  • This paper describes the procedures to estimate for the design thermal loads on prestressed concrete box girder bridges on th basis of the extreme analysis of the temperature data obtained from long-term thermal analyses. Long-term thermal analyses using the environmental data for three years were conducted, and the extreme distributions of th thermal loads are then determined by the tail-equivalence method, and the thermal loads corresponding to selected return period are calculated. Finally, the results are compared to the specifications suggested in a current design code for thermal loads.

  • Estimation of leaf wetness duration (LWD) facilitates assessment of the likelihood of outbreaks of many crop diseases. Models that estimate LWD may be more convenient and grower-friendly than measuring it with wetness sensors. Empirical models utilizing statistical procedures such as CART (Classification and Regression Tree; Gleason et al., 1994) have estimated LWD with accuracy comparable to that of electronic sensors.(omitted)

  • Box-Cox power transformation is employed for analyzing volatilities in Korean financial time series such as KOSPI, KOSDAQ index and interest rates. Statistical procedures for Box-Cox transformed ARCH models are presented. For illustration, diverse financial time series data are analyzed and appropriate power transformations are suggested for each data.

  • In clinical dental research, errors occur in spite of careful study design and conduct. Data cleaning procedures intend to identify and correct these errors or at least to minimize their influence on study. Outlier is the one of these errors. Outlier detection is the first step in data analysis process which has a serious effect in the field of dental research. Hence, this paper aims to introduce the methods to detect the outliers and to examine their influences in statistical data analysis.

  • Several statistical procedures for assessment of bioequivalence of variabilities between two drug formulations in bioequivalence trials are reviewed and modified methods for assessing total variability are suggested. The problem of the current US FDA aggregate criterion for population bioequivalence and the necessity of disaggregate criterion are discussed with an illustrated example.

  • The acoustic phenomena in the actual sound systems involve a variety of compound problems. In this paper, the well-known Bayes' theorem is first employed and expanded into orthonormal and non-orthonomal series forms matched to the digital processing of lower and higher order statistical informations and the noisy observations. Proposed on-line algorithms of digital filter type are applied to the actual state estimation for a reverberation characteristics in a room under contamination of background noises.

  • Quality of Service(QoS) in the telecommunications can be evaluated by analyzing the opinion data which result from the surveyed opinions of respondents and quantify subjective satisfaction on the QoS from the customers' viewpoints. For analyzing the opinion data, MOS(mean opinion score) method and Cumulative Probability Curve method are often used. The methods are based on the scoring method, and therefore, have the intrinsic deficiency due to the assignment of arbitrary scores. In this paper, we propose an analysis method of the opinion data using logit models which can be used to analyze the ordinal categorical data without assigning arbitrary scores to customers' opinion, and develop an analysis procedure considering the usage of procedures provided by SAS(Statistical Analysis System) statistical package. By the proposed method, we can estimate the relationship between customer satisfaction and network performance parameters, and provide guidelines for network planning. In addition, the proposed method is compared with Cumulative Probability Curve method with respect to prediction errors.

  • This paper studies two sequential procedures to estimate a monotone convex function using $L_2$ monotonization and uniform convexification; one, denoted by FMSC, monotonizes the data first and then, convexifis the monotone estimate; the other, denoted by FCSM, first convexifies the data and then monotonizes the convex estimate. We show that two shape modifiers are not commutable and so does FMSC and FCSM. We compare them numerically in uniform error(UE) and integrated mean squared error(IMSE). The results show that FMSC has smaller uniform error(UE) and integrated mean squared error(IMSE) than those of FCSC.

  • Self-organizing map (SOM) has been developed mainly by T. Kohonen and his colleagues as a unsupervised learning neural network. Because of its topological ordering property, SOM is known to be very useful in pattern recognition and text information retrieval areas. Recently, data miners use Kohonen´s mapping method frequently in exploratory analyses of large data sets. One problem facing SOM builder is that there exists no sensible criterion for evaluating goodness-of-fit of the map at hand. In this short communication, we propose valid evaluation procedures for the Kohonen SOM of any size. The methods can be used in selecting the best map among several candidates.
