  • This paper is concerned with the weight reduction of front side member of a vehicle considering the application of high strength steel sheet. The influence of steel sheet grade and thickness on the energy absorption, impact load and deformed shape of front side member is investigated by using reverse engineering and FE-analysis. The reverse engineering is applied to obtain 3D model of front side member from B.I.W for the FE simulation. FE analysis is carried out with commercial crash analysis SW PAM-CRASH. The crashworthiness of front side member is considerably improved with steel sheet strength and thickness increase. From the result of this study the weight reduction in automotive parts for the improvement of the fuel efficiency can be easily achieved with replacing high strength steel without deterioration of crashworthiness.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of axially-loaded steel RHS (rectangular hollow section) compression members that are partially reinforced along their lengths with welded steel plates. 28 slender column tests were carried out to investigate the effects of the slenderness ratio of the unreinforced member and the ratio of the reinforced length of the member to its entire length. In addition to the slender column tests, 14 stub-column tests were conducted to determine the basic mechanical properties of the test specimens under uniform compression. Test results show that both the compressive strength and stiffness of an RHS member can be increased significantly compared to its unreinforced counterpart even when only the central quarter of the member is reinforced. Based on the limited test data, it can be concluded that partial reinforcement is, in general, more effective in members with larger slenderness ratios. A simple design expression is also proposed to predict the compressive strength of RHS columns partially reinforced along their length with welded steel plates by modifying the provisions of AISC 360-10 to account for the partial reinforcement.

  • The flat type automotive cross members with high strength steel have advantages in light weight and fewer parts compared to the hump type cross members. But the complex part shape of the flat type cross member and the poor formability of high strength steel make it difficult to form the parts without forming defects, such as splits and wrinkles. The purpose of this study is to develop the flat type automotive cross member with high strength steel. For that purpose, drawing processes are evaluated using PAM-$STAMP^{TM}$ and proper draw die and blank designs are proposed. Using the proposed die and blank design, the flat type upper and lower cross member could be formed successfully without forming defects.

  • In structural design procedure, The procedure of member selection manages complex data relationship and reflects structural expert's knowledge. It is a difficult problem to construct an effective system with the conventional l programming technique. Knowledge_based s!'stem is a software system capable of supporting the explicit representation of expert's knowledge in member selection process through member data and reasoning mechanisms. This study describes useful methodology for structuring knowledge and representing relation between member data and knowledge. And this study shows the application of this member for member selection in the steel structural design.

  • In this study, the crash analysis was carried out to evaluate the influence of steel sheet grade and thickness on weight reduction and crash characteristics for front side member which had an important role of absorbing the impact energy during front and side impact. In order to achieve the aim of this study the reverse engineering was applied to obtain 3D model of front side member from BIW for the FE simulation. In the result, the crashworthiness of front side member is considerably improved with steel sheet strength and thickness increase. Also, the weight reduction in automotive parts for the improvement of the fuel efficiency can be easily achieved with applying high strength steel without deterioration of crashworthiness.

  • This paper presents an effective hysteretic model for the prediction and evaluation of steel reinforced concrete member seismic performance. This model adopts the load-deformation relationship acquired from monotonic load tests and incorporates the double-pivot behavior of composite members subjected to cyclic loads. Deterioration in member stiffness was accounted in the analytical model. The composite member performance assessment control parameters were calibrated from the test results. Comparisons between the cyclic load test results and analytical model validated the proposed method's effectiveness.

  • The safety level of a structural system designed per code specifications can not be inferred directly from the reliability of members due to the load redistribution and nonlinear inelastic structural behavior. Comparison of the system and member reliability, which is scarce in the literature, is likely to indicate any possible inconsistency of design codes in providing safe and economical designs. Such a comparative study is presented in this study for moment resisting two-dimensional steel frames designed per AISC LRFD Specifications. The member reliability is evaluated using the resistance of the beam-column element and the elastic load effects that indirectly accounts for the second-order effects. The system reliability analysis is evaluated based on the collapse load factor obtained from a second-order inelastic analysis. Comparison of the system and member reliability is presented for several steel frames. Results suggest that the failure probability of the system is about one order of magnitude lower than that of the most critically loaded structural member, and that the difference between the system and member reliability depends on the structural configuration, degree of redundancy, and dead to live load ratio. Results also suggest that the system reliability is less sensitive to initial imperfections of the structure than the member reliability. Therefore, the system aspect should be incorporated in future design codes in order to achieve more reliability consistent designs.

  • As business of steel consuming industries is freshly booming in domestic and foreign countries especially in China, the price of steel plates comes to very high compare with the other materials. The HR Plates made from hot rolled coils is lower steel plates in price. In this study, material characteristics of HR Plates is investigated and availabilities of HR Plates for steel bridges as sub member or a main member is discussed. No difference between steel plates and HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm is found in most characters such as cutting operation, fabrication and even welding. As sub member in steel box girders, the application ratio and the loss ratio of HR Plate is investigated as about $10{\sim}15%$, average $10{\sim}15%$ respectively.

  • The aim of this study is to estimate the compressive force of steel member using a system identification technique with vibration measurements. To date, several methods have been presented to estimate the compressive force using static and/or dynamic responses of the steel member. However, each and every one of these methods has its disadvantages as well as advantages in its procedures, level of accuracy, and equipment requirements. The paper reports a qualitative investigation of vibration under monoharmonic excitation. The methodology utilizes the relationship between the natural frequencies, the structural parameters, and the compressive force of the member. In this paper, experimental results are presented with a steel beam subjecting to several compressive forces and the proposed method is validated using both numerical and experimental data.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate structural safety and economic efficiency of prestressed hybrid beam using T-shape steel member which was developed to build large span educational facilities. Hybrid beam specimens were manufactured with 16.0m long and load was uniformly distributed by 12.0kN steel hexahedrons. In this study, honeycomb beam design process was introduced to T-shape section steel beam design. Vibration condition of specimens were analyzed by Korea Building Code 2009 and AISC Steel Design Guide Series-11. As a result, the prestressed hybrid beam with T-shape steel member has about 10.4% of cost reduction effect.
