  • Concrete filled steel tube structures were recently used in constructing high-rise buildings due to their effectiveness. Studies on concrete filled steel tubes have been focused on the experiments of uni-axial compression and bending and eccentric compression. There were also a few studies that investigated CFT member behavior under combined compression and torsion. The behavior of a circular CFT column under combined torsion and compression was theoretically investigated, considering the confinement of steel tubes on the concrete, the softening of the concrete, and the spiral effect, which were the dominant factors that influenced compression and torsion strength. The biaxial stress effects due to diagonal cracking were also taken into account. By applying those factors to compatibility and equilibrium conditions, the basic equation was derived, and the equation could be used to incorporate the torsional behavior of the entire loading history of the CFT member.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of bifurcation and the instability due to the initial imperfection of the space truss, which is sensitive to the initial conditions, and the calculated buckling load by the analysis of Eigen-values and the determinant of tangential stiffness. A two-free nodes model, a star dome, and a three-ring dome model were selected as case studies in order to examine the unstable phenomenon due to the sensitivity to Eigen mode, and the influence of the rise-span ratio and the load parameter on the buckling load were analyzed. The sensitivity to the imperfection of the two-free nodes model changed the critical path after reaching the limit point through the bifurcation mode, and the buckling load level was reduced by the increase in the amount of imperfection. The two sensitive buckling patterns for the model can be explained by investigating the displaced position of the free node, and the asymmetric Eigen mode was a major influence on the unstable behavior due to the initial imperfection. The sensitive mode was similar to the in-extensional mechanism basis of the simplified model. Since the rise-span ratio was higher, the effect of local buckling is more prominent than the global buckling in the star dome, and bifurcation on the equilibrium path occurring as the value of the load parameter was higher. Additionally, the buckling load levels of the star dome and the three-ring model were about 50-70% and 80-90% of the limit point, respectively.

  • This study treats the criteria, considering the fuzziness occurred by optimization design. And we applied two weighting methods to show the relative importance of criteria. This study develops multi-objective optimization programs implementing plain stress analysis by FEM and discrete optimization design uniformaly. The developed program performs a sample design of 10-member steel truss. This study can carry over the multi-objective optimization based on total system fuzzy-genetic algorithms while performing the stress analysis and optimization design. Especially, when general optimization with unreliable constraints is cannot be solve this study can make optimization design closed to realistic with fuzzy theory.

  • This paper deals with the influence of behavior of a variety of cable elements on the limit strength of steel cable-stayed bridges. The softening plastic-hinge model, which is represented in this study for the limit strength evaluation of the example bridge, considers both geometric and material nonlinearites. Geometric nonlinearity of beam-column members are accounted by using stability function, and material nonlinearity - by using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function. Cable sag effect is considered for cable members. The result of this study shows that the limit strength of the example bridge using the equivalent of elasticity for truss straight elements is smaller than those using the cable or the catenary elements.

  • A tubular member holding an axially through-gusset connection is often used to transmit axial compression in a steel truss structures. The elastic buckling loads of the member is affected by the stiffness ratio($\beta$) and the length ratio(G) because of two elements with different properties. In current code, however, the strength is evaluated with an effective length factor k=0.9 without considering the above effect. Therefore this study analyzed a theoretical mechanism based on the elasticity theory and performed a finite element analysis to investigate the influence parameters on the elastic buckling strength of axially loaded member.

  • JK wall is a shear wall made of lightweight EPS mortar and reinforced with a 3-D galvanized steel mesh, called JK panel, and truss-like stiffeners, called JK stiffeners. Earlier studies have shown that low strength lightweight concrete has the potential to be used in structural elements. In this study, seismic contribution of the JK infill walls surrounded by steel frames is numerically investigated. Adopting a hybrid numerical model, behavior envelop of the wall is derived from the general purpose finite element software, Abaqus. Obtained backbone would be implemented in the professional analytical software, SAP2000, in which through calibrated hysteretic parameters, cyclic behavior of the JK infill can be simulated. Through comparison with earlier experimental results, it turned out that the proposed hybrid modeling can simulate monotonic and cyclic behavior of JK walls with good accuracy. JK infills have a panel-type configuration which their dominant failure mode would be ductile in flexure. Finally technical and economical advantages of the proposed JK infills are assessed for two representative multistory buildings. It is revealed that JK infills can reduce maximum inter-story drifts as well as residual drifts at the expense of minor increase in the developed base shear.

  • The divergence connection between steel circular tubes is widely used in such structures as factory facilities, steel circular hollow section truss, and off-shore tower. Steel circular hollow section (SCHS) have close section, and it makes their per-unit production expense higher than open sectioned products like L-shape, H-shape steels, but the sectional resistance of SCHS against vertical compression and torsion is very high. Despite the structural merits of SCHS, however, many engineers dislike to use them in their design because of uncertainty regarding the stress distribution and deformation behavior at their connections. Therefore, this thesis dealt with X-type connections, the most common forms of connection, and studied their load-deformation relationship. It observed how to show the load-deformation relationship at steel circular tube connections according to the diameter-thickness ratio (D/T) of the chord and diameter of branch-diameter of chord ratio (d/D) and suggested prediction yield load using by ring analysis method.

  • In this paper, effect of steel fiber inclusion, compressive strength of matrix, shear reinforcement and shear span to depth ratio on the flexural behavior of UHPFRC(Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete) were investigated with test of 10-UHPFRC beam specimens. All test specimens were subjected to the flexural static loading. It was shown that steel fiber significantly improve the shear strength of UHPFRC beams. 2% volume fraction of steel fiber change the mode of failure from shear failure to flexural failure and delayed the failure of compressive strut with comparatively short shear span to depth ratio. UHPFRC beams without steel fiber had a 45-degree crack angle and fiber reinforced one had lower crack angle. Shear reinforcement contribution on shear strength of beams can be calculated by 45-degree truss model with acceptable conservatism. Using test results, French and Korean UHPFRC design recommendations were evaluated. French recommendation have shown conservative results on flexural behavior but Korean recommendation have shown overestimation for flexural strength. Both recommendations have shown the conservatism on the flexural ductility and shear strength either.

  • High-strength concrete corbels with varying percentage of steel fibers and two different anchorage types (welding to transverse bar, headed) for the main tension tie were constructed and tested. The results showed that performance in terms of load carrying capacities, stiffness, ductility, and crack width was improved, as the percentage of steel fibers was increased. In addition, the corbel specimens in which headed bars were used as the main tension tie reinforcements showed superior load carrying capacities, stiffness, and ductility compared to the corbel specimens in which the main tension ties were anchored by welding to the transverse bars. From the test results, it is expected that load carrying capacities, durability, and constructibility of high strength concrete corbels would be improved by using steel fibers and headed bars. Experimental results presented in this paper were also compared with various prediction models proposed by researchers and presented in codes. The truss model proposed by Fattuhi provides fairly good predictions for fiber reinforced high-strength concrete corbels.

  • In this study, high strength concrete corbels reinforced with steel fibers and polypropylene fibers, and subjected to the vertical and horizontal loads were constructed and tested. The results showed that performance in terms of load carrying capacities, stiffness, ductility, crack width, and number of cracks was improved, as the steel fibers and polypropylene fibers were added. The polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete corbels resulted in higher ductility in presence of horizontal loads, but showed larger crack width than the steel fiber reinforced concrete corbels. And, the heads of the headed bars provided excellent end anchorage of the main tension tie reinforcement. Experimental results presented in this paper are also compared with various prediction models proposed by codes and researchers. The refined strut-and-tie model showed more accurate and conservative predictions in presence of horizontal loads, and the truss model proposed by Fattuhi provides fairly good predictions for fiber reinforced concrete corbels.
