In this paper, the steady-state performances analysis of a tilting pad gas bearing(TPGB) we analyzed by using finite element method for compressible Reynolds' equation. TPGB is used in a high-expansion-ratio expander running at a speed of 230,000 rpm. In order to solve the nonlinear finite element equations, the Newton-Raphson method is applied. The variations of the loading capacity, friction force and tilting angle of a single pad v.s. eccentricity direction of eccentricity and bearing number are investigated. The condition for the equilibrium of a pad, which is important for safe working of the bearing, is stated. The performances of the three pad bearing such as loading capacity, friction moment are predicted.

This paper proposes a robust control using a sliding mode controller and a fuzzy controller. Having the excellent transient response, the sliding mode controller has the poor steady state response, but the fuzzy controller has a good steady state reponse. A proposed controller combined these controllers has the quick response at the initial condition without the errors. The proposed robust nonlinear controller takes the advantage of the fuzzy controller and is the rapid and the stable response in conditions that the sliding mode controller keeps the errors at the steady state. The performance of proposed method is proved by simulation of the inverted pendulum.

Singh's multi-level method is extended to the optimal tracking control of a large interconnected dynamical system which has coupled states and coupled inputs. The steady-state tracking error and a convergence condition for the extended multi-level method are derived analytically and the results show that the steady-state tracking error and a convergence rate have to be compromised. Also, a new multi-level method which is advantageous over the Singh's method in steady-state tracking error and computational burden is proposed by introducing nominal inputs into the performance index. The resulting feedback gain matrix and the compensation vector are optimal for all initial conditions so that eventual on-line computation is minimal.

To understand the signal fluctuation of a wide-range oxygen sensor installed at the exhaust confluence point, when a misfiring is triggered in a cylinder, the steady state and the transient response characteristics of the sensor to the flow of the misfired gas were investigated quantitatively. It was recognized that the steady state output voltage of the sensor increased higher when it contacted the misfired gas even though the fueling condition was the same as the normal combustion case and this characteristic enabled the application of the wide-range oxygen sensor for the misfire detection. The transient response was compared at different engine speeds and it was found that the response speed increased with the engine speed. The signal fluctuation was also estimated quantitatively, using these steady state and transient response of the sensor, and the estimated signal showed satisfactory correlation with the measurements.
Simulation output is generally stochastic and autocorrelated, and includes the initial condition bias. To exclude the bias, the determination of truncation point has been one of important issues for the steady-state simulation output analysis. In this paper, two methods are presented for detection of truncation point in order to estimate efficiently the steady-state measure of simulation output. They are based on the Euclidean distance equation, and the backpropagation algorithm in Neural Networks. The experimental results obtained by M/M/1 and M/M/2 show that the proposed methods are very promising with respect to coverage and relative bias. The methods could be used for the on-line analysis of simulation outputs.
The present paper studies the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the rectangular supercritical natural circulation loop (SCNCL) using numerical model of one dimensional. Then the results of this model is confirmed with experimental and benchmark results. Variations with several geometric parameters like loop diameter, riser length, and heater length and operating conditions like heater inlet enthalpy, pressure, friction factor, and inlet and exit loss coefficient on steady-state performance are investigated for various orientations like HHHC, HHVC, VHVC and VHHC of the heater and cooler. The chances of existing static instability (Ledinegg excursion) has been investigated, which reveals that it can arise only in a low inlet enthalpy condition, far from the suggested various orientations of heater and cooler.

A mathematical model for the prediction of carbon-dioxide absorption rate during the transient state of rotary type absorber is developed. The rotary type absorber operates using a fast rotating porous structure and clean water. The model for the transient state rotary type absorbers is based on the steady state model of packed tower absorber. The paper manipulates the operating data of an arbitrary quasi-steady state condition of rotary type absorber for the determination of the coefficients involved in the model developed. The prediction accuracy is evaluated from the measured data of rotary type absorber operated under fast transient state. The measured data include the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in mixed gas and the pressure of absorber. The relative error in carbon dioxide prediction is estimated to be 20% at maximum. The model is successfully applied for the prediction of the behavior of a closed cycle diesel engine.
The performance characteristics of the polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) were investigated under various humidification conditions at steady-state and transient conditions. The PEFC studied in this study was characterized by I-V curves in potentiostatic mode. The I-V curves representing steady-state performance were obtained from OCV to 0.25V, and the dynamic performance responses were obtained at some points of voltages. The anodic external humidification was applied and the humidity was controlled from 20% to 100%. The effects of relative humidity of hydrogen were measured with the dry air at the cathode. At high voltage region, the performance at high temperature was higher, but at low voltage region, low temperature condition showed the higher performance. The dynamic responses were observed at the instant when the voltage of the PEFC was changed. It was observed that the performance reached steady-state earlier with the increase of temperature.

The paper presents a numerical solution to the problem of a hot rigid indenter siding over a thermoelastic Winkler foundation with a thermal contact resistance at constant speed. It is shown analytically that no steady-state solution can exist for sufficiently high temperature or sufficiently small normal load or speed regardless of the thermal contact resistance. However, the steady state solution may exist in the same situation if the thermal contact resistance is considered. This means that the effect of the large values of temperature difference and small value of force or velocity which occur at no steady state can be lessened due to the thermal contact resistance. When there is no steady-state the predicted transient behavior involves regions of transient stationary contact interspersed with regions of separation regardless of the thermal contact resistance. Initially, the system typically exhibits a small number of relatively large contact and separation regions, but after the initial transient the trailing edge of the contact area is only established and the leading edge loses contact, reducing the total extent of contact considerably. As time progresses, larger and larger number of small contact areas are established, until eventually the accuracy of the algorithm is limited by the discretization used.
A smart hollow cylinder consisting of a host functionally graded elastic core layer and two surface homogeneous piezoelectric layers is presented in this paper. The bonding between the layers can be perfect or imperfect, depending on the parameters taken in the general linear spring-layer interface model. The effect of such weak interfaces on free vibration and steady-state response is then investigated. Piezoelectric layers at inner and outer surfaces are polarized axially or radially and act as a sensor and an actuator respectively. For a simply supported condition, the state equations with non-constant coefficients are obtained directly from the formulations of elasticity/piezoelasticity. An approximate laminated model is then introduced for the sake of solving the state equations conveniently. It is further assumed that the hollow cylinder is embedded in an elastic medium and is simultaneously filled with compressible fluid. The interaction between the structure and its surrounding media is taken into account. Numerical examples are finally given with discussions on the effect of some related parameters.
