluation for nuclear power plant components, a series of fracture mechanics evaluation on surface cracks in reactor pressure vessel(RPV) must be conducted. These fracture mechanics evaluation are based on stress intensity factor, K. However, under pressurized thermal shock(PTS) conditions, the combination of thermal and mechanical stress by steep temperature gradient and internal pressure causes considerably high tensile stress at the inside of RPV wall. Besides, the internal pressure during the normal operation produces high tensile stress at the RPV wall. As a result, cracks on inner surface of RPVs may experience elastic-plastic behavior which can be explained with J-integral. In such a case, however, J-integral may possibly lose its validity due to constraint effect. In this paper, in order to verify the suitability of J-integral, tow dimensional finite element analyses were applied for various surface cracks. A total of 18 crack geometries were analyzed, and $\Omega$ stresses were obtained by comparing resulting HRR stress distribution with corresponding actual stress distributions. In conclusion, HRR stress fields were found to overestimate the actual crack-tip stress field due to constraint effect.

Nuclear criticality safety analyses (NCSAs) considering burnup credit were performed for the GBC-32 cask. The used nuclear fuel assemblies (UNFAs) discharged from Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 Cycle 6 were loaded into the cask. Their axial burnup distributions and average discharge burnups were evaluated using the DeCART and Multi-purpose Analyzer for Static and Transient Effects of Reactors (MASTER) codes, and NCSAs were performed using SCALE 6.1/STandardized Analysis of Reactivity for Burnup Credit using SCALE (STARBUCS) and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code, version 6 (MCNP 6). The axial burnup distributions were determined for 20 UNFAs with various initial enrichments and burnups, which were applied to the criticality analysis for the cask system. The UNFAs for 20- and 30-year cooling times were assumed to be stored in the cask. The criticality analyses indicated that $k_{eff}$ values for UNFAs with nonuniform axial burnup distributions were larger than those with a uniform distribution, that is, the end effects were positive but much smaller than those with the reference distribution. The axial burnup distributions for 20 UNFAs had shapes that were more symmetrical with a less steep gradient in the upper region than the reference ones of the United States Department of Energy. These differences in the axial burnup distributions resulted in a significant reduction in end effects compared with the reference.

An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the heat/mass transfer for impingement/effusion cooling system with inclined jet. Jets with inclined angle of 60 are applied to impingement/effusion cooling. At the jet Reynolds number of 10,000, the experiments were carried out for blowing ratios ranging from 0.0 to 1.5. The local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate are measured using a naphthalene sublimation method. The result indicates that the inclined jet causes the non-uniform and low heat/mass transfer compared to the vertical jet. At stagnation region, the peak position is shifted from the geometrical center of injection hole due to Coanda effect and its level is higher than that of vertical jet due to increase in turbulence intensity by steep velocity gradient near the stagnation region. Further, the secondary peak region disappears because the interaction between adjacent wall jets weakens. When the initial crossflow occurs, the distorted heat/mass transfer pattern appears. As the blowing ratio (crossflow rate) increases, the heat/mass transfer distributions become similar to those of the vertical jet. This is because the effect of crossflow is dominant compared to that of inclined jet under high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$. At low blowing ratio $(M{\leq}0.5)$, averaged Sh value is 10% lower than that of vertical jet, whereas its value at high blowing ratio $(M{\geq}1.0)$ is similar to that of vertical jet.
The refractive index, refractive-index distribution, birefringence, and the attenuation of the plastic fiber prepared from the transparent PMMA prerod were measured in accordance with continuous heat drawing temperature($T_d$). The refractive indices were decreased with $T_d$ elevation but the refractive-index distribution from the center of fiber to periphery was higher at lower $T_d$. The steep decrease of gradient index was only at the periphery of higher $T_d$. Birefringence was observed only below $220^{\circ}C$ and ranged $5{\times}10^{-4}$ to $6{\times}10^{-4}$. No birefringence was observed above $220^{\circ}C$. An elevation of $T_d$ brought about a monotonous decrease in the attenuation of the fiber.
This study was carried out to investigate the vacuum drying characteristics of 50mm- and 75mm- thick tree disks of some domestic softwoods for substituting the conventional hardwoods as the materials for wood crafts. Though the elapsed drying times from green to in-use moisture content(MC) were largely shortened by vacuum drying, the tree disks treated by EWS couldn't be dried to in-use MC, and so sapwood stains also were occurred severely. We suggest EWS treatment is undesirable for the species with very high sapwood portion or vacuum drying with hot water circulation heating system. Heart checks were slight, but sapwood checks, which have never been trouble in drying process of tree disks, were severe. For the reasonable explanation it is suggested MC differences between sapwood and heartwood were large and most of tree disks had already no barks before drying test. Ginkgo was vacuum-dried with very slight drying defects such as heart checks, sapwood checks. V-cracks and sapwood stains. In Korean red pine and pitch pine V-cracks were severely occurred. And it was found the special feature that most of these defected tree disks contained several V-cracks within one tree disk. It can be considered as the causes that the region of sapwood was defected by the several checks at the early drying stage because of the steep MC gradient along the radial direction, and then at the later drying stage the drying stresses due to differential shrinkage were concentrated on these brittle spots.
The Inseong gold-silver mine is located 3Km northwest of Suanbo, Choongcheongbugdo, Republic of Korea. The mine occurs in the shear zone formed by tension fractures within the Hwanggangri Formation of the Ogcheon metamorphic belt. Ore minerals found in the gold-silver bearing hydrothermal quartz vein composed mainly of pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, galena and minor amount of chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, stannite, bismuthininte, native bismuth, chalcocite, electrum and tellurian canfieldite(?). The gangue minerals are quartz, calcite, chlorite and rhodochrocite. Wallrock alterations such as chloritization, silicitication, pyritization, carbonitization and sericitization can be observed in or around the quartz vein. According to the paragenetic sequence, quartz vein structure and mineral assemnlages, three different stages of ore formation can be recognized. The physico-chemical environment of ore formation in this deposit shows slight variation from stage to stage, but the condition of main ore deposition can be summarized as follows. Fluid inclusion, S-istope geothermometry and geothermometry based on mineral chemistry by use of arsenopyrite and chlorite show the ore was formed at temperature between 399 and $210^{\circ}C$ from fluids with salinities of 3.3-5.8 wt.% equivalent NaCl. It indicates that pressure during the mineralization is less than 0.6 Kb corresponding to a depth not greater than 1Km. S-isotope data suggests that thermal fluid may have magmatic origin wit some degree of mixing with meteoric water. In coclusion, the Inseong gold-silver deposit was formed at shallow depth and relatively high-temperature possibly with steep geothermal gradient under xenothermal condition.

Korea has been continuously affected by landslides, as 70% of the land is covered by mountains and most of annual rainfall concentrates between June and September. Recently, abrupt climate change affects the increase of landslide occurrence. Gangwon region is especially suffered by landslide damages, because the most of the part is mountainous, steep, and having shallow soil. In this study, a landslide risk assessment model was developed by applying logistic regression to the various data of Duksan-ri, Inje-eup, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do, which has suffered massive landslide triggered by heavy rain in July 2006. The information collected from field investigation and aerial photos right after the landslide of study area were stored in GIS DB for analysis. Slope gradient entered in two ways-as categorical variable and as linear variable. Error matrix for each case was made, and developed model showed the classification accuracy of 81.4% and 81.9%, respectively.
