  • A boiler system transforms water to pressured supercritical steam which drives the running of the turbine to rotate in the generator to produce electricity in power plants. Materials for building the tube system face challenges from high temperature creep damage, thermal fatigue/expansion, fireside and steam corrosion, etc. A database on the creep resistance strength and steam oxidation of the materials is important to the long-term reliable operation of the boiler system. Generally, the ferritic steels, i.e., grade 1, grade 2, grade 9, and X20, are extensively used as the superheater (SH) and reheater (RH) in supercritical (SC) and ultra supercritcal (USC) power plants. Currently, advanced austenitic steel, such as TP347H (FG), Super304H and HR3C, are beginning to replace the traditional ferritic steels as they allow an increase in steam temperature to meet the demands for increased plant efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to provide the state-of-the-art knowledge on boiler tube materials, including the strengthening, metallurgy, property/microstructural degradation, oxidation, and oxidation property improvement and then describe the modern microstructural characterization methods to assess and control the properties of these alloys. The paper covers the limited experience and experiment results with the alloys and presents important information on microstructural strengthening, degradation, and oxidation mechanisms.

  • Prestressed composite girder with concrete infilled steel tubes(PSC-CFT girder) is new type of bridge girder which enhances the resisting capacities due to the double composite action of PSC composite girder and concrete infilled tube. The flexural behaviors of PSC-CFT girder in the negative moment regions are investigated based on the experimental observations recently performed on two of 3.6m long specimens. The mechanical and structural roles and failure mechanism of the composite action are discussed through comparing the test results with those numerically predicted by the three methods of one and three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis, and section analysis method.

  • We present the results of a multi-material numerical investigation of the propagation of a combustible gas mixture detonation in narrow metal tubes. We use an experimentally tuned one step Arrhenius chemical reaction and ideal gas equation of state (EOS) to describe stoichiometric $H_2-O_2$ and $C_2H_4-O_2$ detonations. The purely plastic deformations of copper and steel tubes are modeled using the Mie-Gruneisen EOS and Johnson-Cook strength model. To precisely track the interface motion between the detonating gas and the deforming wall, we use the hybrid particle level-sets within the ghost fluid framework. The calculated results are validated against the experimental data because the results explain the process of the generation and subsequent interaction of the expansion wave with the high-strain-rate deformation of the walls.

  • To identify the effects of an outflow area on pool boiling heat transfer in a vertical annulus, three different flow restrictors were studied experimentally. For the test, a heated tube of smooth stainless steel and water at atmospheric pressure were used. Both annuli with open and closed bottoms were considered. To validate the effects of the outflow area on the heat transfer, the results of the annulus with the restrictor were compared with the data for the plain annulus without the restrictor. The reduction of the outflow area ultimately results in a decrease in the heat transfer. As the outflow area is very small, a slight increase in heat transfer is also observed. The major cause of this tendency is explained as the difference in the intensity of liquid agitation cause by the movement of coalesced bubbles. It is identified that the convective flow, pulsating flow, and evaporative mechanism are considered as the important mechanisms.

  • Recently, the use of tubes in the manufacturing of the automobile parts has increased and therefore many automotive manufactures have tried to use hydro-forming technology. The hydro-forming technology may cause many advantages to automotive applications in terms of better structural integrity of the parts, lower cost from fewer part count, material saving, weight reduction, lower spring-back, improved strength and durability and design flexibility. In this study, the whole process of front engine cradle (or front sub-frame) parts development by tube hydro-forming using steel material having tensile strength of 440MPa grade is presented. At the part design stage, it requires feasibility study and process design aided by CAE (Computer Aided Design) to confirm hydro-formability in details. Effects of parameters such as internal pressure, axial feeding and geometry shape on automotive sub-frame by hydro-forming process were carefully investigated. Overall possibility of hydro-formable sub-frame parts could be examined by cross sectional analyses. Moreover, it is essential to ensure the formability of tube material on every forming step such as pre-bending, preforming and hydro-forming. At the die design stage, all the components of prototyping tools are designed and interference with press is examined from the point of geometry and thinning.

  • This paper presents the effects of the tube materials on the heat transfer performance of double-tube heat exchangers for the development of heat exchangers using deep sea water. Heat exchangers made of titanium, aluminum. stainless steel, iron, copper, and aluminum with carbon black 0.015mm and 0.15mm coating were tested. Also, the heat transfer rate of each heat exchanger was calculated by using EES program. The calculated values were compared with the experimental ones, and the deviations were less than 10%. From the above experiment and analysis, aluminum with carbon black 15 coating can be considered the most promising candidate for the replacement of titanium heat exchanger.

  • In this study, high temperature integrity evaluation on a pressure vessel of the expansion tank operating at elevated temperature of $510^{\circ}C$ in the sodium test facility of the SEFLA(Sodium Thermal-hydraulic Experiment Loop for Finned-tube Sodium-to-Air heat exchanger) to be constructed at KAERI has been performed. Evaluations of creep-fatigue damage based on a full 3D finite element analyses were conducted for the expansion tank according to the recent elevated temperature design codes of ASME Section III Subsection NH and French RCC-MRx. It was shown that the expansion tank maintains its integrity under the intended creep-fatigue loads. Quantitative code comparisons were conducted for the pressure vessel of austenitic stainless steel 316L.

  • This paper presents the effects of the tube materials and corrosion on the heat transfer performance of double-tube heat exchangers for the development of heat exchangers using deep sea water. Heat exchangers made of titanium, aluminum. stainless steel, iron, copper, and aluminum with electro-deposition coatings(Carbon black_$15{\mu}m$, Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) were tested. Also, the heat transfer rate of each heat exchanger was calculated by using EES program. For the acceleration of corrosion by sea water, the temperature of sea water $70^{\circ}C$ and the concentration of salt 3.5% were considered. And the specimens were immersed in sea water during 6 weeks. From the above experiment and analysis, aluminum with electro-deposition coating(Carbon black_$150{\mu}m$) can be considered the most promising candidate for the replacement of titanium heat exchanger.

  • For the composite behavior of steel tube and inner concrete, the shear connectors should be applied to the CFT structures. However, the present design codes don't provide the design criteria that can be applied on shear connectors in the CFT structures typically filled with plain concrete. This study has been carried out to propose design criteria (shear strength and resistance factor) for the stud shear connectors in CFT structures. Experimental tests using the push-out specimens with the plain concrete blocks and finite element analysis were conducted for the purpose of verifying the main failure mode to propose the shear strength of studs in CFT structures. From the results of this study, the main failure mode of studs in CFT structures is splitting crack of concrete and this failure mode reduces shear strength of studs in CFT structures relatively to those embedded in RC blocks.
