High speed wire seam weldability of tin coated thin gage sheet steels was investigated. Thickness and coating weight ranges of the test materials were 0.21~0.35mm and 1.1/1.1~2.8/11.2g/$m^2$, respectively. Test results indicated that the surface roughness value, Rz decreased as increasing the coating weight. The Rz was thought to be one of the important factors to influence the optimum welding condition range, $\triangle$Q. The $\triangle$Q showed close relationship with welding conditions such as welding pressure and travel speed. Higher welding pressure widened the $\triangle$Q while higher travel speed reduced the $\triangle$Q value. Results also demonstrated that tin coating weight should be optimized based on the weldability or the serviceability after welding. At th HAZ of sheet materials with thinner coating layer, tin depleted zone was produced since molten film of the coating material on the base metal agglomerated by the surface tension, which could result in reducing the corrosion resistance of the HAZ in the service environment.
Mach peening treatment is one of the various kinds of techniques to improve the fatigue properties. The mach peening process gives high-level work hardening and compressive residual stress near the surface layer, improving the fatigue strength. In addition, this treatment reduces slip bands that initiate the fatigue cracks near the surface. During impingement, a plastic indentation surrounded by a plastic zone is formed. Mach peening treatment characteristic is less energy consumption and is an environmental friendly processing methods that is not accompanied by pollution. It is machining process that can prevent fatigue fracture beforehand in structure using already as well as process of production. The test results showed that fatigue crack propagation delay appeared by drilling type 43%, mach peening type 110%.
Fatigue tests under acid fog environment were carried out to investigate the effect of acid fog on the corrosion fatigue strength of SM55C in comparison with distilled water. Main results obtained are as follows. The fatigue strength of SM55C under acid fog environment are remarkably decreased as compared with that of distilled water specimen. The corrosive effect of acid fog on fatigue strength are more serious under low stress amplitude level than under high stress amplitude level, and this leads to continuous reduction of fatigue strength. Under acid fog environment in early stage of crack growth. because the corrosive components dissolve the crack face offensively. the unstable fracture surface appears. But, the stable corrosion precipitation and products layer are formed on the fracture surface in accordance with the time pass.
The plasma spray process was used to deposit coatings of $ZrO_2$-8wt%Y2O3 powders on mild steel sub-strate, and the characteristics of as-deposited and heat treated coatings have been investigated. Particulary, the variations of porosity, wear resistance, thermal barrier and thermal shock resistance in $ZrO_2$-8wt% $Y_2O_3$coatings after heat treatment under vacuum circumstance have been investigated. The porosity of the coating layer was increased with increased spray distance. In the case of the arc current of 450A and at the spray distance of 50mm, it was obtained the lowest amount of porosity. After heat treatment, the amount of porosity was found to be decreased, and the wear resistance, microhardness and thermal shock resistance were im-proved. However, the thermal barrier was decreased.
Titanium nitride and related overlayers produced by arc ion plating (AIP) are applied as commercial coatings in world-wide scale since the middle of 80s. Due to the achievements of low temperature deposition (LTD), they begin now to be used as wear and corrosion-resistant coatings for machine parts, besides applications on cemented carbide and high speed steel cutting tools. On the other side, TiN can be now applied successfully to brass, Al-alloy, ZnAl alloy articles as decorative coating through LTD. Various nitrides, carbonitrides, borides and other refractory compounds, such as (Ti, Al)N, TiCN, CrN, are used as the coatings for special heavy-duty working conditions instead of TiN since 90s. More and more multilayer coatings are applied now substituting single layer ones. Duplex processes are under development.
The subsequent recrystallizations technique, and experimental strain measurement method by use of recrystallization phenomena, has been successfully applied for the observation of machined surface plastic zones with equivalent plastic strain .epsilon. .geq. 0.5, 0.12 and 0.02 of type 304 stainless steel. The depth of the zone with .epsilon. .geq. 0.5 is very small, 10-15 .mu. m, while those with .epsilon. .geq. 0.12 are 100-200 .mu. m and 200-450 .mu. m, respectively. The depths increase with increasing depth of cut and with decreasing rake angle. The relation between the depth of the zones and the cutting paramenters is shown. The deformation state ahead of the quick-stop cut was also well visualized by the technique.
