Structural integrity evaluation is important item in the aircraft certification. Recently, it is designed for limit load, material weakness about fatigue and corrosion, damage by bird strike in flight to evaluate structural integrity of aircraft. And static/fatigue analysis are performed to secure structural integrity, it was verified by static and fatigue tests. To evaluate the structural integrity of small aircraft tail, structural integrity was calculated by the finite element analysis. In the present study, finite element analysis are performed to pick out load cases in flight occurrence, and secure margin of safety to evaluate structural integrity of KC-100 tail unit. The proprieties of finite element analysis results are compared with the static structure test results. The estimation process of structural integrity for small aircraft tail may help the design.

This paper presents the characteristics of wing-tail interference for a tail-controlled missile. The magnitude of wing-tail interference was calculated with wind tunnel test results and its effects on aerodynamic coefficients were investigated. The downwash angle of tail wing was calculated with experimental data and the effect of wing-tail interference was expressed as a ratio of angle of attack. Numerical simulations were made to examine flow characteristics of wing-tail interference and the vorticity contour of missile were compared with respect to angle of attack. Experimental and numerical analysis results show that the wing-tail interference has significant effects on static stability of tail-controlled missile.

Biomimetics involves the design of robotic platforms inspired from living creatures to achieve efficient operation under environmental conditions. A development within biomimetics involves investigating the function of a tail and applying it to robot design. This study aims to define the function of a static tail for water-running robots, and optimize its geometric and compliance parameters. The rolling angle of the tail is determined by the objective function, while the area and fillet ratio are used for geometric design and compliance parameters in the rolling and yawing directions. Repeated motion of the water-running robot's footpads at frequencies of 9 and 10 Hz is used as the operating condition. Robust design based on the Taguchi methodology is performed via orthogonal arrays. The optimized tail design derived in this study will be implemented in a robotic platform to improve steering and balancing functions in the pitching direction.

The tail flip of the decapod shrimp is a main feature in escaping behavior from the mesh of the codend in the trawl. The characteristics of tail flip in target prawn was observed and analyzed in a water tunnel in respect of flow condition and mesh penetration by a high speed video camera (500 fps). The tail bending angle or bending time in static water was significantly different than in flow water (0.7 m/s) and resultantly the angular velocity in static water was significantly higher than in flow water when carapace was fixed condition. When escaping through vertical traverse net panel in water flow the relative moving angle and relative passing angle to flow direction during tail flip, it significantly decreases the number of shrimps escaping than the case of blocking shrimp. The bending angles of tail flip between net blocking and passing through mesh were not significantly different while the bending time of shrimp passing through mesh was significantly longer than when shrimp blocking on the net. Accordingly the angular velocity of passing through mesh was significantly slower than blocking on the net although the angular velocity of the tail flip was not significantly related with carapace length. The main feature of tail flip for mesh penetration was considered as smaller diagonal direction as moving and passing angle in relation to net panel as right angle to flow direction rather than the angular velocity of tail flip.
In this paper, we present a one-pass semi-dynamic network decoding framework that inherits both advantages of fast decoding speed from static network decoders and memory efficiency from dynamic network decoders. Our method is based on the novel language model network representation that is essentially of finite state machine (FSM). The static network derived from the language model network [1][2] is partitioned into smaller subnetworks which are static by nature or self-structured. The whole network is dynamically managed so that those subnetworks required for decoding are cached in memory. The network is near-minimized by applying the tail-sharing algorithm. Our decoder is evaluated on the 25k-word Korean broadcast news transcription task. In case of the search network itself, the network is reduced by 73.4% from the tail-sharing algorithm. Compared with the equivalent static network decoder, the semi-dynamic network decoder has increased at most 6% in decoding time while it can be flexibly adapted to the various memory configurations, giving the minimal usage of 37.6% of the complete network size.

During the conceptual design phase of a light sport aircraft, the wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the static stability of newly-designed configuration. The 1/5 scale-down wind tunnel model consisted of fuselage, main wing, vertical tail and horizontal tail. The main wing and tails were able to be attached or detached from the fuselage. The aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the 6 different configurations compounding each component were measured by using the internal balance system and their static stability derivatives were derived. With these experimental data, the baseline lift and drag characteristics as well as the effects of each component to the longitudinal, directional and lateral static stability were quantitatively analyzed.
Spot welding has been used in the sheet metal joining processes because of its high productivity and convenience. In this study, predicting methods of fatigue life of spot welded joint have been investigated and fatigue and static tests were conducted with the peel-tension specimens using cold rolled steel plate(SPCC). Fatigue life of peel-tension spot welded joint was influenced by tail effect. Fatigue life evaluation using modified stress index parameter, considering the effective eccentric length, can predict the life more exactly than conventional stress index parameter.

Wind tunnel testing to construct static aerodynamic database of KF-16 was conducted for preceding research of design of experiments in wind tunnel testing. The test model is KF-16 scaled 1/33 and it has horizontal tail, flaperon, and rudder. The experiments consist of one experiment for analyzing aerodynamic coefficients under whether or not horizontal tail is present and four experiments for analyzing aerodynamic coefficients of changes of deflection angle in control surface which are flap, flaperon, rudder, and horizontal tail. After conducting wind tunnel testing, the experimental results show that the control surface changes have a great effect on Aerodynamic characteristics.
Tail-wing, gondola and thrust motor mount(EMS) were built by carbon/glass fiber composites. Structural strength & stiffness was verified by specimen tests. Static strength tests for each structural components were conducted separately. Boundary conditions are specially designed for each components to simulate exact joint conditions. Tests shows no detriment deformation at 100% DLL and no failure at 150% DLL.
In load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method, resistance factors are typically calibrated using resistance bias factors obtained from either only the data within ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ or the data except the tail values of an assumed probability distribution to increase the reliability of the database. However, the data selection approach has a shortcoming that any low-quality data inadvertently included in the database may not be removed. In this study, a data quality evaluation method, developed based on the quality of static load test results, the engineering characteristics of in-situ soil, and the dimension of aggregate piers, is proposed for use in constructing database. For the evaluation of the method, a total 65 static load test results collected from various literatures, including static load test reports, were analyzed. Depending on the quality of the database, the comparison between bias factors, coefficients of variation, and resistance factors showed that uncertainty in estimating bias factors can be reduced by using the proposed data quality evaluation method when constructing database.
