A Study on the Signal Propagation Characteristics of Generator Windings (발전기 권선에서의 신호전송 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The detection and measurement of partial discharge activity prevalent in the solid insulating systems of high-voltage generator stator windings has, for many years, been a recognized method of assessing the insulation condition of such systems. Partial discharge activity occurs at sites of degradation within, or at the surface of, stator's insulation systems under high voltage stressing. However, partial discharge pulses suffer from attenuation and distortion when transmitted along windings, because of the complex L-C network between windings. The mode of transmission varies with the signal frequency and is dependant on the geometrical configurations of windings. This paper reports the investigated results of the signal propagation characteristics along the windings when both sinusoidal signals and simulated partial discharge pulses are injected at the various positions of stator windings within the 25 MVA, 11 kV hydro generator. The on-line identification technique of partial discharge location in generator windings is also proposed in this study.

  • Water absorption in water-cooled generator stator windings can cause serious accidents such as insulation breakdown and it brings a generator to the unexpected sudden outage. Accordingly, it is important to diagnose the water absorption of them in the effective operation of power plant. Especially, the capacitance value which is measured for diagnosis is very small so the special diagnosis methods like stochastic theory are needed. KEPRI developed the water absorption test equipment and diagnosis technology for them. In this paper we propose that water absorption test of generator stator windings using probability distributions. The proposed diagnosis technology is applied to the real system and the results of water absorption test for stator windings are agreed to them of water leak test.

  • In this paper, a novel high-voltage motor monitoring system (HVMMS) is proposed. This system monitors the insulation condition of the stator winding by on-line measurements of partial discharge (PD). Sensor, EMC (Epoxy-Mica Coupler) is used for PD measurement PD signals are continuously measured and digitized with a peak-hold A/D converter to build the database of the high-voltage motor's insulation condition. Also, this system can communicate with the central monitoring system via RS-485. This helps more efficient operation and maintenance of the generator.

  • This paper describes to access the insulation deterioration condition of the stator windings in three large turbine generators. Nondestructive tests have been carried out on stand-still generators which have been in service for 2 to 30 years. In most cases these tests include ac current increase rate($\Delta$I), delta tan delta( ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$), and maximum partial discharge(Qm). Gen. 2 show that the $tan{\delta}$ is higher than other two generators in the $tan{\delta}$-voltage curve. Partial discharge(PD) patterns were observed internal, corona and treeing discharges in large turbine generators. The PD tests were confirmed the correlation between discharge patterns and the kinds of defects.

  • This paper describes the initial characteristics of turbine generators at the Taean thermal power plant #4 and Wolsong nuclear power plant #2. The turbine generators had been in service for two years. The insulation diagnostic tests included measurements of insulation resistance, polarization index, ac current, dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharges (PD). The values of ac current and tan a were measured by Schering bridge. PD measurements were conducted using digital PD detector. The variation of $tan{\delta}$ and PD was confirmed in two generator stator insulations.

  • Recently many research activities on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation of large rotating machines have been reported. Capacitive couplers are widely used as sensors for on-line partial discharge (PD) measurement of high voltage rotating machines. This paper presents laboratory test to compare Stator Slot Coupler (SSC), Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD), 80 [pF] coupler and 500 [pF] coupler for on-line PD measurement of rotating machines.

  • The test were performed to analyze the cause of endwinding breakdown of hydro-generator which had been in service after being constructed 1971. we conducted insulation diagnostic tests and checked visual inspection and operating condition of protective relays. On the basis of these test results, this paper tried to present the importance of service environment for the generator stator winding.

  • The method of maintenance in railway is going to be changed to improve reliability on traction equipment. Partial discharge (PD) tests are useful to evaluate the insulation condition of stator winding. This paper describes the use of PD tests with 5 model coils which have the defects such as internal, slot discharge. The PD tests are performed with epoxy-mica coupler 500 pF at various AC voltages. The result of test shows PD pattern can correlate with the species of defects on 5 model coils.

  • We simulated insulation defects of stator winding wire on high voltage generator by 5 types. 4 types have one discharge source and other one has multi discharge source by simulation. For accurate decision, measurements used to PRPD pattern to occurred partial discharge source of various types. In this research, when PRPD pattern carried out or analyzed pattern recognition of discharge source, it used to powerful tools. In this result, PRPD Pattern defined to have single discharge source of 4 types by insulation defect. When insulation defect simulated, all the defected winding have not the same result. Errors for a little different can make mistakes from a subtle distinction. The difference between internal and void discharge have magnitude of pulse amplitude of inner discharge bigger than void discharge and have a shape of bisymmetry. But void discharge has a shape of bisymmetry against maximum value on polarity respectively. In cases of slot and surface discharge, we confirmed to show similar results those other researchers. In case of multi-discharge, as a result of we could classify not perfect match with occurred patterns in single discharge eachother. In the future, we will have to recognize and classify with results of multi-discharge.

Analysis of Insulation Condition in High Voltage Motor Model Coils (고압전동기 모델 코일의 절연상태 분석)

  • 80pF capacitive couplers were connected to six 6.6kV motor model coil terminals. The voltage applied to the coils were 3.81kv, 4.76 kV and 6.6kV, respectively. These stator coils have various types of artificial insulation defects such as large voids, semi-conductive coating damage and strand insulation fault. Digital PD detector(PDD) and turbine generator analyzer(TGA) were used to measure PD activity. TGA summarizes each plot with two quantities such as the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the peak PD magnitude(Qm). The PD levels in PD were measured with a conventional digital PD detector. Most of the defect mechanism of large motor stator winding can be associated with PD patterns such as internal and slot discharges. PD patterns coincide with PDD and TGA. These instruments have an input bandwidth of 40-400kHz and 0.1-350MHz. Surge testing detects faults in inter-turn winding of high voltage motor model coils.
