  • This study suggests some ideas for improvement of mixing classification and illogical subdivisions arrangement of Statistics in Social Science and Mathematical Statistics in Natural Science on KDC. We investigate the characteristics, educational system, and curriculum of Statistics in Korea. Besides, we compare and analyze classification systems such as KDC, DDC, LCC, NDC and Research Fields Code by National Research Foundation of Korea. As a result, Statistics in Social Science is relocated and integrated with the subfield of Natural Science according to the academic background. Existing social statistics topics are subdivided into statistical research methods complementing social science research methods. The heading 'Probabilities, Statistical mathematics' in Natural Science is changed to 'Statistics', and the subdivisions are expanded and revised.

  • There has been growing interest in the quality of official statistics based on the administrative records. Such statistics take a large part in the official statistics in Korea, which are distinguished from survey statistics in aspects of data collection process. So we need specific quality management methods appropriate for official statistics based on the administrative records. This paper concerns improvement of the quality of official statistics. We first briefly review some of main issues facing the official statistics based on the administrative records in Korea and then provide quality assessment indicators for improving the quality of official statistics.

  • Objectives: Because TKM-related statistics are scattered in year books, white papers, or web services, it is not easy to use. This study aimed to build a TKM statistical database offering one-stop service. Methods: We collected TKM statistics from year books, white papers, and web services using TKM related keywords which came from the advanced study. Then we removed, merged, or split the statistics looking through data and meta-data of statistics to build a database. Results: First, we classified the statistics into 6 categories and found that the service category was 303, product category 37 and so on. Second, we analyzed the source of statistics and found that the Ministry of Health & Welfare and the Korea statistics were the strongest sources. Third, we analyzed the years of statistics and found that the oldest was 1962, 35% were within the past 3 years, and only 14% were over 10 years old. Finally, we found that the 415 statistics were composed of 1,120 items and the average was 2.70. Conclusions: Through this study we found that more sophisticated TKM statistics must be produced and developed specially in the education, research, and administration categories. We hope that the effort of TKM societies is available to eliminate the lack of statistical producer's understanding about TKM.

  • This work aims to investigate mathematics teachers' knowledge and belief on the high school probability and statistics. For this aim, two research questions are estabilished as follows. (1) How is mathematics teachers' knowledge on the main contents of the high school probability and statistics in the 7th mathematics curriculum? (2) What is mathematics teachers' belief on the high school probability and statistics? Survey and interviews were carried out to answer the above research questions. Subjects of the survey were 2 7mathematics teachers who were answered to questionnaire. Among them, 3 volunteers were chosen by provinces for in-depth interview. Research findings in mathematics teacher's knowledge are as follows. Firstly, mathematics teachers do not have much of mathematical knowledge on the newly added and changed contents of the high school probability and statistics in the 7th mathematics curriculum. Secondly, mathematics teachers do not change their teaching-learning method for probability and statistics. Thirdly, many teachers think that the use of technology and reconstruction of the textbooks are required in teaching and learning of the high school probability and statistics. But, they stick on their own way. Research findings in mathematics teachers' belief are as follows. Firstly, many mathematics teachers view the nature of statistics as a branch of the applied mathematics and put the value of high school probability and statistics on the practical usefulness, Secondly, many mathematics teachers think that understanding concepts and improving problem solving ability are the best method of the teaching and learning. Thirdly, many mathematics teachers think that high school probability and statistics textbooks should cause motivations and interests in order not to give up studying probability and statistics. It is expected that the above findings can be used to change teachers' teaching and learning methods and to improve teachers training program.

  • This study analyzed an aspect of co-author relationship in papers published in the Korean Journal of Applied Statistics by social network analysis. The data were extracted from 664 papers in the journal from 2000 to 2010. Authors at center of the network are detected by a network centrality analysis. Sub-network analysis found distinguishable research groups from the point of view of their topics or affiliations. The significance of affiliations to co-author relationship was examined by logistic regression analysis.

  • Purpose - This study measures how competitive securities broker-dealers are in the Korean financial markets. It aims to test whether the markets are perfectly competitive or monopolistic since the global financial crisis of 2008. Research design, data, and methodology - We apply the method developed by Panzar and Rosse (1987), H-statistics, which offers an index for the competitiveness as well as statistical tests. The dataset in use is retrieved mainly from the quarterly statements of the financial services companies by the Financial Statistics Information System of the Financial Supervisory Service. General information on officers and employees is utilized in addition to balance sheets and income statements of securities companies. Results - H-statistics for 2009-2015 is about 0.7 that is a robust estimate regardless of model specifications such as full trans-log, partial trans-log, and Cobb-Douglas regression equations. H-statistics for each year is also computed in similar ways in that it varies between 0.3 and 0.9. Conclusions - Since the global financial crisis, H-statistics concludes that securities broker-dealer markets in Korea is neither perfectly competitive nor monopolistic. It evidences that the markets are rather monopolistically competitive. The trend in annual H-statistics leads to the same conclusion but the result is not such stable that overall H-statistics implies.

  • In order for handicapped people to maintain better humane life, it is necessary to get statistics of them in developing appropriate national policy. However, it is very difficult to obtain baseline statistics on regular or occasional basis. It's reason is mainly attributed to attitudes of their family's tendency to conceal any existence of such memeber in the household. As a result, the statis-tics on the handicapped population is very inaccurate and under satisfaction. We must produce such statistics periodically in time and with accuracy. Thus, this study porposes five methods which, we believe, can produce reliable statistics of thehandcapped population : 1) vitalization through enforcement of handicapped information into the registration system, 2) inclusion in population census of items related to handicapped information, 3) improvement of the physically handicapped population survey scheme, 4) utilization of hospital patients' records for development of the statistics, and 5) an estimation through the labor force survey.

  • In this paper we study the behaviors of the generalized Durbin-Watson (DW) statistics when the nonstationary seasonal time series regression model is misspecified. It is observed that when the series is seasonally integrated the generalized DW statistic for the seasonal period order autocorrelation converges in probability to zero while teh generalized DW statistic for the first order autocorrelation has nondegenerate asymptotic distribution. When the series is regularly and seasonally integrated the generalized DW for the first order autocorrelation still converges in probability to zero.
