  • The problem of 'outliers', observations which look suspicious in some way, has long been one of the most concern in the statistical structure to experimenters and data analysts. We propose a model for outliers problem and also analyze it in linear regression model using a Bayesian approach with the variance-inflation model. We will use Geweke's(1996) ideas which is based on the data augmentation method for detecting outliers in linear regression model. The advantage of the proposed method is to find a subset of data which is most suspicious in the given model by the posterior probability The sampling based approach can be used to allow the complicated Bayesian computation. Finally, our proposed methodology is applied to a simulated and a real data.

  • The purpose of the study is to suggest a methodology for properly categorizing the body type of Koreans based on the multivariate statistical analysis. Anthropometric data used in the study were measured from the sampled strata of about fifteen thousand Koreans surveyed through the 5th national anthropometic data measurement project called Size Korea funded by ATS, Korea, during 2003-2004. In order to categorize whole body types, the normalized anthropometric variables, being divided by its stature, were used for obtaining a set of factors that supposedly represent body types through the factor analysis. These factors, which were again clustered, yielded the body types according to the gender. The body types classified are expected to be applied to product design for clothing, furniture, automobile packaging, etc.

  • Currently, Gyeongnam province is executing the social index survey every year to the provincials. But, this survey has the limit of the analysis as execution of the different survey per 3 year cycles. The solution of this problem is data fusion. Data fusion is the process of combining multiple data in order to provide information of tactical value to the user. But, data fusion doesn#t mean the ultimate result. Therefore, efficient analysis for the data fusion is also important. In this study, we present data fusion method of statistical survey data. Also, we suggest application methodology of association rule mining by clustering through data fusion of statistical survey data.

  • The ride comfort is more important according to train speedup. Generally it is defined as the vehicle vibration. There are many studies on evaluation method of ride comfort for railway. But the ride comfort for Korean high speed train(HSR 350x) has been assessed by statistical method according to UIC 513R. In this paper, the ride indices, which are measured in the Korean high speed train, have been analyzed and reviewed by appling the statistical methodology such as t-test, variance analysis(ANOVA) and regression analysis.

  • The present paper utilizes auxiliary information to neutralize the effect of non-response for estimating the population mean. Improved ratio type estimators for population mean have been proposed and their properties are studied. These estimators are suggested for both single phase sampling and two phase sampling in presence of non-response. Empirical studies are conducted to validate the theoretical results and demonstrate the performance of the proposed estimators. The proposed estimators are shown to perform better than those used by Cochran (Sampling Techniques (3rd ed), John Wiley & Sons, 1977), Khare and Srivastava (In Proceedings-National Academy Science, India, Section A, 65, 195-203, 1995), Rao (Randomization Approach in Incomplete Data in Sample Surveys, Academic Press, 1983; Survey Methodology 12, 217-230, 1986), and Singh and Kumar (Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics, 50, 395-408, 2008; Statistical Papers, 51, 559-582, 2010) under the derived optimality condition. Suitable recommendations are put forward for survey practitioners.

  • Reliability is one of the computable quality features of the software. To assess the reliability the software reliability growth models(SRGMS) are used at different test times based on statistical learning models. In all situations, Tradational time-based SRGMS may not be enough, and such models cannot recognize errors in small and medium sized applications.Numerous traditional reliability measures are used to test software errors during application development and testing. In the software testing and maintenance phase, however, new errors are taken into consideration in real time in order to decide the reliability estimate. In this article, we suggest using the Weibull model as a computational approach to eradicate the problem of software reliability modeling. In the suggested model, a new distribution model is suggested to improve the reliability estimation method. We compute the model developed and stabilize its efficiency with other popular software reliability growth models from the research publication. Our assessment results show that the proposed Model is worthier to S-shaped Yamada, Generalized Poisson, NHPP.

  • The cash flow forecasting is normally done by contractors in construction industry at early stages of the project for contractual decisions. The decision making in such situations involve uncertainty about future cash flows and assessment of working capital requirements gains more importance in projects constrained by cash. The traditional approach to assess the working capital requirements is deterministic in and neglects the uncertainty. This paper presents an alternate approach to assessment of working capital requirements for contractor based on fuzzy set theory by considering the uncertainty and ambiguity involved at payment periods. Statistical methods are used to deal with the uncertainty for working capital curves. Membership functions of the fuzzy sets are developed based on these statistical measures. Advantage of fuzzy peak working capital requirements is demonstrated using peak working capital requirements curves. Fuzzy peak working capital requirements curves are compared with deterministic curves and the results are analyzed. Fuzzy weighted average methodology is proposed for the assessment of peak working capital requirements.

  • Purpose - The study aims to show the successful application of Six Sigma in software companies for process improvement. Research design, data and methodology - A mixed methodology has been used which include both qualitative and quantitative research. In the qualitative research methodology part, a detailed and comprehensive literature study have been carried out. The literature study consists of articles, books, web materials, discussion forms and others. In the quantitative research methodology part, interviews have been conducted. Results - Six sigma is the practical application of a theoretical statistical measurement that equates to 3.4 defects per million opportunities -a position of practically zero defects for any process or service. Initially originating in Motorola Inc. in 1985 as a response to drastic quality improvement pressures from the threat of Japanese competition, it quickly gained many followers particularly G.E., Allied Signal, Ford Motor Company etc. and more recently attentions have shifted to service environments. There are still some problems and misconceptions existed about the applicability of Six Sigma in software companies. Conclusions - The paper concludes that Six Sigma can bring large benefits for software companies too. Furthermore, software companies have already started to implement Six Sigma approach, like Ericsson, Tata Consultancy Service, etc.

  • Due to the environmental problem, automotive companies are trying to reduce the weight of car body. Therefore, WP(Transformation Induced Plasticity) steels, which are hish strength and ductility have been developed. The application of TRIP steel to the members has been reported to increase the energy absorption capability. Welding process is a complex process; therefore deciding the optimal welding conditions is an effective method on the basis of the experimental data. However, using a trial-and-error method from the beginning in such a wide area, in order to decide the optimal conditions requires too many numbers of experiments. To overcome these problems and to decide the optimal conditions, response surface methodology was used. Response surface methodology is a collection of mathematical and statistical techniques that are for the modeling and analysis of problems in which a response of interest is influenced by several variables and the objective is to optimize this response. The introduced method was applied to the resistance spot welding process of the TRIP steel and the welding parameters were optimized. (Received December 6, 2002)
