In maize, knowledge of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among elite inbred lines is an significant impact on the selection of parental lines for hybrid varieties. Genetic diversity and genetic relationships among 11 parental inbred lines of Korean waxy and normal corn varieties were analyzed using 50 SSR markers distributed over the whole genome. A total of 171 allele bands were detected with an average of 3.4 alleles per locus. Number of allele bands per locus ranged from two to six and gene diversity varied from 0.165 to 0.900 with an average of 0.596 depending on the SSR loci. The cluster tree recognized three major groups with 61.6% genetic similarity. Group I includes 7 inbred lines (KL103, HW1, HW4, HW6, HW7, HW8, HW9), with similarity coefficients of between 0.616 and 0.730. Group II includes 2 inbred lines (HF1, HF2), with similarity coefficients of 0.959. Group III includes 2 inbred lines (HW3, HW5), with similarity coefficients of 0.713. The present study indicates that the SSR markers chosen for this analysis are effective for the assessment of genetic diversity and genetic relationships among 11 parental inbred lines.
In this study, the major agronomic traits were investigated and RAPD technique was applied for the analysis of the genetic relations between the native ginsengs collected from Poonggi and Geumsan provinces in Korea. The main morphological traits were measured for a total of 54 collections of native ginseng from two areas based on UPOV standard. A total of 58 collections consisting of twenty-one native ginsengs collections from Poonggi area, twenty-nine collections from Geumsan area and four varieties of P. quinquefolium, P. japonicum, Chunpoong and Hwangsuk as controls were analyzed and clustered by RAPD. The results indicated that 01-9, 01-35 and 01-44 collections from Poonggi area were grouped into Geumsan area, while 332001, 332002 and 332003 collections from Geumsan area were grouped into Poonggi area. On comparison to the similarity of Poonggi collections (73-95%), the Geumsan collections showed 65-86% similarity in the population. Thus, the cluster should be applied according to the number of stem, number of leaves per stem and leaflet shape on the regionally native ginseng collections. The fourteen primers such as OPA02, OPA07, OPC08, OPD11, OPD20 and so on, will be used to select the native ginseng in the future studies.

RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) is the empirical formular widely used to estimate rates of soil erosion caused by rainfall and associated overland flow. Among the factors considered in RUSLE, rainfall erosivity factor (R factor) is the major one derived by rainfall intensity and characteristics of rainfall event. There has been developed various methods to estimate R factor, such as energy based methods considering physical schemes of soil erosion and simple methods using the empirical relationship between soil erosion and annual total rainfall. This study is aimed to quantitatively evaluate the variation among the R factors estimated using different methods for South Korea. Station based observation (minutely rainfall data) were collected for 72 stations to investigate the characteristics of rainfall events over the country and similarity and differentness of R factors calculated by each method were compared in various ways. As results use of simple methods generally provided greater R factors comparing to those for energy based methods by 76 % on average and also overestimated the range of factors using different equations. The variation coefficient of annual R factors was calculated as 0.27 on average and the results significantly varied by the stations. Additionally the study demonstrated the rank of methods that would provide exclusive results comparing to others for each station. As it is difficult to find universal way to estimate R factors for specific regions, the efforts to validate and integrate various methods are required to improve the applicability and accuracy of soil erosion estimation.

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng) is an important medicinal tree found in Russian taiga, and northern regions of Korea, Japan, and China. In this study, we analyzed the genome-wide distribution of microsatellites in E. senticosus using developed SSR markers. A total of 711 clones from an SSR-enriched genomic DNA library were sequenced, of which 47 clones (6.6%) were redundant. Of the 664 independent clones, only 12 polymorphic SSR markers were obtained, which also revealed successful amplicons in E. senticosus accessions. Using the developed SSR markers, we estimated genetic diversity and population structure among 131 E. senticosus accessions in Korea and China. The number of alleles ranged from 2 to 11, with an average of 7.4 alleles. The mean values of observed heterozygosity ($H_O$) and expected heterozygosity ($H_E$) were 0.59 and 0.56, respectively. The average polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.51 in all 131 E. senticosus accessions. E. senticosus accessions in Korea and China showed a close genetic similarity. Significantly low pairwise genetic divergence was observed between the two regions, suggesting a relatively narrow level of genetic basis among E. senticosus accessions. Our results not only provide molecular tools for genetic studies in E. senticosus but are also helpful for conservation and E. senticosus breeding programs.
Hexokinase is the first enzyme in the hexose assimilation pathway; it acts as a sensor for plant sugar responses, and it is also important in determining the fruit sugar levels. The full-length cDNA of a hexokinase gene was isolated from loquat through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends, which was designated as EjHXK1. EjHXK1 is 1,839 bp long and contains an entire open reading frame encoding 497 amino acids. The predicted protein of EjHXK1 shares 72%-81% similarity with other plant hexokinases. Phylogeny analysis indicated that EjHXK1 is closely related to maize and rice hexokinases. Transient expression of the 35S: EjHXK1-GFP fusion protein was observed on the cell membrane and cytoplasm. Real-time RT-PCR indicated that EjHXK1 is expressed in loquat leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits. EjHXK1 transcripts were higher during early fruit development, but decreases before maturation, which is consistent with hexokinase enzyme activity during fruit development and conducive for hexose accumulation in mature fruits. These results imply that EjHXK1 may play important roles in the regulation of sugar flux during fruit ripening.
Distribution patterns of sandy bottom macrobenthic communities were studied around the Hupo coastal area. The seasonal surveys were conducted at 15 chosen sites within a depth range of 10 to 50 m along 10 km of the coastline using a Smith-McIntyre grab $(0.05\;m^2)$ in 2005. Overall depth distribution following the direction of the offshore become deeper parallel to the coastline. A total of 319 macrobenthic species were sampled with a mean density of $1,972\;ind./m^2$, and mean biomass was 82.5 wet-weight $g/m^2$. The major individual-dominant species were three polychaetes Spiophanes bombyx ($436\;ind./m^2$), Scoletoma longifolia ($250\;ind./m^2$) and Magelona japonica ($170\;ind./m^2$), and bivalve Adontorhina subquadrata ($73\;ind./m^2$). Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis based on Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 major station groups which corresponded to macrobenthic faunal assemblages and their characteristic species. In addition, environmental conditions were significantly different between station groups. Group I contained mostly 20 and 50 m deep sites and was associated with sandy mud. Group I was characterized by high abundance of S. bombyx, S. longifolia, A. subquadrata. It was divided into two sub-groups (I-I and I-II) in relation to depth. Sub-group I-I was associated with deeper sites than sub-group I-II. Group II included mostly inshore area shallower than 15 m and was associated with coarse and medium sand. Group II was characterized by Lumbrinerides hayashii and Urothoe grimaldii japonica.
Marssonina coronaria associated with apple blotch disease causes severe premature defoliation, and is widely distributed in Korea. Thirteen isolates were collected from orchards located in Gyeongbuk Province from 2005~2007. All isolates displayed over 99.6% and 99.2% sequence similarity to each other in internal transcribed spacer regions and partial sequences of 28S rDNA, respectively. The isolates were phylogenetically closely related to Chinese isolates. Selected isolates did not differ in their pathogenicity. The optimum conditions for fungal growth were $20^{\circ}C$ and pH 6 on peptone potato dextrose agar (PPDA). Peptone and mannose were the best nitrogen and carbon source, respectively. Fungal growth was better on PPDA than on common potato dextrose agar. This study provides valuable information for integrated disease management program and facilitates the routine culturing of M. coronaria.

In weighted k-nearest neighbor (WkNN)-based Fingerprinting positioning step, a process of comparing the requested positioning signal with signal information for each reference point stored in the fingerprint DB is performed. At this time, the higher the number of matched base station identifiers, the higher the possibility that the terminal exists in the corresponding location, and in fact, an additional weight is added to the location in proportion to the number of matching base stations. On the other hand, if the matching number of base stations is small, the selected candidate reference point has high dependence on the similarity value of the signal. But one problem arises here. The positioning signal can be compared with the repeater signal in the signal information stored on the DB, and the corresponding reference point can be selected as a candidate location. The selected reference point is likely to be an outlier, and if a certain weight is applied to the corresponding location, the error of the estimated location information increases. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a WkNN technique including an outlier removal function. To this end, it is first determined whether the repeater signal is included in the DB information of the matched base station. If the reference point for the repeater signal is selected as the candidate position, the reference position corresponding to the outlier is removed based on the clustering technique. The performance of the proposed technique is verified through data acquired in Seocho 1 and 2 dongs in Seoul.

Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) is a satellite-based augmentation system (SBAS) that provides approach procedure with vertical guidance-I (APV-I) level corrections and integrity information to Korea territory. KASS is used to monitor navigation performance in real-time, and this paper introduces the design, implementation, and verification process of mission monitoring (MIMO) in KASS. MIMO was developed in compliance with the Minimum Operational Performance Standards of the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics for Global Positioning System (GPS)/SBAS airborne equipment. In this study, the MIMO system was verified by comparing and analyzing the outputs of reference tools. Additionally, the definition and derivation method of accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability subject to MIMO were examined. The internal and external interfaces and functions were then designed and implemented. The GPS data pre-processing was minimized during the implementation to evaluate the navigation performance experienced by general users. Subsequently, tests and verification methods were used to compare the obtained results based on reference tools. The test was performed using the KASS dataset, which included GPS and SBAS observations. The decoding performance of the developed MIMO was identical to that of the reference tools. Additionally, the navigation performance was verified by confirming the similarity in trends. As MIMO is a component of KASS used for real-time monitoring of the navigation performance of SBAS, the KASS operator can identify whether an abnormality exists in the navigation performance in real-time. Moreover, the preliminary identification of the abnormal point during the post-processing of data can improve operational efficiency.
