  • This paper presents a novel method to diagnose magnetization faults produced during magnetization process using stator coils of a brushless dc motor with concentrated windings. It is demonstrated that the stator coil magnetization faults can cause a drop of energy efficiency of the brushless dc motor through computer simulations using a magnetization fault model and efficiency test using compressors. The proposed method diagnoses the stator coil magnetization faults by using an inverter during the brushless dc motor driving test after the magnetization process is completed. An experimental study on the brushless dc motor for compressor shows that the stator coil magnetization faults can be detected with high sensitivity.

  • To discriminate polarities of stator windings for 3 phase induction motors terminal tags of which are not readable, it is possible to utilize the residual magnetic flux present at their rotors as well as to use the way based on external exciting current. The induced voltages are basically decided by parameters such as the quantity of residual flux, the rotator speed by hand force and the phase properties between stator windings. To adopt induced voltages by residual flux for polarity discrimination at sites, the measured voltages by multi-testers need to be readable in magnitude enough to discriminate winding condition with reasonable phase characteristics. This study focuses on the analysis of various connection cases in the expectation that the summing voltages induced by residual flux shall show zero in case of normal connections while the sum becomes greater indication if the connection is in wrong condition. The proposed method is applied to actual motors to disclose how effective it is for polarity discrimination at sites through comparison of output signals between normal and fault connections.

  • In this study, the way how we can find the defects of motor windings in advance will be discussed. The magnetic flux spectrum in the high frequency region of the large motor was analyzed based on the actual fault practices related with motor windings. In case of defective motor relative amplitude ratio of the stator slot frequency to its sideband was very high compared to that of healthy motor. And the defective signal related with motor windings was indicated in advance in the magnetic flux spectrum prior to over 1 month before failure. Considering this aspect it can be estimated that magnetic flux spectrum in the high frequency region has the excellent predictive diagnostic capability.

  • Partial discharge patterns were analyzed in the pumped storage generator stator winding. These were measured using partial discharge analyzer(PDA) and digital partial discharge detector(PDD). Slot discharge was discovered in phase A. Discharges at conductor surface were occurred in phase B and in Phase C. Partial discharge patterns from on-line PDA system were compared with those off-line PDD system. The results of two systems are very same in phase A, B and C.

  • This paper describes a robust flux bonging scheme which utilizes the windings of the machine itself to implement field orientation control of SLIM (Single-sided Linear Induction Motor). By subtracting the voltage across adjacent motor coils of the same phase which are named STATOR TAPPED COIL, a flux signal is obtained which is insensible to stater resister drop at a low speed that exerts a bad Influence on field orientation. The method using STATOR TAPPED COIL has been implemented at SLIM in our laboratory, and experimental results are being scrutinized.

  • Flux-reversal machine (FRM) is a new doubly-salient stator-permanent magnet (PM) machine with flux linkage reversal in the stator concentrated windings. It can operate in both motoring and generating modes. In this paper, a novel design technique to improve the performance of FRM is proposed. Proposed techniques have a new stator winding and a magnet arrangement method. The stator and rotor shape with a concave type and a flux barrier are also proposed. According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed FRM have an improved performance.

  • On-line partial discharge monitoring system for generator stator insulation is developed. This system consists of remote and host units. The remote unit detects partial discharge signals from SSC(Stator Slot Coupler) installed between wedge and stator windings. The host unit monitors the condition of winding insulation. This system will be used as a module of a generator on-line monitoring system utilizing global network.

  • High voltage motor(rated 6.6kV and 448kw) has failed in the stator endwinding area during normal service. Experiments on microstructure property were conducted using the control and aged insulations, which were drawn out from stator windings of the high voltage motor. The analyses were characterized using stereozoom microscope(SM), scanning electron microscope(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). SM result shows that large voids are present in the interface between turn insulation and groundwall insulation. SEM results indicated that the groundwall insulation is rarely thermal stress. EDS results showed that chemical elements in the high voltage motor stator insulations were Al, Si, O, K and Fe.

  • The central monitoring system with on-line diagnosis of high-voltage generator/motor stator insulation is developed. The system is capable of remote diagnosis and monitoring partial discharges of high-voltage generator/motor stator insulation. GOMS(Generator On-line Monitoring System) with maximum of 9 input channels can measure and analyze the status of high-voltage motor stator insulation by on-line. The measured and analysis data are brought to the central monitoring system via modem to build database. The central monitoring system can diagnose and monitor the insulation status of several high-voltage generator/motor at any time. The insulation status of those machines can be enhanced by the database on partial discharges.

  • Stator turn faults in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are more dangerous than those in induction motors (IMs) because of the presence of spinning rotor magnets that can be turned off at will. Condition monitoring and fault detection and diagnosis of the PMSM have been receiving a growing amount of attention among scientists and engineers in the past few years. The aim of this study is to propose a new detection technique of stator winding faults in a three-phase PMSM. This technique is based on the image analysis and recognition of the stator current Concordia patterns, and will allow the identification of turn faults in the stator winding as well as its correspondent fault index severity. A test bench of a vector controlled PMSM motor behaviors under short circuited turn in two phases stator windings has been built. Some experimental results of the phase to phase short circuits have been performed for diagnosis purpose.
