  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of tourism councils on the activation of rural tourism by comparing the rural tourism sites with the tourism councils and the rural tourism sites without tourism councils. The comparative indicators were divided into statistical quantitative indicators such as number of tourists, sales volume, and income level, and qualitative indicators of satisfaction, return visit, and word of mouth intentions. As a result of the study, it was found that all the items of the quantitative and qualitative indicators were active in the rural tourism area where the tourism council was composed. This can be attributed to the fact that the members of the tourism council consist of administrative agencies, experts, tourism operators, experts, etc., and constantly develop strategic programs such as diverse opinions and unique constellations. Therefore, in order to revitalize rural tourism in the future, it can be said that the tourism council should be constructed, and institutional devices should be prepared so that experts and residents in each field can participate equally.

  • Provisioning service, which is one of the ecosystem service functions, means goods and services such as food and fuel that people get from ecosystem. Provisioning functions are closely related to the primary industry, a sector of economy. Excessive demand and use of human society can cause trade-offs among regulation, cultural, and supporting services. Therefore, it is important to perform evaluation ecosystem services periodically and to monitor the time series fluctuations to identify the impact of provisioning services on other ecosystem services (trade-off) and to maintain sustainable provisioning service. When it comes to the precise assessment of provisioning service, it is necessary to get the statistical data and standardize indicators and methods. In this study, indicators and methods, which are applicable to the spatial level of national-local-protected areas, were derived through literature analysis and expert survey. The result of this study implies that provisioning services measurement by spatial level improve the efficiency of the establishment of environmental conservation plans by whose purpose.

  • Korea's rural areas, rich in natural resources and scenic landscapes, are facing a crisis of rural depopulation due to population decline, aging, and uncontrolled development. This study aims to develop a vulnerability diagnostic indicators for rural areas by integrating the concepts of quality of life and livability. A diagnostic process was developed and applied to Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, to demonstrate its applicability and effectiveness. The diagnostic process incorporates two approaches: a functional vulnerability analysis and a field survey-based assessment. Functional diagnostic indicators reflecting rural characteristics were developed and applied to analyze four categories (living, production, rest, and community areas) using statistical data (2020-2023) from sources such as KOSIS and the Rural Space Information System. Indicators were normalized using the Min-Max Rescaling method, enabling cross-regional comparisons. Field surveys assessed residential comfort and identified disruptive factors, such as abandoned houses and insufficient green spaces, through direct observations and resident interviews. The vulnerability of Jinan-gun was analyzed across the four functional categories. Among the eight vulnerability levels (I to VIII), the living area was rated as VII, the production area as IV, the rest area as VI, and the community area as V. Jeongcheon-myeon was the most vulnerable in the living area due to aged and vacant houses, lack of elderly welfare facilities, and poor public transportation. These findings provide a basis for designing tailored management projects and suggest the need for policy support addressing the unique characteristics of each region.

  • Unprecedented weather phenomena are occurring because of climate change: extreme heavy rains, heat waves, and severe rain storms after the rainy season. Recently, the frequency of these abnormal phenomena has increased. However, regular pattern or cycles cannot be found. Analysis of annual data or annual average data, which has been established a research method of climate change, should be applied to find frequency and tendencies of extreme climate events. In this paper, extreme indicators of precipitation and temperature marked by objectivity and consistency were established to analyze data collected by 66 observatories throughout Korea operated by the Meteorological Administration. To assess the statistical significance of the data, linear regression and Kendall-Tau method were applied for statistical diagnosis. The indicators were analyzed to find tendencies. The analysis revealed that an increase of precipitation along with a decrease of the number of rainy days. A seasonal trend was also found: precipitation rate and the heavy rainfall threshold increased to a greater extent in the summer(June-August) than in the winter (September-November). In the meanwhile, a tendency of temperature increase was more prominent in the winter (December-February) than in the summer (June-August). In general, this phenomenon was more widespread in inland areas than in coastal areas. Furthermore, the number of winter frost days diminished throughout Korea. As was mentioned in the literature, the progression of climate change has influenced the increase of temperature in the winter.

  • In general, stock prices do not follow normal distributions and mean trend indexes, volatility indexes, and volume indicators relating to these non-normal stock price are widely used as buy-sell strategies. These general buy-sell strategies are rather intuitive than statistical reasoning. The non-normality problem can be solved by normalizing process and statistical buy-sell strategy can be obtained by using mean trend and volatility indexes together with normalized stock prices. In this paper, buy-sell strategy based on mean trend and volatility index with normalized stock prices are proposed and applied to KOSPI200 data to see the feasibility of the proposed buy-sell strategy.

  • This study aims to increase understanding of current status and changes of academic libraries in South Korea in comparison with those of academic libraries in North America and United Kingdom (UK). The five-year statistics of academic libraries were collected from Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL), and the authors compared the statistical indicators that are comparable to each other. The circumstance and performance of academic libraries in North America were much better than those of South Korea. In addition, the area of library buildings in South Korea was larger than those in UK, and they also had more books and carrels than UK libraries; however, UK libraries had more library staffs, expenditure on material purchase, and interlibrary loan requests. These findings imply that there should be more support on academic libraries in South Korea to increase library staffs and budget, which will invigorate library services and use.

  • Despite the fact that there are about 435,000 unemployed youth out there in 2003, small and medium manufacturing companies experience a shortage of labor in South Korea. Korean government has released the statistical data on labor shortage as well as unemployment. However, there is an inconsistency in the labor shortage statistics of the small and medium business sector released by two different government bodies: the Labor Demand Survey by the Ministry of Labor (MOL), and the Manpower Survey for the Small and Medium Business by the Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA). This paper analyzes causes of the differences the conceptualization and measurement of labor shortage and the data collecting methods. This paper also suggests alternative statistical indicators to overcome the confusion.
